It is not just Dany and Drogo. George RR Martin did not portray any main character on screen rapes. The show added those for shock value. Jaime did not rape Cersei next to Joffrey's dead body in the Sept. And Sansa was not raped by Ramsay. Sansa wasn't even married to Ramsay. The one he did marry was a minor character and it was off screen.

Unfortunately sexual violence, parental verbal and physical abuse etc are very real human experiences, frequent human experiences. George depicts all of the sufferings that humans cause others. Sadly the show framed sexual violence as something that makes you stronger. George on the other hand? Dany is about to kill herself, Cersei is still haunted by Robert raping her and it strenghened her spite for the whole world... It was an clear attempt at getting insight into especially women's sufferings in a feudal patriarchy where they barely have a say in arranged marriages...

@@Fuzzysea693 I think every sa survivor has a different opinion on it and it's very valid that one does not want to see it, and I believe this is a situation where trigger warnings should be included in books/tv shows and movies. I just don't think that those themes should be cut out from fiction because some people find it triggering to watch or read about it (again this is totally valid to not want to). Getting beaten up is traumatic for someone out there, general domestic violence, verbal and physical, is real trauma people have, losing people to suicide etc etc If we wanna exclude SA from fiction then every other type of violence should be as well because they can be just as triggering for someone out there. I agree that authors need to be careful about not making it graphic so that it does not become p*rn*graphic though.
@Ashbrash1998
@Ashbrash1998 6 ай бұрын
In the books the handling of all the character's trauma is handled alot better. Like Dany after being with Drogo so young and etc is still coping with it and still has a complex view of their marriage of being sold to him but also that he gave her more freedom and independence. A reason why Cersei hates Robert so much is because he would assault and abuse her numerous times and when she called him out on it he blamed the alcohol and drank his wine (as well as thay he knocked Joffrey so hard after killing a cat that he knocked baby teeth out and even Stannis of all people thoufht he killed him). We see other characters also deal with being assaulted and the trauma from it and its never a "girl empowerment" thing.

In that world, it wouldn't be as traumatic. You'd have seen it around you all your life. It's more our sense of what is normal that defines what is abnormal. Like, countless arranged marriages throughout history. Obviously, there wouldn't be much love between them. And that was even the norm for kings - marrying off their kids for political reasons.

@@Leto2ndAtreidesPeople constantly minimise the suffering and trauma that people endured back in the days, but when we look at especially the art they created, their poems, paintings and letters you would know they grieved and suffered about the same things that we are grieving and suffering about. It was for example extremely common to have many many children and infant mortality and child death was frequent "normal". But guess what we know they were at least equally depressed and sad, they simply couldn't give in to their grief and focus on it full time because their survival instinct kicked in.

@@Crusher888 I personally think that the books are far better but there are things I recondise as superior in the show. One for example, being the dialogue back in the first seasons. They did a good job of taking what George wrote and tweaking it just enough to make it more snappy and better. Other is Jaime's encounter with Ned when they fight in the show. George's version is realistic and it is how it would have probably went down if it was real, but in this case I think the path of drama was better. And there are plenty of little changes like that, that are just better in general. Pretty much the show shines in areas where it actively tries to improve what is already in the books and craps its pants when it deviates from them. That is my overall opinion.

Whether mentally capable to understand what that means for them or not, biology doesn't care. Also, women today compared to women of 100-200+ years ago are effectively infants for much longer (men too). We have extended childhood in a dramatic fashion in the last 100-200 years.

Ok obviously nowadays that type of relationship would be fucked up. But in that universe, marrying underage people was common and apart of the culture. We can't say "x character committed a modern day crime" when that character is part of a universe where that isn't considered a crime. Like in some fantasy worlds, people could revenge kill other people and it wouldn't be a crime. If I killed someone out of revenge the cops aren't gonna give a shit and still try me as a murderer. It's ok if you personally don't like to see relationships like that, but to go as far as to call it rape cuz one character was too young according to our modern eyes is just annoying. Using that logic, there are so many other examples besides the murder one I gave that people should take issue with when dealing with fantasy. But I only ever hear people get upset over sexual stuff. Either apply the lense everywhere or get off your high horse.

It’s not her, she had no agency in choosing him only in how she reacted to circumstances forced upon her. At any rate, no matter which version, it’s still child sexual assault.

EXACTLY. She tried to make the best of it because she had no damn choice. Her bro would make her life hell if he finds out she doesn't please drogo and if she already has to please him she tries to deal with it, her love to him is a coping mechanism. @@justarandomgirlvx3578 this. Literally this. And yes you’re absolutely right, later on with other love interests she experiences it much differently, because the power dynamics are different and she actually has some. Drogo saying “you can say no” is basically worthless, it’s more so “you can say no right now but not always. And even if you do, I am in a position where I have the power to not respect it and face no consequences”(oh also she. Is. 13.) @@briandunfee4326 don’t be a moron. My point was that whether she says yes or no, doesn’t matter. When I say “consent is more about power dynamics” I mean that if someone has a ton of material and institutional power over another person it’s impossible for them to give meaningful consent. Secondly no, if anything it broadens the category of what can constitute rape. And it simultaneously explains what makes pedophilia so wrong, it’s the fact that no matter what the child is never in a powerful enough position to give any meaningful consent.

@@briandunfee4326 also I have no idea what you could possibly mean by “it seems like a good way to excuse the forms of sexual immorality you like” I don’t even know what you could possibly be thinking of there. This model of meaningful consent would mean a lord/lady of a house in Westeros for instance can easily rape an adult peasant because of their lack of institutional power. It’s not based on any empty ideals, rather the actual material dynamics that give our choices meaning and weight.

The show is obsessed with r*pe, and uses it as drama fodder and shock value. But I will say, even in the books, Dani's consent was still pretty murky. She was only 13 in the books, Khal was around 26, and she cried their first few times together even though she technically "consented." I still wish they hadn't portrayed it the way they did in the show, it's blatantly non-consensual and gives the narrative very little wiggle room and space to work on the audience's relationship with Dani and Khal's relationship. I suspect they felt the need to create some sort of drama, since in the show, the age gap isn't as severe.

That wasn't Drogo, it was the entire Dothraki lifestyle. Everything about it left her physically exhausted and in pain, and she felt alone because it was all so new to her and didn't know how to communicate her needs. However as soon as she gets used to it she's happier than ever, and thanks to the respect Drogo grants her she finally breaks free from her brother's oppression and discovers her own potential as a ruler. She'd never discovered that part of her otherwise; the books make it pretty clear, unlike the show, that as a whole their relationship was very positive for her.

@@youngnat It is a complex issue, because I agree it's not the sort of thing that would make a 13 year old happy. However she isn't written like a 13 year old. In her internal monologue she's definitely written like an adult. She thinks like an adult, has the sexual desires of an adult... And after marrying Drogo finally has the opportunity to act like an adult, which her brother hadn't allowed her, and thrives because of it. She's written in this unusual way since the very beginning; strategically judging everything around her, and repeating to herself over and over to keep her chin up. The threat of beatings from her brother makes her meek in the beginning but as soon as she marries Drogo she does quickly adapt and become happier than ever. Because her true personality shows; wild, connected to nature, intuitive, shameless, aggressive, sexual. Of course she's happier than ever with the Dothraki. The books are very forward about this. So yeah, its complex. In the books the feel is that she's different from all the other child POV characters in that she resembles a child in very few ways, psychologically. I think she was written this way to emphasize her superior intelligence and strange Targaryen personality, etc. It doesn't feel natural, in the book, no. It feels wondrous. But that's what her character and story are; hers is the only magic we see in the first book.

“Willingly” is a bit dubious since she was 13 on their wedding night and her brain wasn’t fully developed and she can’t actually consent, even if that happened in “real world history” between nobles (average age of marrying in the Middle Ages ranged between 21-27 interestingly enough). And GRRM has said if he had known the planned timeskip would be defunct then he would have aged her and a lot of the other characters up from the get go. That being said it IS way better than the show, which deliberately turned it into a fade to black rape scene. Meanwhile, book Dany initiated things with Drogo

I just finished reading this chapter in the book recently. He was much older than her in the books, but he asked her on their wedding night if it was "okay" to "proceed" with the consummation. For context, they sat at the wedding and it was virtually the same as the books, but Danaerys in the books FEARED Viserys, her brother because he was spiteful and angry and would hit her and abuse her often. On her wedding day, the entire time, she was focused mainly on her brother stewing in anger and annoyance about having to be at the wedding and she was worried he would be angry with her if she made the smallest mistake. She shifted her focus by says "I am the blood of the dragon." to give herself courage. Until that point in her life, she had never been the focus for any attention or treated like a princess until Khal Drogo provided her a young, strong, white horse which was symbolic, as the Dothraki gave their Khaleesi their best horse as a gesture to show her importance to the Khal. She had never even ridden a horse much until that point and slowly and timidly started walking the horse around, eventually smiling and galloping with the horse into a full ride with the Dothraki Khalissar chanting and yelling in cheer for their new Khaleesi. She had never felt more powerful and important and she attributed it as the best gift she'd ever been given and she began to love and admire Drogo and the Dothraki. She consented to their wedding night because she felt such love and joy because of the Khal. It was a far cry from the show and definitely had more detail and explanation. It's hard not to feel bad for Danaerys in the books and the show, but you don't truly understand her character in the beginning until you read the books.

Disagree. They handled it in the only way they could without sacrificing the creative intent of those early Dany chapters. They had to change how Drogo approached her because if they kept it the same, a lot of people wouldn't have seen their relationship as nearly as problematic as it was because show Dany was aged up. The show took the predatory and rapacious subtext of the Dany chapters and simply made it explicit in order to maintain the abusive nature of their relationship.

@@thelegacyofgaming2928 No one is forcing me to watch/read. I’m choosing to do that on my own. I still have every right to say if there are parts that make it hard to love these books/shows. That’s just me being real. Some of it reminds me of things that have happened in my own life, and that is okay, but it doesn’t make it easy to read those parts. It’s a conflicted thing to love something that reminds you of some of the worst shit you ever went through. It is also okay for me to say/think that when George writes some of this shit that it’s gross… because IT IS. People say that because of the timeframe when he wrote 13 y/o Danerys being a child bride and repeatedly r*aped by Khal Drogo in AGoT, that it wasn’t as taboo. That might hold true. Maybe we are more aware of it now. Who’s to say? But if it’s something that they shouldn’t be ashamed of, then why did they age Danerys up in the show?? Then, there are people who say that GRRM doesn’t have kids and doesn’t understand how to write them. While I can sort of understand that, especially back in the day when he started writing the ASOIAF books, there is NO EXCUSE for it now… and he VERY RECENTLY wrote Fire and Blood. That has TONS of examples of very, very young people (usually females) married off to older men. Does it mean I don’t like FaB or HotD? Not at all… but that doesn’t mean I have to love every aspect of the book and tv show. My other main issue I have with the stories George is telling, is that it’s not some niche thing that only some people might see or read… it’s some of THE MOST POPULAR MEDIA OUT THERE. This means that younger viewers/readers are going to see/read it and when they see how popular it is and has become, it is going to make them think that maybe society doesn’t see it as being as awful as it actually is. Same thing with regular viewers/readers… if THIS is in the most beloved and popular media around, people are going to get desensitized to how despicable it is. THAT is the problem I have with it, in a nutshell.

She was 13 and he was in his early 30s I think. Also it definitely isn't as consensual as the video makes it out to be. She was definitely assaulted because in the books she was crying and later on, she was on the verge of offing herself with how brutal and rough Khal Drogo was. She got Stockholm eventually after finding out she was pregnant.

@@hollyeve2465 I mean yeah I understand the cultural context that doesn't take away from the fact that she was a child lmao like I'm not trynna get political but it is wrong as common as it was, I'd categorize it as rape myself because she was indeed 13 years old and not as consensual like the person below you stated edit: plus I'm fairly sure (actually have my doubts idk) that George puts women in these situations precisely to explore them, the same way Rhaenyra is almost forced into a position of breeding like her mother even tho she always wanted to not be that, or the simple fact that she couldn't be queen even tho she was first in line, because she was a woman. I doubt George does this just to show how things used to be, I mean there are skinwalkers and dragons; I don't think is a historical depiction of the world.

In the book if I remember well, Khal Drogo rides with her until a specific place that has a great view, where he wants to make love with her. Dany is crying the whole time until they get there, and Drogo keeps swiping away her tears in a gentle way saying "no", one of the few words he knew in her language. He doesn't force himself on her, instead he let her touch him, his hair, let her brush them and braid them and if I remember correctly he braid her hair at the same time. He's very patient and actually sweet, i think they spend at least a couple of hours like that, and only after she stopped crying and she's actually more relaxed and even kinda attracted or intrigued by him... Thats when he makes his move and she's willing to make love with him... So yep no rape like in the show, he literally courts her using dothraki hair rizz

I dont know about anyone else, I've always imagined that although John Snow put a knife into Danery's heart everyone seemed to think that was that. Obviously, people forgot the prophsey. If through Danery's who has pure, magical blood from Old Valeria AND has Drogon her Dragon along with being magical also, together Drogon was able to save her and her unborn son from her relationship with John Snow. After Drogon destroyed the Iron Throne, he gently scooped Danery's Up and took her back to where Dragons were originally created. Just like John Snow, Danny is brought back to life, bares her son and 16 years later, Danny and Her Son fly into Kings Landing both riding dragons with an army mounted on their own dragon. To ensure peace, Danny's son will marry Sansa and they will rule together. He will be the Stallion who mounted the sky and with Sansa by his side they will rule in peace and prosperity until......there is always an UNTIL in every story I have ever read.😊❤❤❤❤😇
