As a basketball prospect, Victor Wembanyama is borderline incomprehensible, in the best way possible. He is a confounding, exceedingly rare cross section of extreme size and skillful polish, and he’s a virtual certainty to be the top selection in the 2023 NBA draft. Because most anything seems possible for the 7-foot-3 Frenchman, the mythology about his game and upside has already begun to grow. In this video, J. Kyle Mann lays the foundation for the discussion with some basic explanations about what has scouts so over-the-moon excited about Wembanyama’s future.

As a euro fan, the only issue with his move to Metro is that he's not playing in the Euroleague, and it would have been interesting to see him play against top competition in Europe as a first option, with a bunch of old slavs in the paint who want to beat him up. That is kinda smart from an NBA perspective since it "saves" him from further scrutiny, but at the same time US scouts and media seem to care more about two games against teenagers than the proper pro ball he's been playing for years. Even Luka was questioned after being Euroleague MVP because he didn't play against Kansan and SMU.
@OhDuur
@OhDuur Жыл бұрын
I agree, it's a smart move from him for his future in the NBA but a frustrating move for us, Euroloeague fans. However, going to the Mets 92 allowed so much more freedom to create his own moves, his own shots. Because the Asvel (TP's team in Lyon) have so much more pressure for results, the coach wouldn't let him do those one legged 3pts shots. So we have less game of Victor but probably more minutes on court. We can't see him facing rustic slav centers but the french league is full of athletic guys, no doubts. Also we got to see him play against Lithuania and Bosnia with the french national team and he dominated

@@OhDuur It's a smart move. Wembanyama is now playing under Vincent Collet, a well-respected coach in Europe who encourages young talents. He has a track record coaching French talents and Victor will benefit from Collet's basketball mind.

American here, but I think the idea was both a safety thing for Victor as well as a reps thing. With his previous team Victor *may* have ended up being the first option, but he likely wouldn't have been allowed to go wild and experiment the way he is on Met92 rn. This way he can get in some creation reps without pressure to win win win as he would've in Euroleague where he would've likely had to conform more to a specific role for the sake of the teams success.

Rarest of rare combinations of length, fluidity, skill, and will in a young player. No prospect comes close as far as physical "eye test" goes except the hall of greats like Wilt, Lebron, Kareem. These were guys who as PREP players emerged as bonafide for sure things. Victor is there. Only a injury can derail what will soon be obvious, that this guy is the true NEXT GUY. The guy that the next generation of basketball will be built around. Not a single human alive on a ball court will be able to deal with this kid if the luck of injury and simple nutrition and determination takes hold. VW simply has incredible skills defensively in regards to positioning and IQ, coupled with his outwordly measurables. There situations where he is completely 1-3 feet drifting afar, and as the driver converges on the rim, this guy from feet away is able to swat the shot at the rim. I truly believe this Kid would wake up and in "bust" form be a Robert Gobert with slightly more offense. That means someone who wins multiple DPOY awards, and averages a career double/double with some eye popping occasional nights. This is this kid's FLOOR. The Upside of Wenbanyama is this generations' Wilt Chamberlain. And due to Lebron coming along and devaluing (in some regards)the need for "most championships", the possibility of his numbers and eye popping feats are greatly anticipated. This kid will offer that in abundance. And it won't be the over-generated "simple things" like a breakaway dunk, but rather this guy at this size will nightly make people say WOW; WHAT DID I JUST SEE? Not to mention his versatility and offensive prowess already in a spaced league should offer potential sensational performances beginning in his rookie year. Other unique prospects brought a sense of flair like a Lamelo, Lebron, Zion, Kobe, KG, a Bird, a Magic, and Pistol Pete/Iverson. But Kid with his physical profile offers that and the game to go with it. It's going to be a pleasure watching this kid in the league. There is simply no ceiling barring significant injury what this kid can accomplish. Not too many people have ever existed with this size/skill. I truly will predict that MJ rookie scoring record could be in danger. I think it's a high regard, but not even CLOSE to what my heart tells me this kid can statistically accomplish.

I think most people are rooting for him to stay healthy, because that combination you went over is just so exciting that you don't want it to be taken away from injuries, but history isn't kind to players that tall, but to every rules there has to be an exception, and I don't think I'm alone in hoping he's it, especially since he definitely seems very comfortable with his size since he developed at such an early age.

I think his most important goal that he mentioned is getting strong like Giannis. Obviously Giannis the Freak for a reason, but he was once upon a time a skinny guy from Greece, and look at him now. If Wemby can bulk up a bit, just enough to strengthen his joints and bones from injuries, man, what is the ceiling for him? Greatest player ever? I’m hoping it happens because he could be something we’ve never seen before.

He played the 3 in the 4th quarter in his last game with France. The team that will got him will have insane amount of flexibility, they will be able to play with 2 Center like the CAVS except Wemby can provide spacing cause he can shoot 3´s unlike Mobley, or even with 3-4 Big men, if he land in New Orleans or Magic they could play Valanciunas, Wemby, Zion and Murphy or with Wemby/Bamba, Bol Bol, Wagner and Paolo. Just imagine Wemby and Bol Bol on the same team, these 2 can block shot at the rim AND 3 pointer, and they can both shoot.

Or why not just make him an excellent drop defender who can play around switches and put him in a position to practically use his length defend his side of the half court on defense? When locked in Giannis can do this and offers resistance at every point of attack while even assisting whoever is at the big under the rim to track the ball and protect the rim. There aren't many other bigs who can do this (JJJ to some degree, Bam Adebayo, Evan Mobley) and they are a HUGE asset when it comes to defensive matchups especially come playoff time. Y'know when the 3-balls ain't dropping and the only way to score is to get at the hoop.
