A little trip down part of the river Croal in Bolton with a look at an old Victorian-era cobbled street then off into the culvert itself to find some amazing history!

19 people killed here. The old black & white photo at the end of the video shows the bridge on Bank st going over the river croal. In the centre is a warehouse with multiple floors. The top floor had a small nightclub called The Top Storey club. May 1961 19 people lost their lives after a fire at the bottom of the staircase the only way in or out trapped them. Sixteen inside and five jumped down into the river Croal with two surviving the jump.More information is available online. The Top Storey club, Bolton.

Explored it all many times your best doing it in winter at 1 in the morning on a wet dank night it sets the seen in your mind of how hard life use to be. At night turn out your torches and just listen it's amazing you hear ungodly sounds with the wind howling and echoing the rat's are amazing with the light on you may see one or 2 scuttling away but if you turn it off you can hear them squealing away flick the light back on and there everywhere. I have even bumped into homeless people sleeping down there.

I was visiting Bolton about 2 years ago and was in this area, which is at the bottom end of Central street where the croal is, I was trying to find my first place of work when I left school in 1963. You will find unless I'm mistaken that the two bridges led to Proffits radio and televsion workshops one leading to a loading bay and the other one to a stores warehouse where the tv tubes were stored . The area under the bridge that is blocked off is brook street which ran down the side of the old market hall and joined Bridge street after going under Knowsley Street tunnel , I have used this route many times when I was a van driver for them . Proffits building was on two levels the entrance being on Bark Street next to the lads club. I think the area you was in , later in the vid is Knowsley street new market hall and shopping mall which they built over the croal.

@@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt Yes if you walk down central street to the end were the croal is , the building directly in front of you with the big boarded up windows is Proffits workshop and stores, with the loading bay bridge blocked off for safety reasons, If you can get access to this building it would be interesting to see whats in there , I'm not sure when Proffits pulled out of there I think it was the late 70s, good luck with the access mate, might be able to help you out if you get inside.

Hi my fellow northern brother, from another mother. Great video. Glad you braved the darkness, the rats, and the alligators, to bring us such awesome footage. Such a shame about the drug paraphernalia. With needles and sewerage to contend with you could do with some safety kit. Another belter there lad 👌 Just did a quick search on that ‘john lever harwood bolton’ pot and got an of interesting links: www.boltonsmayors.org.uk/lever-j.html .... A quick snippet: ‘He was a leading gooseberry grower, with a wide reputation for over 60 years. In 1873 he exhibited the largest berry in England at the Beehive Inn, Clifton. This was a yellow 'Garibaldi', being 32dwts and 17grs (about 51g.) The nearest to this was attained by Joseph Smith, of Newport, his 'Bobby', a red berry shown at Manchester weighed 32dwts and 10grs. He had over 200 trees in his garden and could charge 10 shillings for a sprig from one tree called 'Twin.' He was an Oddfellow and was associated with the Royal George, No. 45, Manchester Unity, whose headquarters were at the Unicorn Inn, Spindle Point’. Madness, sounds like our kind of guy 😂😂😂👍
