In Texas they have the felony substance abuse facility program SAFPF. I did 10 months of that to try and not get a felony on my record and it was my biggest regret in life not just doing state jail time for my charge. That program was more traumatizing than just doing time. They try and mix rehab with prison and it just doesn’t mix. Half the day you do groups for rehab with counselors then the rest of the day you are treated like an animal and degraded. Jail and prison is no way to safely rehabilitate someone from drug addiction. And it has a really bad success rate. It’s a revolving door and the guards know that so they tell you they’ll see you soon on your last day when you leave.

@xenostim

Yep. the price fluctuates but the value of being able to send one letter with one stamp remains the same. How did you stay sane in the SHU for so long? was it solitary confinement?
@jacksonbauer5199
@jacksonbauer5199 Жыл бұрын
I was indeed solitary during my time in SHU. I was able to make it through by creating a schedule and sticking to it. Working out multiple times a day, reading what I could get my hands on, mathematics, thought experiments, etc. Remaining focused on the fact that eventually my time there would end was also helpful. If you look at a 15 mile march as 15 miles, it can be daunting. However, if you break that down into constituent pieces and provide yourself some small “reward” for reaching milestones, you arrive at your destination wondering how the journey already took place. Perspective and perception are two disciplines I became intimately acquainted with during my time alone. Hope this answered your question, if you have anything else you would like to know, feel free to ask.

I was a re- entry worker in central New York, and hope to volunteer with the Institute for Justice. One of the criteria for the re- entry job is that you had to have been incarcerated. I caught a few misdemeanors, but, being a white guy, I never did more than a few months in several county jails. I did solitary in one jailhouse, for rec they had a large room inside the block that had no ceiling, it was open to the sky. Each inmate was allowed one hour of rec per day, where we would pace the floor of the rec in circles. One day while pacing, I spit on the rec floor. The lieutenant saw me do this on camera, and told me that he was confining me to my cell indefinitely. The lieutenant asked me: "How would you like it if I came to your house and spat on your floor"? I told him: "If you came to my house, I would lock you in the bathroom and only let you out for an hour a day". He didn't like my reply. So for the rest of my bid, I remained locked in my tiny single bed cell. The only human contact was when an orderly opened the little slot on the cell door at mealtimes, or whenever a C.O, would peek through the tinted window on the cell door while making their rounds. Being in solitary messes with the mind. Nothing in life on the outside can prepare you for it. All that I had for distraction was some jailhouse stationery, a pen, and some magazines. I would write clever messages to the C.O.'s, which I would stick to the cell window with toothpaste: "Inmate has escaped and has gone home, please clean out this cell". etc. One day I had a brainstorm: at the rear of the cells were some tiny corner shelves for inmates to place their toiletries on. I carefully tore out some ad photos of high- end wristwatches and other expensive bling, from magazine ads, and arranged the pictures on one of the tiny shelves at the back of the cell. The next C.O. who peeped through my cell window pulled out his keys and yelled: "Ginter, where the hell did you get that contraband"? He opened the cell door only to discover that I had punked him using some cut out magazine photos. He slammed the cell door on his way out, and I laughed my ass off. With no means to tell time, or even to know what day it is while in solitary, you lose track of time. I could have been confined to that cell for months, or it could have been years for all I know. The minute that my time in solitary was up. I RAN to one of the phones on the block concourse and called my assigned counsel. She said: "OH- Andy! Sorry, I forgot that you were still in jail". My best advice is to try to stay out of jail.

You have no idea how important books letters and music are and even just feeling a softer surface then concrete or steel would make a persons day. I would always ask to go to mental health office because they had wood desks and a leather exam table/bed and the break that would give me something like a total of 15min including the walk. People got to realize that whatever crime the person has commited has already happened. We cant change that and usually nothing really effective can be done. So instead we focus on the punishment. It never really works. Harsh punishment just breeds more crime. When we tell people they are worthless and deserve to be punished then they will never break the cycle of crime. We have to care about criminals. Because they are still people even if they hurt other people. Its complicated but I know we can figure it out!

And now its like a hustle to be a content creator with the craziest stories. it's all BS. I've been locked up. its like a break from life, you literally have zero responsibilities on the outside world. you sleep, read, play cards, watch tv if they have it. You mostly wait to eat or to get your commissary. They guys fighting, stabbing, extorting...they are doing all that by choice. it's the same thing they'd be doing on the streets. Mind your own business, respect others space and possessions and you'll be fine. there are circumstances that cant be avoided though. we had a guy come in foir child support, he kept his head down and wouldnt speak at all so a couple guys decided to take his dinner. 2 corn dogs. they asked for them, he didnt say anything. then they threatened to slap him unless he gave up his corndogs. he should have stood up and at least let the guys know he was willing to fight for his food when threatened. he didnt, so one guy reached over his shoulder and took hid corn dog. the new guy grabbed his arm and tried to wrestle it away from him. now he was sitting down and the other guys were standing. when he was holding the first guys arm, the second guy sucker punched him hard and he fell over and hit his head on the edge of the metal table next to him. then the first guy kicked him in the head when he hit the concrete. The guy died. over a corndog and child support. the 2 aggressors got 15 years each for manslaughter, they plead that down from 2nd degree murder. if you are ever in a situation like that, no matter how scared you are. stand up for yourself. you may lose but you'll be alive and gain respect for not backing down. also dont be antisocial or a wierdo. it attracts bullies.

There should be a difference in prisons on how someone is treated based on what they did. Someone that commits murder and did several times before they were caught deserves NO human rights. You take someone's life, you lose the right to yours. However, people on drug charges deserve to be in rehab not jail. It's sick that poor people go to jail for lesser offenses when the rich and famous can get away with murder, drug charges, reckless driving which kills someone (Caitlyn Jenner several years ago) or spousal abuse.

Because it's destroying human lives and souls, stop thinking about it like it's harmless. Drugs are bad, period. The people who sell them, and whoever is addicted to them. BOTH. ARE. WRONG. Now, condemnation and prison time may not be the right choice for every case, but I think in some cases, it helps people out a lot. You are forced to be sober and can focus on changing your life around, either by gaining your GED, or getting clean off the drugs. This is to deter people from living down this hell hole of a life. Let’s all promote the use of contraband in prison. But really proud of them for doing something with their lives and not things that would return them to prison. Some in prison live better than me from phones, tvs, food, music, basketball and can just chill. If I ever see a lazy boy and a hot tub in a cell then I’m going.

I write this from a close security prison. Normal guys come in here and then this place messes them up. The way prisons are run in America is not in line with American values. This is not the answer.

Something to ask people about are what they perceive the differences to be between the US incarceration experience compared to other, often considered inhumane conditions, like gulags or prisons in other countries Americans tend to think are "worse". People tend to trip over their thoughts in these situations and sometimes end up, at best, equating these experiences or even calling the US incarceration experience "worse".

How about instead of busting out a scale and weighing who's dignity and humanity you think is harmed more you just think "humans everywhere should be treated with a basic level of dignity - because their humans" Many of the spots your talking about are piss poor 3rd world countries. The areas outside the prison don't look much better then the ones inside. Gulags are political in nature and not something anyone outside of the effected country can ultimately do much about. It sucks across the board. Each coming with a different set of problems.

I don’t even have a TikTok account but if I did having a channel focused on the time I spent locked up would be the last thing I would talk about. These idiots are trying to glamorize doin time and anyone who’s spent enough time behind those walls don’t wanna think about it nonstop post EOS. I went in at 19 an did 72 months in FL DOC and I try to hide it and avoid talking about it at all costs. Kids are corny af nowadays.

STill sounds like they haven't figured out their argument. I agree with if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Yes we make mistakes, but when those mistakes are against your societies collective morals, then society sends you to think about yourself. Don't forget, as shitty as your conditions are, IM PAYING FOR THEM SO YOU CAN LEARN YOUR LESSON. Alternatives anyone?

I have my doubts that Orange is the New Black is mainly a fashion cliche. It seems obvious to me that it’s implying prisoners are the new African American, the new stigmatized group. However, something tells me Piper wants to distance herself from that interpretation, as it seems more racially insensitive now, especially coming from a white woman; something tells me African Americans don’t want to be told their no longer the oppressed people, from a white woman, especially when they’ve been the one primarily wearing orange.
@AshleyOrben

People say all the time oh this color or that color is the new black because black is a timeless color that's always fashionable I don't think it has anything to do with being an African American.

Not with reference to people shown here, but violent criminals traumatize people for life. They should be locked up to prevent recurrence. Fraudsters ruin people for life. Heavy sentences might deter them, but in any event will properly punish them (retribution).

1090 Jake is a terrible person. He’s not reformed, bragged about stabbing people and knocking people out, and still claims blood. He also tries to expose snitches and get them hurt. He is an awful example. I agree with you lockdown 23 and 1 tho, he’s a good dude and knows what he’s talking about.
