Whilst in Newcastle for other videos, our friend David set the challenge to see if we could visit five castles in just one day. I was shocked to discover we weren’t travelling by train, but I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to see so many beautiful castles.

Chillingham castle was my childhood playground! My dad was the warden for the chillingham cattle. The castle was still derelict back then and an exciting place to explore as a kid! You missed out on another castle on your way from chillingham to bamburgh.... Ros Castle... not an actual castle, it’s a hill fort, but from there you can see seven other castles.

We went to Chillingham last year and agreed that it was possibly the most bonkers castle in the UK. The owner (who has done a great job of restoring, but not over-restoring it) is clearly as mad as a box of frogs with a magpie-like collection habit. The highlight for us was the room full of torture implements which is creepy in the extreme. Beautiful surroundings as well - don't miss it if you're in the area.

Great challenge. Great footage even though you technically had little time to film much at each site. Thank goodness you caught the crossing on time which means you had plenty of time to get back before you washed the tyres. Trust Geoff to hijack with the railway viaduct. Anyone would think it was his channel 🤣😂 Thanks for another great Vicki explores. Stay safe everyone. 🙏

Northumberland is such a fantastic county. I've visited all but Edlingham castle and went inside them all. Another one well worth a visit is Dunstanburgh but you have to walk there because there isn't a road. About a mile and a half north along the coast from Craster. It's a ruin, but spectacular and in a stunning location.

During the summer of 1978, I spent a month doing "All the Castles" by train. It is not very easy to do since they tend not to have consulted train timetables when deciding where to build castles (or is it tended to ignore where the castles were in building train stations?). I think we did about 60 in the month (almost all free with National Trust pass) with the biggies like Harlech, Conway, Caernarvon (yes, I liked Wales) plus a bunch around York to the Scottish Border and even the Cinque Ports, but my favorite was little Castell Coch near Cardiff (I know, not really a "proper" castle as it was built in the 19th century) with a great view as you are walking up to it. We had to go to Caerphilly Castle due to the engine and Coch was nearby.

If you'd gone down the side of Alnwick Castle on the same bit of road by the entrance, you'd get a great view from the bridge with the Percy Lion. The lion is famous because it is fierce and roaring with a straight tail, standing noble in front of the castle; except that it looks as if it had been suddenly discombobulated by someone shoving a broom handle up its arse. The tail fell off many years ago and all that has been left was the straight forming rod. I don't know if it has been repaired, but it's always worth a picture cos of how silly the poor cat looks. The Holy Island Causeway used to be a firing range in WW2. I remember as a kid collecting a bucket of bullets in the dunes facing the mainland. The bullets were all the business ends except for one casing, which was a bit odd, considering this was the receiving end of the range.

Vicki, just looking at your various VE (Vicki explores...) titles. While looking at the ones that you have already done I thought it would be good if you were to do a few in Scotland and maybe later some in Wales. But the one place I really thought would be well worth covering in Scotland is a city that your husband Geoff likes and that is Edinburgh. Dundee would also make a great video. And to maybe balance things up a little bit maybe somewhere across in the West of Scotland. Anyway, these are obviously just suggestions. Whatever you do is your own choice. Best of luck.

It's the Edlingham viaduct, on the closed railway between Alnwick and Coldstream, which is visible from Edlingham Castle ( 5:00 ). In answer to Geoff's question, there is no footpath shown across it. As Geoff said, it was known as the Cornhill branch (Coldstream station was actually in Cornhill, on the English side of the River Tweed). The line lost its passenger service in 1930 and, following a landside near Wooler, the section of the line between there and Alnwick was closed in 1953, long before Beeching.
