I purchased a box of used and quite old G scale (about 1/19 scale actually) Mamod railcars and Mamod 16mm (0 gauge) track in anticipation of receiving a new Mamod Mk 3 live steam locomotive from England.
Along with the purchase was a very old original Mamod SL1 locomotive. It half-heartedly sputtered along in forward and ran ok pulling only one car in reverse. These engines don’t have a good reputation but I worked on the cylinder faces and got it running better in reverse. Still, when the lever was set to forward steam hissed from under the front of the engine like crazy.
I made this video and resigned myself that it was going to be a decent cab-forward only runner. Real 2 foot narrow gauge railways are often point to point and so half the time locos were running cab forward anyway.
Then I lay in bed and decided this was not acceptable. So to work on it I went.
