Uncle, when vikings were going for a raid, not all of them could afford the locally made battle axes. You know how much the blacksmith charges are in Scandinavia. They are astronomical. That is why most of the axes that time were ordered from China. The logistics was organized by traders from Middle East. The delivery could be ordered by camel (Alibaba) or by eagle (Aliexpress).

Destruction of antique ax. Electrolysis would have left it intact and black, a Light sealant and steel wool would be Restoration.

My thoughts exactly. However, if only 70 years old (younger than me) it wasn't really a "viking" axe. It was just make-believe, thank God. ... Hope he NEVER gets his hands close to a real artifact. .

Better yet ... Unsulfured Molasses 1 part to 9 parts water 2.5 weeks will remove everything without destructing good metal. I've used electrolysis and molasses is much more predictable easy and much more thorough. Try it you'll like it. Linseed oil and wipe off to keep rust at bay, like the old timers.
