This is the twisted story of Dr. Jan Karbaat, a Dutch fertility doctor who, across almost 30 years, secretly used his own sperm to impregnate women who came to his clinic for IVF treatment.
His disturbing actions resulted in at least 78 children, who were forced to come to terms with their father’s true identity, the realisation that their birth was founded in deceit, and the fact that they have dozens of half-siblings… and counting.

I grew up in Provo Utah and there was a fertility doctor that did the same thing. Dr Jacobson. I was good friends with his son and it was a nightmare for the family. This is so sad that people would do this to others. I haven't watched the entire episode yet, but I wanted to share that this something that's probably happening a lot. 👍

@@chorizo8939 LMAO at the lack of self awareness in your comment. You realize that the people who use sperm banks are also slaves to their primitive desires right? They could have just adopted, but just like the doctor, they too are going out of their way to achieve a 'legacy'. And not only that, but sperm banks also have requirements for the type of men who are allowed to donate (Often times 6 foot, white, college educated), so theres an immoral eugenic aspect to it too. This seems to have happened all over the world, I met a man who discovered he had over 70 siblings thanks to a doctor in Australia with a similar god complex, he was a lost soul and very angry with his ‘father’, while of course it can end up that way anyway to knowingly impregnate women without being upfront is unforgivable.

Women do it to men all the time and thats considered cute. Got to love the double standard. In this world everything a man does will be considered evil. If a women is deceitful tho in order to get pregnant than thats cool. I saw a tik tok video of a mother literally admitting to lying to her bf about being on the pill so she could get pregnant. Then she shows off her kids and the comments are full of "how cute"! Why is that, that we have different standards for men and women? Hell to this day men aren't allowed to control there future, only women. Exactpy why forced parenthood is only ok for men. If women were held to the same standard as men when it comes to reproduction they would have a freaking melt down thats for sure. If thats one thing I cant stand about feminists is just that. They seem to fall very silent about issues that impact men negatively. They only care about one gender, and one gender only. I hope some day feminist can start supporting to end all double standards, but I don't see that happening any time soon. There more worried in getting ahead and leaving us behind them.

That’s scary that nowadays, if you don’t know who your father is, you risk the danger of dating someone who could potentially be your sibling. It’s an awkward situation to ask a potential mate before getting serious to get a dna test because it is their right to agree or disagree. We all know the dangers of inbreeding so it puts all these people born to unknown donors on how to handle this and dating knowing you don’t know how many siblings you have that lives in the same city/town as you. It raises a lot of ethical questions and like the journalist said, our laws are not up to date to the current needs of society specially in this subject.

Are you blind and deaf? They did not in any way frame this as a "good or okay thing". There was literally suspense/thriller stock background music throughout the video and the Journalist's perspective was consistently accusatory until the very last clip of him where he simply tries to explain to people like you that the situation is not entirely simple and black/white. No one is defending what he did as being okay, not even the children that were interviewed, but considering the only thing the mothers were choosing when getting anonymous donor sperm was a series of traits, a long-lived, reasonably handsome in his youth, very intelligent doctor is hardly a bad set of traits. Just as an example of the kinds of gene they could've received, I have serious depression, addiction issues, and (on one side of the family) a strong likelihood of having knee/hip issues in my later years (I have plenty of good genes too, but the doctor doesn't seem to have any serious *genetic* issues). The children obviously recognize the problem of having so many half siblings, but its an interesting story, so I'd think it wouldn't be too awkward to ask someone you are intending to create a child with who their father is.

Here is the thing when you are a healthcare professional , one must abide by not only law but also ethics. He violated so many ethics . Ok , the law was not fully up to date with sperm donors guidelines in the 70s and 80s . However, thinking is ok to use personal DNA to impregnate 70+ women is wrong. That was an abuse of power. One of the biological adult children said it best when he talked about the possibility to date mistakenly a half-sibling, thus producing special needs children because of that same DNA. Seriously, it is a miracle that no half-siblings dated and had children together, unknowingly, because of that ridiculous stunt he pulled.

He didn't violate any of the commandments of the bible( assuming god exists ) so no. What he did makes absolute sense if you look at it from the biological imperative to have your genes survive in the next generation(s) which is all that matters in the game of life. The traits of people that will be born 100 or 200 years from now will be the ones of the people that managed to spread their DNA. Simply raising a child that isn't yours does nothing in this sense, your traits will disappear anyway.

@maywalker997
@maywalker997 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Growing up I suffered a lot of neglect and abuse from my mother, but I still desired to have this relationship with her (I craved a normal mother daughter dynamic). She subjected me to things that any rational observer would have told me to quit all contact with her for good, but this was a lot easier said that done. Towards the end of my relationship with her, it was surreal because 1. I knew she was bad for me & 2. I no longer desired a relationship with her, and yet despite knowing all this I had to use this astonishing strength to forcefully sever the ties within my heart to her to finally cut off my relationship with her (and it was a hard, fraught & painful process). Eventually I did succeed in cutting her out of my life (& heart) for good, but recovery from such a toxic relationship is proving to take years to recover from. So if I have found it this difficult to cut out someone who was proactively evil and sadistic towards me, then in takes little stretch of imagination in my mind to see how someone could try to rationalise a relationship with (and actions of) a biological "parent" who has never purposefully harmed them. If anything, given the huge void (the lack of directly knowing and familiarity with) that exists in such an odd situation, I think it would create ideal breeding grounds for the offspring to seek to give their bio parent a lot of benefit of the doubt (especially when most people in such situations are trying to understand their own identity through the half of that person who made them). After all, why would anyone want to consider what a monster that man was when doing so would also mean accepting that you too by proxy are cut from the same cloth as that monster? Much easier to rationalise the situation (and just try to focus on the person's positive sides) than to contemplate the dark nature of what went on...

There was one report about a doctor sort of doing this same exact thing. There is a big difference though. The doctor in the States used his sperm if say the husbands failed. His argument was somewhere along the lines of, "I don't see the problem. You wanted a baby."

@@TheNexusChan I remember hearing of a case, and I forget the name of the town but it was a small town, where the doctor at a fertility clinic used his own sperm in place of other donors. I think it was estimated that he was the father of something like 128 kids, which was a rough estimate. Still, an lot of friggin kids fathered by the same man. Besides the fact that he deceived these women, the biggest concern was that because all of these kids were born and raised in this same small town, that when they grew up there was a strong possibility that they’d unknowingly end up dating and/or marrying, and then reproducing with their own half-siblings. 😬

I heard of a donor who, whilst he doesn't want children, nevertheless attended a clinic three times a week whilst he was at college. He may have hundreds of children. There's no way of knowing because the fertility clinic he went to folded, and no one knows what happened to their records. However, he was smart enough to realise that if he, or a close relative, put their DNA on a database, then the children would come calling. However, his mother wanted to fill out some gaps in her family tree, and, against his wishes, had her DNA uploaded. Two of his daughters had found each other by now, and knew they were donor conceived, so were, like the Karbaat children, waiting for others to appear, when they were matched with their grandmother. He's not a happy bunny, and wants to take legal action against the DNA database for encroaching on his privacy because the clinic promised him lifelong anonymity.

As someone who was born through IVF, this topic is one that doesn't get enough attention and coverage and is unfortunately not well known to the public. Since the 1970's, FOR PROFIT sperm banks and fertility clinics have gotten away with malpractice with absolutely no government oversight. People need to understand that in the U.S. and across the world, this science results in the literal creation of human beings and the painfully complex affects that donor anonymity and negligence has on donor-concieved (DC) adults/children like myself and their families cannot be understated. Luckily, in the DC community, people born through this process have been advocating for legislation to give us DC children rights to our genetic identity and the ability to know the identity of our biological parents and siblings but unfortunately we're playing catchup and often can't charge doctors and clinics who committed these crimes back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. I'm so happy that these people's stories are being told because I can't imagine what it was like being in their shoes, but this topic is not a joke and I'm really hoping VICE covers this more.

Wow that's wild, in Germany we have such a similiar case, also happening in the 1970's and 1980's. Everytime there was a problem with the donor, like if he just cancelled the appointment, the doctor donated his own sperm (or sometimes asked the employees to donor) and has possibly hundreds of children. He never thought it would come out, because the parents agreed they wouldn't ask and children can only ask for documents when they are 18. The duty to save the documents ends unfortunately after 10 years, so normally he would have a good chance that nobody would find out. But one child desperately wanted to know who the real father is, was even in court and demanded answers from the doctor (not knowing this man is her father) whithout results. Eventually she took a DNA test and found a relative in Canada, who made the connection back to the german doctor. More and more people are demanding him to reveal which sperm donations he did himself, but he doesn't want to find his biological children and does not want any contact. Last thing I read about it was, that some people grouping together want to get him to court again... The whole story came out just some years ago..
