Victoria Underground station now has step free access to all platforms with the introductions of new lifts, along with the new escalators and passageways that are all part of the station upgrade. We went for a look around ... !
Victoria Tube has become the Underground's 75th step free station (Out of 270, that's now 28%) with more to follow.
Step free access guides and maps on TfL's website, here: tfl.gov.uk/transport-accessib...

It's great that London Underground are putting in step free access. I am someone who struggles with mobility and it's been so daunting to go into London. Out last trip in to the capital was via St Johns Wood (we did *that* crossing before going into the city) and I have to say, the lifts make it so much easier.

2:00 I'm glad to see that, after you pass through the gate-line, you can access all 3 tube lines. (One trap I fell into, back in 2006, was to go through the gate-line and then look for signs to the platform. I didn't realise that one gate-line leads only to the Victoria line.)

I stayed near Victoria station when I went to London in 2016 and I couldn't stand riding the tube at Victoria station, too congested - so what I did was I walked down to Pimlico station and took the Victoria line from there

It’s often a good idea to change at quieter stations. Between the Piccadilly and District I change at Barons Court, avoiding the Hammersmith crowds, for example. And if you are changing from rail to underground at Waterloo a short walk to Southwark or Lambeth North can save lots of crowd-stress.

The new step-free access at Victoria, is such a great relief to know! Though I was very shocked to find before the 2012 London Olympics, when so very many people would have been flying in through Gatwick, there was no access to the Underground at Victoria except via that long flight of steps. I had contacted TFL to ask, as that had always been a horrendous obstacle for the route between Liverpool Street and Gatwick! Many times, on returning from travels and with heavy bags, I had to walk up Victoria Street very late at night and face a long wait in bitter weather, for a bus to Liverpool Street. Not a very pleasant end to an enjoyable holiday! Hopefully all their lifts will be kept in full working order.

The lifts from the National Rail concourse to the Tube ticket hall are not obvious. The corridor to them lacks signage to make it obvious. I saw a buggy carried down the stairs as people had missed the lifts. However, the facilities are a big improvement and the next Tube Map should report them.

You have to be careful to take the correct escalators down to the Victoria Line now - take the old left hand ones to go straight down to the platform (and be at the correct end for exiting into King's Cross), take the new right hand ones to walk half a mile around the tunnels before getting to the platform. It's like King's Cross St Pancras, although last time I went through, there was a stand with a flipchart pad on it with a sign saying "Victoria Line - the quick way" and a large arrow pointing to the left.

Once upon a time Victoria Underground station was a single booking hall with a passimeter straddling the running lines and platforms for the District and Circle lines. It was sited under the arcade that ran inside a building sited between Victoria St and the LT bus station in Terminus Place. Well, that's my memory from 55 years ago as a 7 year old toddling off to school every day by Q & R stock trains. That and the rather wonderful sweet shop, in a corner of the arcade, owned by what appeared to my eyes even then by a surprisingly small of stature Portuguese family. 1/4 of aniseed candy twist please ! No tunnels, no lifts and no Victoria line then. What have they done ?

upgraded victoria is now a veritable maze of corridors, stairs and escalators with a lot of redundancy, which is a good thing of course. do they plan to use these parallel routes to control pedestrian flows like in kings cross sp? access to the coach station is still atrocious, with signs from the D&C actually pointing towards the victoria street exit, resulting in a 10 minute walk down buckingham palace road. I suppose that at least separates coach station foot traffic from the main station.
