You killed this topic better than anyone I've ever seen talk about the subject. I'm elated your gave that paper example it was absolutely perfect... I was podcasting back in 2005 and I tried explaining codecs back then just as you did and I didn't do it the same justice that you just provided. I absolutely love your explanation, I will definitely use this to explain to folks in future. Also your story about the Paintball company was magnificent. Anyway you won me over I'm gonna subscribe and check out your info superb job. - bendrix

I so much like the crumpling paper analogy. The more compress the file (more your crumple the paper) the less data it retain.

Thanks for the very clear explanation. Working with Premiere Pro from a Fujifilm X-T3, I need everything in ProRes or Premiere basically collapses into a heap on the floor and gives up. My solution is to record to an Atomos Ninja V. Loving the flog files it produces, and they're waaay easier to work with in Premiere.

FYI, KZfaq accepts ProRes. Fun fact, every single time it's time to upload to KZfaq, I say "lemme upload a prores 422", get impatient with the upload time, then get an H264 and throw it onto KZfaq. In theory, uploading a prores to KZfaq will be better (one less compression round) but I've never actually have been patient enough to upload a prores.
@OnlyThomasHayes2 жыл бұрын
My first several KZfaq videos were all ProRes because I didn't understand codecs. It took SO LONG to upload videos and it was exhausting. I'm glad I understand the use of H.264 now 🙏🏾 Also, I uploaded the same clip to test the difference between ProRes and H.264 on KZfaq and couldn't tell a difference.

This is great information. A lot of times professors just tell you either h.264 or pick the preset on premiere / your editing software.
@usmanmajid78373 жыл бұрын
Great explanation Josh, thanks! I'm new to ProRes, but since my R6 10-bit 4:2:2 H.265 footage is EATING my computer alive, I've began researching ProRes as an intermediary codec, i.e. I'm converting my files before I import into Premiere. Question: what's better to use, the ProRes 422 LT, or the HQ version. Does it make much difference to the quality? Also, would you suggest using ProRes as an intermediary codec, or using proxies in my case?
@YonnBurgos2 жыл бұрын
Very good explanation buddy! P.S. When you started to use the analogy for the paper, I though you were going to say something about printing in color using good quality of paper versus regular paper for text print out. hahahaha :)

Relearning Prores again and this makes sense! Quick question on your video editing process.. Do you create proxies for your Prores files when editing in premier pro?
@jaymanuel872 жыл бұрын
Great video, I knew most of the information but this helps me explain to other people what is the difference. One question, if I want my editor to edit but I want to color the file, could he export in ProRes 422 and send to me? Would that be enough information for me to color edit? Thanks for the help

I just subscribed. I love making videos and I use Corel VSP 2020 AS MY EDITOR. My camera does shoot in h264 What program would you recommend buying unless there's a free version to convert my video to Prores ? Basically so it's easier editing in my computer. Thanks Keith
@bloopbloopy28933 жыл бұрын
thanks a lot man! I've been exporting my selected scenes in h.264 and then importing them into ae and expoting them again and i had no idea why the quality was going down untill now.
@mOo843 жыл бұрын
If I am often importing sections of older videos I have produced into new edits (b-roll etc) - would there would be a noticeable quality difference between a high bitrate H264 export and a PRORES one? 90% of the time I am only exporting videos for social media platforms / KZfaq.

Thank you for your explanation Josh, my question, if possible. If I shoot and have mp4 and H.264. Should I render it as H.264 for KZfaq or it is better to render as DNxHR and upload it on KZfaq as mov DNxHR HQ. 5 min clip takes only 10 min to upload. Will I have better quality? It looks like I loose quality on the post if I work with H.264 and render it as H.264 on KZfaq. Thanks
@maxlindgren74782 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great explanation! So, what happens if I put h.264 avc stock footage in my video and then export it as h.264? Will that lower the quality of the stock footage?
