The song is actually about going through something traumatic and the “rain” is your tears, hence the line “i’d rather be dry but at least i’m alive.” Ariana did call out Lady Gaga for not trying to be friends with her, and lady gaga was “hiding” from ariana bc she didn’t want to project her trauma onto her! I think the end shot of them hugging was just to show that trauma can bring people together to make great friendships!

Ariana’s and Gaga’s location are the same to act like mirror. When they flip they don’t go just from light to dark outfit. Ariana appears with her hair loose and gaga with ari’s ponytail. Their makeup also switch. It’s two generations of pop, connecting and complementing each other. It’s ari going into gaga’s world and vice versa.

That’s the point of it. I think Gaga don’t wanna end the video with her being in tear/rain/ pain. But end with the happy note as “at least I’m alive” so jus have to still living and try to be happy and dance along with the pain.

I love the final shot of them hugging - it’s cute. There are several shots throughout the video of her getting rained on so having it end like that wouldn’t have been that impactful. Unless it was literally the ONLY shot in the video then yeah, it would’ve been a good ending.

The thing with Gaga is that it’s all about the dancing, her top singles come with a choreography. I remember 10 years ago when I was in highschool we used to dance the bad romance choreography at the gay club we used to go (they usually don’t ask for ID) Also, her choreographies are quite popular among dancers The close up are because Ariana grande claims that she can’t dance

The song - according to Gaga, is about embracing sadness and allowing yourself to cry when you need to release it, even though we'd all rather be "dry" - AKA not crying & happy. The shot of them embracing and smiling at the end is conveying 2 things. The first is that you can make it through the tough, sad times and come out happy. The second thing is simply the fact that Gaga and Ariana are genuinely friends and love one another, and didn't make this song just for commercial success like some other duets (especially ones with featured rappers.)

I think the reason why they didn't put Ariana Grande on a completely different location was to match Lady Gaga's shot as reflection. At least they changed the color scheme and grading to differentiate the two. But yeah, I agree that the last shot feels kinda off. Maybe there's like a meaning to it?

Ken Phan (it was all 22 on the 22nd actually.) but you are correct about the part where it’s paying tribute. the video came out on the anniversary of the bombing. the song is a celebration of tears and all of the hard things ari and gaga have gone through!

It's a nod to the Manchester people, who have the symbol of a bee (I'm fairly sure), and it's meant to signify that she always keeps the trauma and the people close to her after the terrorist attack at her concert in Manchester, in which some of her fans were killed.

I think the last scene is iconic but i agree it does feel like a label thing to include those two smiling at the end, from a story perspective it showed how they made it through the rain. But also if you look at Lady Gaga's Judas ending and Alejandro, it had that shock factor as the end scene.

Having similar locations in both Gaga and Ari's shots was intentional. Gaga performed at a stadium where she broke her hip, which massively affected her since then, and Ariana's homage to Manchester bombing incident during her concert. Nevertheless, great review! That "It's a knife clip" was perfect! Thanks for the backstory about the rain/pain being related to a friend Gaga had hurt. If you look at that clip where everyone is dancing beneath Gaga you can see that the rain is falling from her eyes which could suggest that she was the one who had caused that rain/pain that then affected the "mortals" below. I also agree that ending on the shot of her would have more dramatic effect but ending with the two embracing as friends to me symbolizes the repair of the relationship and overcoming the rain.

I feel the same way, they should have ended the mv at lady gaga not hugging. It seem like a strong powerful song. Individually both of the singers presents power and passion. We can already feel their presents together. There were no need to visualize it afterwards. But they choose it put in. It reminds me of britney's stronger. That song was cure in my depression. So many things about it made me feel stronger specially the last scene where she choose to smile and the close up.

There are so many subliminal messages in this video. Your review of the editing process is always spot on but the comments on the content and meaning behind it kinda fell flat. The knife in her leg for instance. She suffers from Fibromyalgia and her left hip is where she suffers the most with it. So the knife symbolises that. The changes of scenes or lack of as you mentioned. Did you not notice the lighting changes. Gaga has dark themes and Ariana has light. The transition is passing through a reflection such as a puddle of water. On the surface it can be rough but beneath is still calm. The rain itself, it represents trauma and negativity but they’re portraying that it is only in the surface and cannot harm the inner self and happiness that is there. Also how can you not know who Robert Rodriguez is! Grindhouse, Deathproof, planet Terror, Sin City, From Dusk til Dawn, predators

11:17 the difference between being a stan and not. ari is my favorite person in the world and that last scene w them smiling is my favorite moment in the whole video. i actually tear up when i see it. i really believe that last shot was for us stans, seeing them being happy is our happiness and knowing what ari has been through these last years, nothing makes me happier than seeing her genuinely happy. this is just my opinion though, but i think a lot of stans really appreciated that last shot.

Jordan! In your video, on the 3:57 it's where we can see the first shot of Ariana! She is in the water reflection of the ground dancing the same of Gaga before the transition!! I don't know why nobody see her! Hahahaha! You said in 6:15 that you don't like that first shot of Ariana but, that's not the first shot of her! Hahahaha! Read me pleaseee! Love your work man!
