I've been using this SAK daily for the last couple of months. I've been impressed with it performance and consistency! What SAK/Multi-tool do you use?

I have the red handled version I love it wouldn't trade it for anything I keep it in my everyday bag I go day hiking almost every day. Retired at (66) there is so much that you could do with just this simple knife.

A noted Victorinox instructor recommends that, if you must baton an SAK, you do it with the blade in the half-open position. I carry a Rangergrip 78 (I like the red scales; they're harder to lose) and a Fieldmaster

Agreed. Felix Immler has a ton of videos showing the versatility of the SAK and he always batons in the half open position. It’s very helpful in places where carrying a fixed or locking blade is just not possible.

The reason for batoning at 90° is to protect the locking mechanism & joint from shock.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't use this technique a ton, but holding the end of the blade by the locking mechanism achieves a similar effect. Thanks for sharing the info!

@@adaptablesurvival I beg to differ. Having the blade locked open while batoning puts an unnecessary strain on the locking mechanism. The whole point of having the blade at 90 degrees to to keep the locking mechanism from breaking so it will continue to work as it should.

Well heck I didn’t know the blade lock release was the emblem .. I was actually disappointed with the fact I had to carefully move the lock with a finger nail .. that one time in life I should have actually read the directions !😂. Thanks for the info!

I also carry the 78 in red. 👍👍. Very comfortable in my hand and looks unobtrusive. I use the Victorinox sheath as I hate carrying gear in my pockets.

👍 Nice review. Funny that the OD Green version costs so much more than the Red version as a Red version would be so much more desirable. I use the Victorinox Ranger which is a very similar knife with a corkscrew and agree these 111mm SAK knives are very good. I squared off the front section of the bottle top lifter on mine to use it as a ferro rod striker.

Hey there...save your knife and don't baton with the blade locked out..you'll destroy the joint and locking mechanism...if you need to baton with it, keep it at a 90° Angle.... Nice short video btw 👍

Yeah, that's why I held the blade at the locking mechanism. But this isn't a technique I would use or practice on the regular. Thanks for heads up tho!

Love that knife! I did a review on my 78. I prefer the screw drive than the cork screw the 79 has. The 78 has been clutch for me many times. Nice review you did here, great vid!

I think the branch you 1st cut with the saw is called Beenatree. It's Beenatree for years, then it falls on the ground...then it's just a stick🤣 👍 Cheers from Oz 🇦🇺

Geez I just bought this knife, had to order the red version with green scales. Paid $90 from Switzerland. Edit: Probably would of saved a few dollars with the pathfinder. Plus I’d rather support them. Also had to deal with the slight hassle changing the scales myself.

I have looked a few times at SRO but they always seemed to be out of stock, so I settled for the red version. I also have a Swiss Champ and a Leatherman Rebar. The tip of the Leatherman's awl broke the first time I used it. I like your videos, thanks for sharing.

Actually victorinox offers handle scale replacements, even when you order it you can order some extra scales and ask them to change them for you before shipping I personally never done it because i dont own that many SAK and the ones i do own i love the way they are (Winter edition pioneer, rangerwood 55, customized swiss champ)

Hey Paul good down and dirty review. I've been using the 78 everyday for 2 years. I agree a locking saw blade would have been a better feature. Overall I'm content with it. The huntsman is my other SAK. Still going strong, seems like forever. Thanks.

I carry a Fallkniven R2 Scout or a Bradford Guardian G3 in conjunction with my Rangergrip 78. Both can easily baton through anything that I can saw through with the Rangergrip and create feathers like a champ. If cost is a concern then a much cheaper but still very effective option is the Mora Robust Pro or the Cold Steel Finn Hawk.

Just bought a Rangergrip 178 in the green/black just like this one from the Victorinox website for 85 bucks. I needed to add a serrated blade to my collection. I’d like to see them add a metal file to this lineup and the locking saw.

Another great video! I carry the Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger Pocket knife. I like it much better than the Ranger 78. I hope you take a look at the Army Ranger Pocket and do a review on it. Your skilled opinion would be very valuable. I like it due to the size is smaller, less weight, and has more useful survival tools than the Ranger 78. Just MHO!

They should change the saw on it for one profiled like the Victorinox Field Master or OHT. There is too much metal behind the teeth, and it is my experience that it takes noticeably more effort to use.

You are too young to know lol A cap lifter is a bottle cap opener like what use to be on soda bottles & beer bottles. Occasionally beer bottles still have the old caps (non-twist off). If you’re doing a video you should research all the tools first. 😂
