That's ridiculous. You have to remember, Lenny was kinda holding George back. Sure, they got to pool money, but it was only gonna take a month. Give them 3 months and I can't see why they couldn't make it.

“‘I’ll work my month an’ I’ll take my fifty bucks an’ I’ll stay all night in some lousy cat house. Or I’ll set in some poolroom till ever’body goes home. An’ then I’ll come back an’ work another month an’ I’ll have fifty bucks more’” (Steinbeck 95).
@fishlordusername891
@fishlordusername891 5 жыл бұрын
This is months old but it helps me practicepp for the exam so :/. no matter how much Lenny held him back, the main reason George even wanted that farm was because of Lenny. George is a fairly average person, and his friendship with Lenny in a world of migrant workers where everyone is lonely and such close friendships were rare is the only thing that made him worth something and prevent him from completely being hopeless. the kind of childish naivety in a depressing adult world that Lenny had and the constant repetition of the dream made him actually believe it and work towards something. That childish naivety is however what brings Lenny's downfall in the novel, as if he was capable of understanding the seriousness of his situation with Curley's wife, she probably wouldn't have died. This is Steinbeck's main argument in the book - that happiness can be achieved through friendship, but cannot be achieved in a world as cruel as the one itinerant workers had. At the same time, being blinded by a dream and child naivety is also wrong and brings to destruction. The american dream is long dead.

George killed Lennie because he knew if Lennie was found by Curley and his posse, what they did to him would be much worse than what George did, in essence, saving Lennie from a crueler fate.

+Payton Newman The hallucination scene at the end demonstrates that Lennie remembered all the things that George told him not to do, and all the wrongs he had done that he claimed and pretended he had forgotten. Then he ignores his aunt telling him about George and talks to an imaginary rabbit instead, demonstrating that he doesn't care about George, and is only pursuing his dream of tending to the rabbits, using George as a means to reach his own goal, and in the process, destroying George's dream. All in all, Lennie is the selfish one in the story, and George is the one who has to kill his only friend, and has his dream destroyed. pretty much just copied that from my hw xD

A important part is that candy said he shouldn't have let them shoot his dog. He should have done it himself. Kinda putting George in the perspective that if Lenny will be killed it shouldn't be by a stranger but someone that cares for him. Someone he loves and trust near by and not surrounded by anger and fear. I honestly find this book so emotional and suggest you read it instead of spark notes. I seriously cried reading this book

I graduated high school just before the boom of the internet. If you wanted Cliff Notes, you had to actual go and purchase the physical notes. Since I barely had a job, let alone a license, it was easier and less expensive to just read the damn book assigned to us. I'm glad it played out this way, I wasn't at the time, but now I'm glad I actually read all of those books...in their entirety. I'm also glad I didn't have to deal with social media back then, but that's a whole other story that doesn't have Cliff Notes yet. Or maybe it does, idk.

I didn't read this book in school, it was in the 1960s, but I read it because I loved to read John Steinbeck's work. But when I saw the movie, it really shook me. It was a very hard life for migrant workers back then. The people who were displaced because of the dust bowl incident, must have been frightening to have to go somewhere else to make a new living. I was born and raised in California, and it was a very agricultural community where I was raised. The places that were mentioned in the book and movie were real places in California. It was very close to home.

After George about Lenny's crime, he knows that Lenny has become too much of a problem and prevents the pair to be truly happy in the lonely migrant worker community. His fateful decision is truly decided by his care for Lenny. George has been his guardian since Aunt Clara died and wants to protect him. He doesn't know how to protect Lenny at the end since the situation got way too out of hand. George felt that the best way to protect him was to shoot him. Lenny's death parallels Candy's dog.

Why did Lenny have to be killed? D: He was my favorite character... reminds me of the butterflies that keep coming to me when they are in pain ;-; you just have to let them be...

He had to die, if he wasn't killed he would either end up to one of 3 things. 1: Killed by Curley because of revenge for his dead wife. 2: Sent to an insane asylum because of his disability. 3: Sent to prison where he would die, from a sentence of "rape" and murder.

Also because they were gonna have to run away all the time and they wouldn't get anywhere in life. And back then if the cops ever got a hold of him they would've tortured him and George didn't want him to have to go thought that

The drama ramps up so quickly in the last third I got whiplash while reading. I see why schools choose it so often, it's relatively short but so full of character and themes to deconstruct in a class. I read it on my own time though, really enjoyed it

His reaction was more his way of dealing with the death of Lenny. Sure Lenny was borderline useless most of the time and was way more trouble than he was worth, but George still cared for him. Throughout the book George always dealt with things like it wasn't his problem and that it was being forced onto him by others. Him just saying "I killed Lenny; Lets go back" was him trying to say "I fixed the problem for you guys and forget it ever happened." was him trying to get away from what he did.

Yeah, I’m from Quebec and even though it’s been over-done in this comment section, I do actually have an exam about it tomorrow- I’m in secondary 5 (which is, according to Wikipedia, the equivalent of Première au lycée (?) (j’ai jamais compris l’affaire où vous comptez vos années d’école à l’envers (comme combien d’années il vous reste au lieu de ça fait combien d’années que vous étudiez-) en tous cas 🤷‍♂️) and we also read the French version~ That was all lol
