I;ve got one that I saved up Xmas money to buy back in the early 70s. I still fire it up, sometimes on Xmas day, after lunch. Great memories and parts are available from Mamod. I always oil the piston and have descaled it with a kettle descaler. Also, I tend to put part boiled water in it to hasten running temp. You will need gaskets from time to time and the valves and whistle will also need lubrication before use.

I think the slow forward running is probably from calcium buildup in the forward steam pipe; since it probably spent more time running in forward than in reverse, there's probably more lime scale built up in that pipe. When I restore mine I'm going to de-scale the boiler and pipes with dilute vinegar just to make sure it's nice and clean...mom and I always ran it on tap water rather than distilled, and it got used fairly regularly for about 12 years before I went off and joined the Navy, so I'm sure it's pretty gunked up. From having worked on actual, real boilers in the 500MW range, I can tell you distilled water is very much your friend and de-scaling a little guy like this should be really easy to do.

Wow, that's a lot of power! heavy equipment then haha 👌. I bet the slightest build up of scale there would equal big looses in efficiency. Great call, and good idea with the vinegar, might give that a go, even if it doesn't resolve the issue, at least it'll be a good clean👍

@Alfie Gould Yes, but if you do use rainwater you have to run it through a Brita filter first for much the same reasons. Rain washes dirt and dust out of the air as it falls, and you don't want all that gunk left behind in the boiler and pipes.

One of the steam outlet pipes, in this case whichever one releases steam from the piston into the chimney when it runs in forward position, could be clogged up a bit. I myself have no clue which pipe this is though but if you run it one way for a bit you should be able to tell by seeing which pipe gets hot.

I'm not too sure. The only worry I'd have is if the flame from the alternative fuel burnt too hot and possibly damed the engine in some way. With the newer ones, you buy little fuel tablets which you put in a burner tray and they do the same thing :)

Great well explained video. I have just bought a second hand MAMOD TE1A and the assembly is much the same as your steamroller. (still waiting for it to arrive) I do a lot of RC stuff but I have never worked with these steam engines. After looking at the piston cylinder assembly on your steamroller I see that the 3 pipes are aligned with the piston block which has 3 holes and moves up and down as the piston moves in and out. This, I assume lets steam into the piston and the middle hole is the exhaust. You have trouble with forward speed. This could be caused by the forward intake hole having a blockage or not lining up correctly with the intake pipe. It could also be that its not sitting flush with the intake block and therefore you are losing pressure in the forward motion?
@RCEmpire_HQ
@RCEmpire_HQ 6 жыл бұрын
Ohh excellent! 2nd hand is a great way to go with parts still readily available👌. Enjoy it when it arrives, i'm sure you'll love it 🙂. If you check out our disassembly and service video, you can see where the inlet hole is on the piston, and the 3 holes from the pipes on the back plate. The middle pipe is the inlet from the boiler, the top pipe is the exhaust when the piston is in reverse position, and the bottom pipe is the exhaust in forward position, both exhausts going to the chimney (kind of, not massively precise, but I think that was the idea hah). Actually, I didn't think to look for blockages in the pipes. If there's a blockage in the exhaust, steam from the piston won't be able to escape as easily, so i'll definitely check that. But also, as you said, something might not be flush, or part of the back plate might be worn and loosing pressure on one side. I think i'll take it apart in the next few days and have a good look, I also feel like one of the shafts are a slightly misaligned. Thanks for your ideas 🙂
@mikeflight9
@mikeflight9 6 жыл бұрын

You make some great and well explained videos! My brother had one of these in the late ‘70’s - lucky bugger always seemed to get the best presents!!!! I was thinking, when you did the service video for the Mamod, that you should stone-flat and then lubricate the 2 piston/boiler surfaces that touch to optimise their performance. This may help with the poor power when forward is engaged. Keep up the great work my friend and thanks so much for all the vid’s.
@RCEmpire_HQ
@RCEmpire_HQ 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much :) haha Yeah good idea. I did put a straight edge up against them and they seemed to be dead flat. I think they've worn themselves flat over the years, but I guess the question is, have they worn themselves down at an angle, or unevenly. So maybe it is worth very carefully flattening them on a stone like you say. I think come spring or summer I'll pull it apart again and really have a good look.
@philharris256
@philharris256 6 жыл бұрын
I have owned a Mamod traction engine model TE1 since about 1963 and it still runs beautifully. I have just renovated an identical steam roller to yours for a friend, and had no problems with forward or reverse running - try poking out the forward exhaust pipe with a thin wire, the type used by florists is quite useful for this. Then, if you blow gently down the chimney you should get the same amount of air coming out of each of the two exhaust ports. I also stone the cylinder face flat on an oiled stone and polish with a little Brasso afterwards. Make sure there's plenty of oil on the sliding faces and also dribble a little down the cylinder. Thanks for the video and I found the section on the safety valve o-ring helpful.

Haha wow, that would be great to get it up and running after that long. Let us know how it goes. I guess I'd just lubricate the moving parts, and monitor it whilst it heats up, just to make sure there are no major steam leaks or any unsafe leaks which could get worse. Although they are certainly built to last haha Maybe rinse out the tank too first.

I have one of these in the loft, my dad got it me when i was a little boy but i think it was deemed a bit too dangerous for a 6yr old to play with as a working model! i never knew how to even get it to work so this video is great, i have my own boy now so it needs to come out of the darkness of the loft and spring into life! I was wondering about the difficulty in moving forward - without having any knowledge of these things, could it just be because as a rear wheel drive unit, it is struggling to push the rest of the model forward, wheras in reverse there is nothing in front of those big wheels?
@RCEmpire_HQ
@RCEmpire_HQ 6 жыл бұрын
haha, yeah, we've had a few close calls with this one over the years hah. That's amazing, I bet it's in pretty good condition too. You should definitely get it out, they're great fun for spring and summer when you can get them outdoors :) Interesting, I never thought of it from that point of view. It's possible, especially with when the steering gets involved with more resistance in one direction. The strange thing is, in the video on our static test section, we've got the drive wheel raised, and it still seems to go slower. So i'm not sure if that would be a factor in this one.

@RCEmpire_HQ
@RCEmpire_HQ 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I guess technically you could. I'd go for a material with a controllable / consistent flame, just so the whole thing doesn't catch fire 🙂, and some materials may burn hotter than others and, maybe damaging the parts, so it may need a little experimenting to get it right. But I don't see why not if you find a good substitute. Would be cool to hear find something :)

You must never ever do that it is very bad for the boiler and it strains the boiler because you are taking it from one temperature extreme to another in a very short time and this puts it under a huge strain and over time this can eventually make the boiler unsafe for use.

That's it - I use boiled distilled water for my Midwest Products steam-powered launch. Also I use jelled-methanol (Sterno) for fuel.

Every time you steam your engine with tap water, you shorten it's life! You should use distilled water instead.I would think you would know better! You also forgot to check your safety valve! On re3verse, you are hitting 1 and 2, but when forward, you push the lever beyond 1 and 2, which is why it runs better in reverse!

No, this is an SR1a - the SR1 only went forward, no reverse. And the SR1 was assembled with screws rather than pop-rivets, hence being referred to as "nuts and bolts".

They are very cheaply built, I have spent over £500 on various new wilescos and theyer quality control is so crap that I always end up sending them back because all they want to do is rob people of there cash and give you something that has been poorly put together.
