I had both amp as well. I sold the DR. I swapped the Creamback M to a V-Type on my V40 and loved it even more.

I have owned many amps Vox - Marshall - Peavey - Blackstar - and then bought a V40 deluxe for my gigs. Its not cheap but its the best amp i ever played and owned - its great if using pedals with it - for me nothing else will do - just love the tone depths and the built in trem and reverb.

V40 all the way. Mids are just more present. Deluxe sounds great, but the V40 would cut through a mix better. Just my 2p.

Cool vid! I wonder how they would compare with the same speaker. I've read teh ceramic is quite different than the std speaker. That said, 68dr didn't sound bad until you switched to the v40d which sounds outstanding!

Hi. And thanks. To be fair, in this video I had the V40 dialled in to get as close in tone to the Fender 68DR as possible, but I don't think that is the V40's sweet spot. After gigging with it a bunch of times I found myself running it cleaner and driving it with pedals and it seemed to sound better that way. Ended up using with Mid Kick off - Voice 1 - Bass 25% Mid 50% Treb 75% - Volume 50% and Master Volume to taste. I find this amp doesn't really have much range in adjustment and just kind sounds how it sounds tho.

I had a '68CDR for four years prior to buying a V40D. I bought the V40D used at a great price (less than a new '68CDR). After playing both amps side-by-side thoroughly using both of the V40D's power settings, I felt the V40D overall sounded better. After gigging both, I noticed by itself (without pedals), the V40D is slightly darker than the '68CDR, but richer in harmonic content with a "thicker" overall tone. In addition, the Fender's reverb is somewhat more splashy (which could be good, or bad). The V40D was much quieter as well. It wasn't long after comparing the two, I sold the '68CDR. That is not to say the '68CDR is a bad amp, but I much prefer the Victory.

Perfect assessment right there. Did my first show with the V40 last night and i couldn’t have put it better myself than what you’ve said here. It’s nice when you find something better than the already fantastic thing you were using.

Hey man, thank you for your great video. Very valuable for me. I‘m on the quest for replacing my beloved but often cumbersome Super Reverb… have you had the chance to check out the V140 also? They say it’s even more true to that Blackface tone and might be exactly what I‘m looking for. I mainly use it for SRV style tones and funk. Thanks man

I’m here checking these out as out of my amp collection my two favourite amps are - my Super Reverb and my JTM-45 (running KT66’s, 4x12 loaded with 2x G12 Vintage and 2x old greenbacks). Something in that realm (V40 Deluxe) as a head would be awesome. Looking at the layout of the V40 it’s got a 12at7 reverb driver and a 12at7 phase inverter. That’s more black face than the fender reissue’s are. Running two extra 6L6’s is not going to make it “more” black face, it’s more like having the headroom of a Twin vs the lower headroom of the Super.

I have a V40 Deluxe head that I am using with a Zilla cab loaded with a Alnico Cream. The main difference in the sound between your amps could be the different speakers or the 6V6 vs 6L6 power tubes? My V40D reminds me of a 1964 Bassman head I had years ago that also had 6L6 tubes although the V40D has much more gain and many other features. I prefer the V40D’s sound on this video.

V 40 !it has that bassman plexi sound it does sound, rounder and wider but still does that fender chime-y clean bell sound!more hendrix like!the Fender is too thin and harsh and I think I know the sound you're going for with your style!

Man what tone with victory. I have the same amp but i cannot get that much gain. Did you have it on Voice 2? Did you use any pedal in front of it? Thanks.

Yeah no pedals. Yeah think I was using voice 2 on this to get it to sound more like the 68DR. Pickups make a difference. Using Bareknuckle Irish Tours in the Strat in this video. Hotter than a regular single coil. They really got me the Strat tone I was after with any amp.

I prefer the Victory. There's a little more, in that it sounds cleaner, more powerful, thicker in the lower mids, and maybe better bass. Maybe the Fender has a bit more definition, but not necessarily sounding better for it. I wonder if . As for what you were asking about how one can sound louder, the ear is much more sensitive to mid-range. So, amps like the Victory, and Marshalls say, tend to sound louder, than sparkly amps like the Deluxe. It's also I guess that loudness curve thing where something with more bass will tend to sound bigger, and so louder. And the Victory definitely has a lot more bass. But not too much, it's just when you go back to the V40, it sounds a bit anemic compared to V40.

Its hard to unknow or unhear an amp you love. I love the fender twin, but its not a fit for hauling or gigging. I do more Sonic Youth and Alt / Noise Rock. Id love to go light and reasonable with a device like the victory v4 pedal/amp, but how the heck do I get feedback and play with it through a piece of kit just going to a PA or something like a PA? So, Ive been considering just buying a fender deluxe. Are you taking the Victory out and enjoying?

Played my last 6 shows with it. Tone wise in a full live set up I don't think it quite matches the DR. Just seems a little darker and spongier, but not much. The reason I keep going with it is how controllable the feedback is. And having the master volume is a major plus. Can dial in just the right volume for the venue and use the preamp volume to dial in the gain. Just a better all rounder. But there is still something special about the tone of the DR that it can't match at gig volumes.

@@DogsharkGPS What attenuator did you put on the DR? I have an ac30 and been using an ironman 2 100 watt piece of kit. The ironman is a tank. So, Im not thrilled about lugging th ac30 and the iron man around. Ive thought about putting some big industrial locking wheels on at least the backside of the amp and then use a dolly handle or something modded to be on the amps back I can tilt and roll. Still no good for places with steps, which most have at least a few.

Zilla Cabs did a shootout of all the Celestion Creamback speakers and the Neo was lacking some of the character of the other Creambacks. Both speakers do have the same rating of 97db so the efficiency should be the same. The only reason I can see for the Fender having higher readings on your DAW while not being as loud could be mic placement and or cabinet design?

The Victory has a tilted speaker angle…you will indeed hear it better at those angles.

for me , the victory, i had a deluxe 68 custom and sent it back , the noise off it was ungodly

That’s not uncommon. I got in with the noise ok. It’s a trade off for the godly tone. But the V40 just does it for me.

for €1350 it should be pefect, no hiss, so dodgy tubes, no loose fittings etc.or cheap parts, thats why i sent it back, you couldn't use it in a home studio because the hiss was unbearable with nothing plugged into it, i think id prefer an fm3 11 or a kemper.

I understand that you get used to the way an amp sounds especially if it's pretty much all you play, but what I'm hearing is the Victory sounding fuller and richer. The deluxe sounds thin compared to the Victory. Any doubts were confirmed when you threw drive at em. Victory by a mile. Trust me you're going to hear it when you get away from the deluxe for a couple days.

Not so much if you buy used. I only paid £200 more for the V40 than I paid for the DR.

Please stop recording your $4000 music gear with your built-in phone microphone. There is absolutely NOTHING we can tell from this, it's compressed to death, tiny crappy mic, completely worthless. Surely, if you can afford this music gear, you could get a used SM57 for 50 bucks and a cheap interface for your computer, or any cheap digital recorder.
