Imagine being in the intense pain of labour..especially with your first labour , and having hundreds of people in the next room all listening in on it.

If my memory serves, in real life there weren't hundreds, only seven (including the Home Secretary) and they were in a drawing-room further down the corridor. But yeah, they could probably still hear the yelling from their drawing-room. I can't believe that it wasn't until 1948 when the then Princess Elizabeth was expecting her first baby, that her father George VI finally put his foot down and declared there would be no witnesses, saying "I hardly think that necessary - out-of-date and ridiculous."

Jenna Coleman must have watched some natural birthing tapes to perform these scenes so beautifully! She is an exceptional actress. I may be a tiny bit prejudiced because Jenna was, still us my favorite Doctor Who companion, but she performed all of the Queen Victoria scenes magnificently! She had good chemistry with her Albert costar, I'm glad it went no further. She deserves much better.

Victoria wasn't a natural mother - her relationships with her kids were quite strained, and after Albert died she was almost manipulatively clingy with them, especially Princess Victoria. The part she enjoyed about this side of her life was the "intimacy" with Albert. I've got no doubt in my mind that if contraception had existed back then, there's a good chance she would've only had Victoria and Albert at most....

I'm pretty sure Dr Locock would have checked things out every so often, but the birth assistants aren't down there at the foot of the bed all the time. I know when I had my babies the midwife would take a look every half hour or so, but the rest of the time she was helping me to walk up and down, checking the babies heartbeat, adjusting the pain relief, writing on the chart, taking my blood pressure, and the dozens of other jobs that monitoring someone in labour entails. They don't just sit and wait down at the business end.

That’s how they handled childbirth back in the 1800s? Nobody helped or coached the mother? They just left her in a room to scream covered in a blanket…wouldn’t the baby suffocate….nobody there to catch the kid when it comes out? Her blankets should have been covered in blood everywhere….. this is so primitive to me. I had a pain killer, a doctor, two nurses, my niece and my mother there to help me. The thought of being in labor for 50 hours or more is just crazy….that’s just crazy.

Every woman is scared. Scared of the unknown in this case as it was her first, scared that the baby would be born alive, scared that she would live herself whether the baby survived or not. Victoria had "conscious sedation" during her last 3 children. This was a few drops of ether on a cloth that a woman would breathe sparingly. This relieved the pain but she was awake enough to move her legs & push. Before that ether would knock a woman out making it difficult to impossible to deliver a child. Mortality rates of babies was 20%. A rise in intervention during childbirth came after tragedy in 1817. Princess Charlotte died 5 hours after a 50 hour labor and stillbirth. All Britain mourned and blame fell on Dr. Croft who later committed suicide. This was when forceps were introduced. There were no episiotomies so women could tear during the birth process giving another chance for infection and death for the mother. Antibiotics were not discovered until the 1920's. As to getting pregnant 8 more times, there was no birth control, even the rhythm method wasn't figured out then. The article I linked said if a couple had "affection for each other", as Victoria & Albert were, a woman could expect to get pregnant every 18 to 24 months. Side note, I think it could be sooner than that. I have an cousin who was devoted RCC, gave birth to her 1st child in September 2000. 13 months later, she gave birth to her 2nd child in October 2001, and 14 months after that, she gave birth to her 3rd child in December 2002! That's only 3 - 4 months between pregnancies! She must have just gotten over her postpartum bleeding when she & her husband were at it again! Imagine how horrible her postpartum depression must have been like! Neither her body nor hormones got the chance to right themselves before she was pregnant again! Sheesh! Even affluent women had midwives who didn't know much about the process. Hand washing was unheard of and the pre-natal practices for the mother was horrific! Pieces of placenta were left in the womb causing infection & death. Fresh air in the birthing room seemed evil by the doctors so all Drapes were drawn, bed curtains as well, a fire was built, then with all of the people pressed in the air became thick & foul. Exercise was strictly forbidden and a woman would lie in bed with only liquids & thin broths for food, causing bowel stoppage which the doctors would then purge the woman with mustard enemas, bleed her, give her emetics to cause vomiting! It's a wonder any mother & child survived! If you want to read about birthing in Victorian times see this site, tinyurl.com/ycyxth9h. Be thankful ladies, that the medical community has evolved and midwives started washing their hands and stopped making Pap to feed the baby by chewing bread w/milk or water & spitting it into a bowl. This was fed to the newborn because the was too weak to have milk or had died. Doctor's found wet nurses for the more affluent mothers because they wouldn't nurse their babies. I had natural childbirth to deliver my twins, with much headshaking by my mother who didn't understand why it was so important to me to see mine come into the world. My husband, sister & mother was with me in both labor & delivery rooms. My mother later said that it was a learning experience for her as she was gassed with my siblings and me. She saw us for the 1st time after we were delivered, cleaned and swaddled, approximately an hour or so later. Our dad saw us before she did through the nursery window! If I had been in Victorian times, the chances for both of my babies to have survived was 15%, the chance that one would have survived, 20% and my chance to have survived, 50%. There was a practice with twins being born among impoverished families that I will not discuss as it was heinous. You can look it up yourselves if you want. Thank goodness modern Obstetrics & Pediatrics were discovered!

@Ivana Well now. Elaborate please. Start off by telling us jow many times you yourself have experienced pregnancy and birth in identical conditions. You DO know that there was no real way to prevent pregnancy then, RIGHT? It is established fact. And you DO know that the various forms of pain relief used today (including Lamaze breathing techniques) were unknown then, RIGHT? Also Vicky was not an acceptable heir. (The circumstances of Victoria inheriting the throne were unique). She HAD to have at LEAST two boys: the classic "heir and a spare", and preferably more.. You DO know that simple fact of European history, yes? Don't go "21st-century-splaining" the 19th century experience of royal childbirth. Have a nice day.
