+B. Jones From the owners words...Funny thing, on that pass against the Shelby I sheared the cogs off the blower belt after the wheelie and that is why the car slowed so much on the big end...He must have lost his concentration when I wheelied and that caused him to lose focus

Very cool! I like the fact it still looks and sounds somewhat like a smart car. Sure its an easy wheel stander with the rear engine layout. Nice sleeper. I went to the opposite end of the scale with a 12 second full size 4wd expedition but it certainly will not be doing any wheelstands anytime soon. lol.

I think the point was in the first 1/4 mile race, the smart car pulled an awesome wheelie. In the second race, the smart car got 12. 53 and the Mustang got 13.32 or low 13's. If the Smart car hadn't pulled such a wheelie in the first race, and slowed down to bring the front end back down, it would have won too.

businessnik What the ET and MPH tells me is the Mustangs had no traction and poor shifting (by sound of it), but much better HP to weight (high MPH, poor ET). The Smart had great traction, but minimal power (poor MPH). The Mustang run looks like my 60 year old wife was driving.

In Manhattan where I run my business, "NY Plantings" I think of a fleet of these cars as NYC garden service vehicles. Now after seeing this I'm sold on the idea. Wheelies! We have an '03 lightning as work truck with over 200K miles that is excellent and a c5 vette, but I'm always jealous when I see some 'smart' ass fitting their car into a Manhattan parking space that no one else would dream of trying! Brian Filholm Yeah, I suspect that's a replica GT500. The shifts aren't that aggressive, and the only way you run a 13.9 in a GT500 is to way overcook the launch and spin the tires. Seems like a GT or even V6 dressed up like a Shelby. Still, props to the smart for running a 13 AFTER a wheelie, hah. Awesome stuff.

Also that is an older Mustang in the second video. That Smart car is fab but the title of the video is wrong "Smartcar outruns an older Mustang on the second attempt" might be a better title

power to weight ratio counts. mustang weighs around 1.8 tons with around 600 bhp that smart car has about 300bhp and weighs under 500kilos ((1/2 ton)) so 4 smart cars = 2 tons 4 x 300bhp = 1200 bhp sooo yeah smart car will beat it. shame theres no wheelie bar

If mustangs are so slow why are people always trying to beat them and posting ridiculous videos claiming to beat them. A modified version of any vehicle takes all equation outside of the box of it my modifed 2001 gt smokes a lot of shit challengers chargers vettes etc. I also have a shit load of money in mind to make it fast but I can't claim that every 2001 is superior off of what mine does because mine isn't stock. Stock v stock a lot of shit is different with different outcomes.

I am curious how this happened. Props to the dude who modded a smart car as that is awesome!:-)....but a 2011 GT500 has a stock 1/4 mile time of 12.35, so why did he go more than a second slower? A GT500 owner that wants to drag, would hopefully at least retune to reclaim the 30+hp that they suffocate for EPA. He should have easily done 12 seconds flat.

Actually YOU don't know what you're talking about RussianGoldKing... For every 100lbs it is normally a .1 of a second depending on the weight of the car and power. For the2013 GT500 with 662hp and 3850lbs weight(lets say 4100-4200 lbs with both guys in it), an extra 200lbs is almost nothing... That car should have still run 11.9-12.4 @ 120+mph depending on the launch(and the car was on Drag radials or slicks so should have launched harder, you can see different wheels on the rear) LMAO... You need to get to the drag strip, and not comment on these vids until you do... My guess is the GT500 driver was trying to be "cute" against the smart car and started in 3rd or is a really bad driver...

Any small light car would beat a heavier car off the line, regardless if it was a Ford, Chevy or Dodge. You'd get the same results if it was a Corvette, Camaro or a Challenger, hell the smart car would probably beat the Challenger full distance because their weight. Mustang GT is 3,705 pounds - just three pounds heavier than the lightest Camaro V6. The eight-cylinder Chevy comes in at 3,908 pounds, which is still lighter than the Challenger's weight of 4,082 pounds. The stock smart car is 1600 lbs...
