The water is rough with high winds. If the ship lost power 🔋 like some are saying,it drifted into the column unintentionally. The pilot probably knew what was coming and couldn't do anything about it.

I believe the context of the 1-3 hours was “before freezing to death.” At the time they were commenting very clearly on the temperature of the water as a major factor for any potential survivors being found. That would mostly apply to people who made it to the water’s surface or managed to climb out of the water into one of the remaining structures. Underwater the bigger factor would be air. Assuming somebody had sufficient air supply, then the temperature factor would come back into play.

@@STSauto yes so!! Once ships hit the channel they are order to turn off the engines and the tugs meet the Vessels at least 3 miles before it actually hit the channel. Where I’m @ in New Jersey we have a similar set up where ships cross our bridge to get to the piers!!!! which is called the Bayonne bridge! Tugs guide the vessels Right to the dock! After that the ship gets tied up

I doubt they will find him guilty of anything. The ship lost power when it was in a turn heading for the exit. When the power came back on, the engine started belching black smoke. The ship started drifting sideways, they dropped anchor to try to stop, but the anchor dragged. It looked like they couldn't regain control and the current + the momentum carried them into the bridge.

The ship was cutting a Uturn headed out. Power went out on the ship and huge plume of BLACK SMOKE started to come out of the engine room. When power fails, so does steering. He dropped his anchors, he did all he could.

At the start of the clip it was actually in the channel fine when it lost power. It drifted straight, it then restarted the engine which looked sick. Ive seen a few captains chime in, seems like the consencus with them is that the pilot put the ship into reverse to ring it to a stop with the engine dying, the prop spin combined with wind swung the bow around and the engine died again before they could fully stop the ship. The sad truth is, if thats what happened, it was the act of trying to stop the ship that doomed the bridge and if they hadnt restored power, we would be talking aout a ship striking fort carroll and getting stuck

The Dali is not a particular large container ship, its a very common post panamax class ... a 300m size which is around since the mid 90s. The real issue in this case is that the US simply has outdated infrastructure which for decades hasnt kept up with modern standards and requirements ... like protection of bridge pillars able to withstand/deflect such a common ship type, which does exist for ages. Blame the greed of the US when it comes to infrastructure investments, these ships are not the problem and that disaster could have easily been avoided by keeping up with standards for safety of bridges.

The ship would have been piloted by a specialist on the river. So intentional is very unlikely. However, a ton of non-intentional things, like mechanical issues, could have caused a loss of control.
