Fantastic video again Nev, wishing you and the EK team a very Happy New Year. One question regards dual controls, I'm of the understanding that they were original to the design rather than a mod. Bomber Command had co-pilots up to a certain point in 1942, and all the heavy bombers such as the Halifax and the Manchester had to have dual controls included. You'll nearly always see dual controls in any Manchester cockpit shots, and this was obviously carried over into the Lancaster, although usually removed on front line aircraft when co pilot position was made redundant in 42. This is my understanding of the history, perhaps you could ask the guys at the centre next time for some details on this to confirm?? Anyway,fantastic vid as always.
@nevillewheeldon16936 ай бұрын
Hi RCR1, I believe the removable controls for the co pilot were stored in the nose of the Lancaster but will check. I hope to record this question and answer on video

Another outstanding video Neville. Thank you for all your wonderful work, and all the best for 2024. One question, I presume when NX611 returns to flight, she'll be dual control-two pilot, or will she be the only single pilot flying Lanc?

@10:30 he is explaining the use of an ice pick to line up the holes in the skin with the rib. I have a whole box of ice picks for this very same purpose. I have to explain to new fitters that a company here in the US still supplies brand new ice picks. I find it ironic that I haven’t seen someone use an ice pick to chip an ice block in over 60 years.
@samwestwell59826 ай бұрын
In the old days all the fitters had podgers which were similar and were made locally as times were hard and we couldn’t afford luxuries and a lot of panels were made without jigs so they were all slightly different so taking them off and refitting during maintenance was a work of art made possible by the Podger and expletives.
@nevillewheeldon16936 ай бұрын
Hi Rex, it putt to good use the ice pick

At 9:41 Jacob is showing his work on the wing and there is evidence of rippling of the metal when it was heaved into place. Will this be left as it is and, if not how will it be smoothed out?

Not sure on that one , Keith will be able to tell him the correct way of riveting the ripple out.

1 question. Wouldn't it be easier to all the wiring at the back of the instrument panel while the nose is of?
@nevillewheeldon16936 ай бұрын
The center section of the fuselage will be last to be made airworthy, all the wiring loom will be done then.
@stephenhobbs10526 ай бұрын
They must have used a cockpit section with the nose removed, to film the cockpit flying sequences of The Dambusters? Does anyone at the center know anything about this? There would have been a few aircraft around to break up for filming purposes, rather than build a set.
@timorvet16 ай бұрын
From my Book "Filming the Dambusters" by Jonathan Falconer 2005. A complete Lancaster cockpit section (minus nose section) was mounted on a pivoting platform, technician Harold Payne devised the machinery that replicated the movements of an aircraft in flight in the studio. The cockpit controls were linked to a motor beneath the platform to create what was in essence a simple flight simulator. When the control column was moved the platform moved too., thereby creating a realistic flying movement of the aircraft nose section when viewed later on screen. Actor Richard Todd who played Gibson spent hours in the nose section filming scenes until the director was happy with the final result. Between takes Todd was even taught how to fly the platform correctly by an RAF instructor and how to operate a Lancaster up to take off speed. For filming of ground scenes with a complete aircraft they used a "pantechnicon" (a large van for transporting furniture) which doubled as a camera platform with tripod mounted cameras mounted on top for filming close up scenes of the cockpit during engine start up and close down procedures. Just a little movie trivia I thought Id throw in from a great classic film. Cheers.

The pin is only good for ground taxiing! It's not air-worthy otherwise? Surely the only time the pin is being used is when the aircraft is on the ground and the plane is taxiing around? Admittedly the last bit of "taxiing" would be done at speed i.e. going down the runway before taking off, but it's still on the ground and not in the air?
@BradleyWinder966 ай бұрын
True however the pin would be carrying much higher loads and stresses if the aircraft was flying (specifically during landings) and although the current pins would ‘probably’ be ok, new, unblemished pins would almost ‘certainly’ be ok. That’s the main difference between ground use and airworthy components.
