Viewer's Fave: Kutumbh's Massive Goan Thali, Panjim, Goa, August 2023

Thanks to our viewer Mr Ritesh Pawar for recommending that we visit Kutumbh in Panjim. The chonak thali and special Goan mixed thali which we tried was just superb.
Other restaurants nearby are very famous and Insta savvy but we have no hesitation in saying that Kutumbh’s food is the true taste of home. We had a really enjoyable meal and at just over Rs 300 per head, with a soft drink each, it was very reasonable also.

Kutumbh is located on Dr Dada Vaidya Road, which connects Panjim’s Immaculate Conception church and Jama Masjid on one side, to the majestic Shree Mahalaxmi Temple on the other side. Kutumbh is just a few steps away from the temple.
The menu has a Kutumbh special Goan mixed thali (Rs 480), which we were immediately curious about. The description of items included rawa fried prawns and kingfish, fish curry, teesrio, kismur and chicken cafreal. This we had to try. So Maria and I would share the Kutumbh special Goan mixed thali (Rs 480) and Evelyn had the chonak thali (Rs 300).
Kutumbh's chonak thali had rice, prawns daangar (cutlet), roti, chonak, fish curry, teesrio, kismur, salad, French beans bhaji, sheera and sal kadi.
The Kutumbh special Goan mixed thali has prawns cutlet/prawns daangar, fish curry, crab xec xec (not xacuti!), chicken cafreal, dry prawn kismur, teesrio, French beans bhaji, salad, sheera, sal kadi, fried prawns, fied kingfish, roti and rice.
They serve the special thali in unique shaped, specially made thalis which they got from Kolhapur.
The food was just superb. Everything in the thali was tasty, especially the crab xec xec, prawns, all the fish items. It was a very nice touch that they had sheera, a traditional Goan sweet and didn’t just put some gulab jam or something from the mithai shop on the plate. For two of us the Kutumbh special thali at Rs 480 was effectively Rs 240 a head, and we could not finish it completely. It's difficult to find that kind of value for money in Panjim.
Besides a variety of thalis, Kutumbh also has a la carte Goan dishes like mutton xacuti (Rs 390), pomfret rechead (Rs 600) and veg caldin (Rs 180), besides a wide Chinese, Thai, tandoori and Continental menu.

@ Ms.Lesly. As a retired Malayalee Indian Navy Chief Engineer Officer, resident of Vizag,and an avid fish foodie, I thoroughly enjoy your vdos. I wait to see whether your eyebrows rise in appreciation after putting the first spoonful of food in your mouth (or else). More admirable is that you NEVER say any dish is bad even if it is. Sharing a map of Goa with locations of the better eateries there will be most appreciated as a guide to "outsiders" like me when visiting. That's awesome !! Thank you so much for the shout out .. Felt special !! Apparently my wife and me have always been seated at that same table since 2020 when we first visited the place. Kutumbh's family owners earlier had a Kirana shop which they sold and now their son runs the restaurant. He is also into events and movie promos and in June 2023 we had the pleasure of him being our host... Again, thanks to you Lesley for introducing us to Starlight at Assolna -- during our trip to South Goa we were there for almost every lunch and dinner -- we were staying at Fenecia in Betul - Quitol -- we usually stay near Benaulim very close to Martin's .. When in Benaulim / Colva we usually frequent Fishka / Richie (colva) -- maybe I will be in South Goa in September -- let's see. Its been 3 years of visiting Kutumbh and today I realised that there is a mezzanine floor seating !! 😊😊

@@lesleyingoaPlease also visit City Pride Restaurant. It's a small bar exactly opposite vivanta in St.Inez panjim but serves amazing fish thalis. There is also Bombil which i feel you'll should definitely cover. Both are in the same vicinity, bombil being a few steps away from Vivanta. Happy eating!

@@lesleyingoa sure! But definitely cover City Pride and also Cafe Ritz bar and restaurant, opposite sizzling China. It's the oldest Ritz, a small place but definitely serves a fab thali and other goan delicacies! Just incase you'll haven't been there.

Super review. Seems like amazing place. Cant wait to go there.. Also, take time out to visit Kamlabai restaurant (Mapusa) and meet the owner Tushar. And pls also do a review of Spice Goa , Karaswaddo, Mqpusa. Both the places are worth the travel from Benaulim.

Will definitely try this place in my next vist. I'll like to suggest a place for thali on calangute to candolim road behind decathlon, it's called prasads. I have eating here since last 8 years, and yes thali is what inprfer when im In Goa besides Kamath in panjim (for veg)

@lesley !! You are so lucky to get CHONAK in Kutumbh ... when we were there they had just Bangdo (spelt as unsatisfied) and Kingfish (Surmai for us Maharashtrians) however the Kismoor and Tisreo stole the show. Looking forward to be there once again in September.

Hi, chonak is more available now in Goa because it is farmed. If you are a fan of chonak, do try tamso. Nice and fleshy like chonak but softer and creamier

All the items are common to all faiths. Fish curry rice, rawa fry, crab xec xec etc unite all Goans. So does cafreal. Only the prawns daangar can be called a Goan Saraswat item. Godshe means sweet
