Which is what Ragnar said they should do at the beginning of this fight. But Horik was blinded by his lust for revenge after being humiliated by Ecbert, and he was jealous of the fact that Ragnar was admired as a leader despite only being an Earl. Horik was a king who felt slighted by the fact that Ragnar was an individualist who refused to grovel before him. So any advice Ragnar tried to give, Horik would ignore it out of petty spite, no matter how sound the advice was. Horik was the reason they lost this fight. If Ragnar had been in charge they would never have even fought this battle in the first place, because he made it clear several times that he wanted to NEGOTIATE with Ecbert before jumping blindly into more senseless slaughter. This battle happened because King Horik murdered Ecberts peace envoys and humiliated Aethelwulf. Yet despite that Earl Ragnar still had King Horik's back and followed him to this battle. He tried warning him not to charge down that hill, but once again King Horik was too jealous, stupid, and threatened by Ragnar's intelligence to even consider listening to any voice except the voice in his egotistical head. Ragnar didn't even want to be King or Earl for that matter. All he wanted was to explore England and find better farm land for his family and his people, and of course to acquire wealth from his enemies along the way. However, he ended up becoming Earl and later King because ambitious men had their egos threatened by Ragnar's wisdom and the respect he invoked from the common folk. Common people hated men like Earl Haraldson because men like that only ever sucked the life out of the people they ruled for selfish gain. Ragnar actually knew what it was like to be a farmer, to be beholden to earls and kings. So people respected him more because he actually tried distributing wealth from raids fairly, he negotiated peace with enemies so his people could own land in England, he did not become absorbed with seeking revenge over being humiliated by enemies. If you pay attention to the story, the majority of the feuds he got caught up in he tried to avoid, but his enemies kept pushing him against the wall until he had no choice except to kill them or risk his family being killed if he chose to do nothing.

To me season 3 was the final good season. S4 onwards was just a mess and the writers grasping at straws to get shock value and views. I mean why else pull the Lagertha killing Aslaug, Rollo pulling the "Bjorn is my son", the whole Bjorn abandoning his family (Torvi and his kids), fucking Margarethe and all of the Ragnarsons obsession with her fir no good reason other than her being "pretty", Helga's death and Floki, and so much more.

They also generally lost pitched battles where they lacked a numbers advantage. The English(Anglo) language comes from the anglo-saxons being heavily influenced by French/Latin via the Normans.
