Anna Buchenhorst

12 жыл бұрын

Victor Borge in Sweden practising a Chopin-valse with Anna(Rundberg) Buchenhorst as a make-up-artist, Joakim Kallhed as a cleaner and Eddie Scoller as host. This recording was made in Gothenburg the 23th of November 1989.
Borge was born Børge Rosenbaum in Copenhagen, Denmark, into a Jewish family. His parents, Bernhard and Frederikke Rosenbaum, were both musicians-his father a violist in the Royal Danish Orchestra[7] and his mother a pianist.[8] Like his mother, Borge began piano lessons at the age of two, and it was soon apparent that he was a prodigy. He gave his first piano recital when he was eight years old, and in 1918 was awarded a full scholarship at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, studying under Olivo Krause. Later on, he was taught by Victor Schiøler, Liszt's student Frederic Lamond, and Busoni's pupil Egon Petri.
Borge played his first major concert in 1926 at the Danish concert-hall Odd Fellow Palæet (The Odd Fellow's Lodge building). After a few years as a classical concert pianist, he started his now famous "stand up" act, with the signature blend of piano music and jokes. He married American Elsie Chilton in 1933, the same year he debuted with his revue acts. Borge started touring extensively in Europe, where he began telling anti-Nazi jokes.
When the Nazis occupied Denmark during World War II, Borge was playing a concert in Sweden, and managed to escape to Finland. He traveled to America on the USS American Legion, the last neutral ship to make it out of Petsamo, Finland, and arrived 28 August 1940, with only 20 dollars , with $3 going to the customs fee. Disguised as a sailor, Borge returned to Denmark once during the occupation to visit his dying mother.
Move to America
Even though Borge did not speak a word of English upon arrival, he quickly managed to adapt his jokes to the American audience, learning English by watching movies. He took the name of Victor Borge, and, in 1941, he started on Rudy Vallee's radio show, but was hired soon after by Bing Crosby for his Kraft Music Hall.
From then on, fame rose quickly for Borge, who won Best New Radio Performer of the Year in 1942. Soon after the award, he was offered film roles with stars such as Frank Sinatra (in Higher and Higher). While hosting The Victor Borge Show on NBC beginning in 1946, he developed many of his trademarks, including repeatedly announcing his intent to play a piece but getting "distracted" by something or other, making comments about the audience, or discussing the usefulness of Chopin's "Minute Waltz" as an egg timer.Or he would start out with some well-known classical piece like Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and suddenly move into a harmonically suitable pop or jazz tune like Cole Porter's "Night and Day" or "Happy Birthday to you".

This sketch was made at the Swedish Televsion in Gothenburg as I was a student. Victor Borge was celebrating his 80th birthday and did a lot of performances in Scandinavia at that time.

Lucky girl, to have worked with Victor Borge; most of his audience nearly ended up hospitalised from laughing too much! Or maybe i should say: lucky Borge, having a pretty & talented make-up artist to mop his brow! Bravo!

What a BRILLIANT sketch!!! Loved the Cleaner!! Victor Borge "struggling" to play the C#minor Valse and the Make-up Artiste and the Piano Polisher "show him how it's done"!! Priceless!!! Did Mr. Borge autograph the gloves after he was finished with them??!!

This is amazing! For one thing, it's not easy to purposefully make a mistake once you've learned a piece. Second, it's not easy to play piano with gloves on.

+ First Last I can confirm that! A favorite of mine, but it takes me a lot of concentration to prevent going astray. I really have to stay on top of it. Valse, C# minor, Op.64 No.2. It's an opus-mate with the Minute Waltz; 64 No.1, Db major. And the other one other, 64 No.3, Ab major, that has a very interestingly rambling nature. I can also confirm that intentional, purposeful mistakes are really hard to pull off.

Thanks for posting, to my account this is the 3rd (televised) impression of the famous Vorges routine of ¨mistakenly¨ playing the Chopin Waltz in C-sharp minor, Op. 64, No. 2 (at bar 22) being the first in Victor Vorge Parody & Music show (NBC,1946) and the second in the London Weekend - Borge Clockwise 1972, being the first one the most really impressive! yet this is the only one including the glove punch

A great entertaining video, Vítor Borges is an excellent pianist, but particularly in this video, a playback seems to have been used, not only because of the nature of the video, but also because it is difficult to play with gloves but also because it is difficult for a pianist to make mistakes when they already have practice in the execution of the piece. It can be seen that in reality they are not playing, just look at the hands and you see that when you hear the last two higher notes, the right hand is no longer on the keyboard, so it’s a play back (the right hand is in the air and not on the keyboard, the notes on a piano range from low to high from left to right), not that they do not know how to play, but because of the difficulties and comedic nature of the video! Or there is a lack of synchrony between the audio and the video, which I don't think because when they speak the sound is synchronized with the mouth.
