VICE "Red Cards" revisits the 2007 NBA betting scandal. We follow the character of Jimmy "the sheep" Battista, the mastermind behind the scandal and the one who sparked NBA referee Tim Donaghy betting on his own games.
For the first time, Battista opens up about his side of the story, letting us in on the seduction of sports gambling and the regrets he now carries with him. Journalists, former NBA All-Star Kenyon Martin, and an ex-FBI detective all weigh in, as we try to unpack just how a scandal of this magnitude could have occurred.
Presented by Ryot.

He probably got a few more millions in an offshore bank for doing so. Doing 15 months in a country club aint shit. Probably gets a woman and his wife sent to him once each a week. Shit. Some of those country clubs you can leave and walk through town, shop, eat do what ever you want you just have to be home at a certain curfew. Rediculous.

I read Tim Donaghy's book in which he mentions the NBA plays favorites. Jordan and Kobe Bryant for example were going to get the calls. Not good for entertainment value to have either player sitting on the bench for too long. Then there are the playoffs and which teams are better suited for ratings. NBA officials were never told specifically but it was understood who TV preferred to see in the Finals. Early in Donaghy's career the NBA decided there was too much traveling during the games. Officials were told to make more calls. So, Donaghy made a traveling call during a Chicago game against MJ after he spun towards the basket and scored. When Phil Jackson screamed, Donaghy explained the league was clamping down on traveling. Jackson, yelled back, "Yes, but not on HIM!" meaning Jordan.

So much of this story is missing from this video. Namely the numerous phone calls that Donoghy made to CURRENT NBA referee Scott Foster during his betting streak. Also the fact that Donoghy won the majority of his bets on games that he did not officiate. He attributed this to knowing the relationship between the refs and players being reffed as well as internal memos that the NBA sent to officials with 'areas of focus'. Donoghy may have been the scapegoat but theres way more to this story than the public may ever know

Michael Longstreet.... that's exactly the problem with this documentary. Yes, he broke the rule, could not bet... but he actually won the majority of the bets where he did not officiate. good for him. one way or another, way to many insiders profiting from this. then you have someone like donoghy taking the hit for the team.. probably also arranged between themselves.

This all goes back to the Knicks winning the 1985 1st round draft pick which they used on Patrick Ewing because David Stern *"froze"* the envelope to ensure that Sacramento did not get that pick instead. The Kings did themselves no favors by blowing game 4 and game 7 but Donoghy was under orders to make sure that the Kings did not advance to the 2002 NBA Final.

The NBA will never really recover from this scandal. And the reason isn't because of the scandal itself. Donaghy was shady, but he also gave info on how Stern would shape games via video instructions, as well as existing biases of refs. He passed info about games being ref'd by other people, not just his own games. Everyone knows Jordan was protected and Iverson was hated, but there was much more. Stern controlled the PR masterfully and put it all on Donaghy and deflected any suspicion of his office. Stars were elevated and game 7s pulled out of this air.

This makes it seem like Tim was only betting on games he officiated and had direct influence over. In actuality, Tim was betting on ALL the NBA games and had a 75% success rate. How? He knew relationships between officials, players and coaches and how those friendships and feuds influenced the calls and how that in turn, influenced to a great degree the outcomes of games. The bigger problem is how much the league and the officials steer game outcomes to their liking and that hasn't changed. Tim Donaghy took advantage of the NBAs overt bias but nothing was done to eliminate the bias itself. This story pins everything on Tim but the problem is much larger than that. Read Tim's book and judge for yourself.

Definitely the fix was in for the Suns-Spurs playoff. I would call it the worst officiated series I've ever seen, but it appears the referees knew exactly what they were doing. Like an archery competition where the archer misses so badly they kill someone in the crowd, but kill exactly who they meant to in the crowd.
