If a doctor intentionally did something that hurt a patient or a banker was stealing funds, they'd be gone regardless of retirement. Getting a DUI usually statistically means he's been doing it quite a bit. It's also unlikely their first time breaking the law and sweeping it under the rug.

No need to wonder, the video showed you. Drunk chief gets driven home by sober chief, and they have "a long talk" on the way home. Without cameras, drunk chief likely gets to "sleep it off", or just gets a ride home from the first officer. If anything, this shows why plenty of cops were resistant to body cams. When they can just say "nothing happened", and that is the end of it, that is one thing. When they have to actually delete evidence, that is another. Body cams are a god-send to honest cops, as they document everything, but they are the enemy of cops that do not want everything documented. A cop that does not want everything documented, automatically deserves everything they have done looked into.

The Sgt. asked: "Is it all on the dash cam?...This is a tough day and age...all these electronic things, and technology." Had the other cop said no, (not recorded on the dash cam) and no evidence from the body cams I am sure the Sgt. would've let the chief off the hook without having the other corrupt chief of police intervene. They want other people to obey the laws, but the same laws don't apply to them. This is why I have zero respect for most cops.

While I did too, I remember when we were in our teens, breaking small traffic rules and somebody in the car had illicit drugs on them, cops would let them go and made sure everyone made it home safe (confiscated goods of course). So yes, cams are great for both sides if something goes south. But everyone looked out for each other then. Now with cams everyone is obligated to arrest/sue without thought of consequence. This guy should have been cited or arrested either way though.

Oh wow, that sure was sly! The look on the county chiefs face, totally looked like he knew he was breaking the law too. I support good police and I’m sure there’s degrees and not all sins are created equal. That said I imagine it’s pretty common for officers not to follow to the letter like what’s expected of civilians. I’m also a big believer in discernment and I’ve definitely been given chances in the past. I understand people drive after drinking, everybody has done it. We didn’t have Uber in my formative partying years. Problem is, some of these Uber rides are $20, and that’s 5 drinks. A lot of money to poor college kids that just wanna have fun. I live in a town where to DWI busts are so popular that at least a dozen police cars do circles like sharks around the square for 4 hours straight around closing time. When I was younger I had a self destructive relationship end, drove through the square pulled over drunk, and the officer let me go with a worming. I’ll never forget it. I don’t know if I agree with it, but I was grateful nonetheless. I immediately parked and told my friends we had to walk a few miles to the party, I came to my senses and didn’t want to press my luck. Anyway I have some empathy because of that!

I worked at one of the largest police departments in America. This sort of thing never would have happened there. We arrested multiple officers and high ranking public officials for DUI/DWI, family violence, etc. No one got a pass in our department.

Basically he's saying because of all the cameras I can't tell you to let him go without having someone here with more pull to make that call. Otherwise I would have told you over the phone to let him go and I would chew you out tomorrow for even suggesting arresting a police chief..

I asked somebody that followed this case, so whatever happened to that please chief, Hall from missouri? It was internally investigated and the police chief was put on informal probation. Never lost a day of work was never actually formally charged in the courts.

Police Station....arrested me blow the breathalyzer ......Again....then realizing that I'm not screwed up and at the lowest level of any kind of registration.... they said you can go..... and when I got to the door ....they said Stop ! come back here ....hold on we got to give you some tickets.......and they gave me like eight tickets which is ridiculous and everything got thrown out of court except DWI...... unfair

The sergeant who let him off retired a week later. The Hazelwood chief was never charged and is still working towards his retirement and full pension. Nothing was investigated.

Exactly. In one aspect I feel like he's trying to be understanding of the "older days" or whatever and that this was the norm.... but that doesn't make it the slightest bit less illegal. And officers having a problem being recorded and held accountable like this sergeant should be fired on the spot. Like seriously, no questions asked. That is a major problems cops are facing these days when they turn in a "bad cop". They end up on a call and literally nobody will come to cover them, hoping they get killed on the call. Nothing about the US police is "OKAY" or constitutional, but somehow we allow them

@@babebell357 This. That's exactly what they did, they turned off their body cams, conducted an incomplete field test, gave him a ride home and zero charges for driving completely wasted. Your average citizen would have been arrested, charged with a misdemeanor and have to pay a huge fine.

Police are civilian, they just dress up like they are in the army.

I'm not in law enforcement but I guess for an officer if he ends up ending the career of another officer or arresting another officer then it essentially kills his/her own chance of promotion or career progression and could lead to fellow officers not having their back in a life and death situation, I expect that is what an officer might put forward as rationale, even though I personally don't agree with that rationale

How could you not understand the "comradery" as they call it, and the taboo nature of subjecting one of your own to your police procedure. Once you've arrested one of your "own", you can jeopardize your whole career and put a huge target on your back. It's like not snitching in prison I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying it's not very hard to understand.

us vs them mentality. we saw this recently in Austin TX where it was revealed cadets are explicitly taught "to think of the public as cockroaches they are at war with."

Because cops value the lives of their comrades over the life's of civilians they swore to protect. Look at uvalde TX situation. They put their lives over classroom full of children. Look at the recent situation with the shooter in the mall. The security guard was telling the cop what was going on and the cop wanted to wait for back up until the security guard said that the cop inside the mall was the one who got shot. Only then the cop run in to do try and take the assailant. Cops are taught from day 1 to back the blue over everything and everyone first.

The rumor got out and media requested the body cam footage. That prompted both Police Chiefs to retire. I agree the FBI should have been called.

That Chief didn't care, he was less than 30 days from retirement. He knew he would be gone if this surfaced.

He was charged with the DUI, just not arrested and transported to the station. Police officers can actually do that at their discretion. They can issue an OTA (order to appear), although not a common practice, but in some misdemeanor cases, you can actually do that. That’s why the police officer’s chief told him to do what he has to do. I am not trying to defend anyone here, but what the officers did was totally legal.

How many people has the Chief put away in his career for doing the exact same thing? But then when he does it... "well we'll just use our own discretion."

The patrol officer and the sergeant both did their jobs, and the sergeant was willing to back up the officer's choice to arrest. They were both obviously very concerned about the politics and optics of the situation, and both knew the right course of action, but they put the decision on their own chief, so that either way that it played out, they were following their chain of command's decision. The two chiefs are the two responsible for this double standard. On the plus side, the younger officer was obviously uncomfortable with letting the chief go, and I hope that's a sign of the trend of some of this "good ol' boy" cronyism being on its way out. The sergeant sort of lamented that dash cams and body cams were making it more difficult to let fellow cops off for crimes you caught them committing. Hopefully newer cops are coming up in an environment where accountability is the norm rather than the exception, but there are a lot of old school cops out there who will still be serving for at least another two or three decades.

Well the young cop will lose his job if he doesn't follow the pecking order. His boss will find away to get him fired.

Yeah, he was TOO nice to the guy.
