In this video Vicki takes you on a tour of Berkhamsted Castle, Hertfordshire.
Though not well known, the castle is actually the site of one of the most significant moments in English history. No more than a ruin today, plans are in place to redevelop the site, building a visitor centre to showcase more of the castle's important past.

Hi Vicki. There are signs in neighbouring Chesham that say "Berkhampstead Road", so spelling has always been a bit undecided. Locals just say "Berko"! (I'm from Amersham, and used to visit/work in Berko, only a 20 minute drive over the hills). Thanks for a great video :)

The emphasis is on the 'Ber'. Interestingly in nearby Chesham you can find a 'Berkhampstead Road'. Not sure who it was spelled like that; maybe an admin error or maybe something more historic. No idea.

The 'French' Normans were actually Vikings from Denmark, who held the area now known as Normandy. They were granted the land to stop further incursions into an emerging France. It's a fascinating era to study.

Watching a ton of _Time Team_ which I recently discovered made me _cringe in horror_ when you said that the 19th-century railroad actually _cut through_ the castle. I can just _hear_ archeologists expressing utter disgust at how the hamfisted navvies just plowed through all that archeology without a care in the world, and probably robbed away stones to boot.

These days, the spelling has settled on Berkhamsted, but that was only actually finally decided on in 1937. Prior to that, there are dozens of different spellings - Berkhampstead, Berkhamsteed, Berkampsted, etc, etc - and those do persist in some places, either just through longevity* or copying older sources. More interestingly, it's a name which has a non-intuitive pronunciation, and which isn't quite in common with the standard "rules" of pronunciation (nor well enough known that people learn it as an exception). The local pronunciation is closer to Berkum-sted. (Or, for people who can read IPA: /ˈbɜːrkəmstɛd/ ) * For example, a surviving** "Town Class" narrowboat, built 1936, has its name spelt "Berkhampstead", which was a valid spelling at the time. ** Although, being pedantic, it's probably the case the original "Berkhampstead" was scrapped by mistake and "Ayr" was renamed to cover up the error.

Flints held together by mortar... even when there’s facing stone (often plundered for later construction) that’s at the core. When the flints are deliberately exposed because there’s no money fir facing stone, they’re often split and the prettiest halves used as decoration. Or so it’s struck me on visits to England.
