The Ball-Catching Expert Who Caught A-Rod's 3000th Hit

Zack Hample isn't your typical fan at a ball game. He's there to snag baseballs, and do it with a studied, meticulous approach. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we hung out with the "Ball Hawk" in the days following his catch of Alex Rodriguez's 3000th hit. While in some ways it served as the pinnacle of his time in the stands it also brought with it a firestorm of media coverage and public opinion that wasn't always friendly. Life can be lonely in the bleachers, too.

Really sad that people decided to hate the guy before they even knew what the end result would be... Without him holding on to that ball, $150,000 would have never gone towards cancer research for kids... This guy did exactly what he should have done, and what I would have done... Hold on to the ball and don't jump to any quick decisions and try to figure out the best end result. He could have easily sold that ball at auction for life changing money yet decided to go the best route possible where everyone wins. This guy is a complete badass in my book. He handled the situation PERFECTLY while thousands of dumb asses would have never ended up doing what he did. All you haters are a joke, I'll end it at that.

People need to chill and stop hating this guy for catching the damn ball. There's no rule that says you have to return the 3000 hit ball. $150,000 is pocket change for the Yankees they should have paid him $500,000
@randyporter3491
@randyporter3491 5 жыл бұрын
Catching hit balls is a big part of baseball. Zack caught a special ball, after buying a prime location ticket, being ready and making the catch. This is a valuable ball and potentially worth a good bit of money (to him), that is pennies to the Team and even A-Rod. So let’s be fair, all the haters who trashed Zack, “claim” they would give it back immediately. But would they ? It’s easy to say that, until YOU have $50,000 - $250,000 in your hand. Zack was badgered into what he did eventually, but he could have auctioned the ball, gave $150,000 to his charity and still had plenty left over. He should have gotten something out of this, whether you like him or not. I just don’t believe all the hate mail was written by “saints” who would have handed it over. Sorry.

When the world paints you as a money hungry, terrible person, but deep down, all this guy wanted was to own that baseball forever simply for the fact that it made him happy and proud that he achieved one of the peaks of something he has put hours, days and years into doing. On top of it, when he did one of the hardest things for him to do, giving the ball back, he did it in recognition of a charity. The world needs more passionate individuals that work hard at what they love, with good hearts like yours Zack Hample.

I don't really understand why giving it back to him was such a necessity. It's like the old adage "give it to the kid." You are not required to give the ball to them. Is it a nice gesture, sure, but they have many more years of attending games in them. Sooner or later, they can get a tossup themselves. Same with A-Rod's 3000th hit. You're not required to give it back to him. I think of it as winning the lottery. You get $300M and according to this, people expect you to spend it on developing countries in Africa, helping the homeless, and not for yourself because YOU have money. (for buying food, gas, clothes, etc.) That's dumbass logic right there. He can keep the ball if he wants. So what if he has 8000 baseballs?

I went to Yankee Stadium with my friend on around September 20th last year for a game of the Red Sox vs the Yankees. During batting practice I was blown away when I saw this guy standing a few rows behind me. I run to go tell my dad "hey this is that guy who collects balls" and before I knew it Big Papi hits one right over to us. I could never have gotten to it, but my friend who didn't come with me to talk to my dad runs and picks up the ball, beating out Zack. And he shows me the ball and as we were walking back to our parents another line drive shot comes and almost decapitates me. After that I heard Zack cursing my friend out under his breath and just being generally mad. I said hi and stuff, but like what the hell man? You have over 10 thousand balls and you get upset when a kid gets his first? Pretty cool guy though

Zack is my hero...and I'm older than he is. He is totally committed to his passion, spreads positivity and the love of baseball. His videos are must-see for anyone visiting a stadium for the 1st time. He's learned 30 languages to be able to speak to any ballplayer in their language. He's met Conan O'Brien, and he's authored three books on baseball. What more do you need to admire and love this guy? Jim K in Nashville

The people that said bad things about Zack are just salty that they didn’t catch A-Rod’s 3000th hit
