I must say I’m ashamed that, after living in Bengaluru for more than two decades, I didn’t know till now that the Wodayar dynasty ruled for six centuries. There is this feeling of rage at having been robbed of my own heritage. I pray for healing.

My community was originally from Mysore. My forefathers had to flee to Tamilnadu due to Tipu Sultan. Now it's been 200 years for us in Tamilnadu and we have nothing left in Mysore.

Mysore had one of the highest standards of living under wodeyars. First in many. We were fortunate tipu lost the war and was killed.

I am so glad someone like Mr. Sampath came forward and penned one of the magnanimous royal family of Indian history in a book that was never documented earlier. Thank you Mr. Sampath.

Very pleased that he mentioned about the deprivation of rich North Eastern history in NCERT textbooks. We all are taught that Mughals were the strongest rulers in India till the reign of Aurangzeb. But many few know the the Ahoms defeated the Mughals 17 times when the Mughals were at their peak. Some of Mughals soldiers that fought against the Ahoms in the Battle of Saraighat (1671) stayed back in Assam, and now their descendents have integrated so well with the Assamese culture that they oppose the illegal Bangladeshi migrants (whether Hindu or Muslim) as much as the original inhabitants of Assam. This is the multicultural society of India. I hope the NEP, changes the way history was written during the Marxist historians era. Bharat is my religion!!

Mysuru Wodeyars are the reason, India got Sir M Visvesvaraya. Among the princely states, Mysuru was the most developed and well governed state, with plethora of industries, abundant employment, high standards of living, exceptional irrigation system. Esterwhile Mysuru was a role model to follow. Sadly in our history books it has no mention.

I happened to read the tragic story of Princess "Victoria Gauramma" the daughter of the last King of Kodagu..She was taken to England at age 12 and apparently adopted by Queen Victoria and given her name.. she married a English man 30 years her senior and gave birth to a daughter. She died at the age of 23 of tuberculosis..while I was reading about her I also read that Queen Victoria had adopted several children from different countries and one of her famous "adopted" son was the last Maharaja of Sikh Empire Duleep Singh. The Kohinoor was taken away from him,he was converted too and named Victor Albert and married English girls..Heartbreaking truth 😔😔

Even our history books( West Bengal) portrayed the Wodeyars as emasculated British puppets . Mr. Sampath have you read about Surja Sen? I casually asked my husband born and brought up in Maharashtra , he did not know the names of most Bengali revolutionaries. Not sure why felt such an anger ...... I remember TV announcers struggling to.portray Indira Gandhi as a freedom fighter after her demise. We need to rectify the gaping holes in our history narrative .

My wife's grandfather was a sanskrit scholar sponsored by Mysuru Wodeyar. I have only heard about how much Wodeyars sponsored scholastic work by gathering scholars from all over India. Many of these scholastic achievements are underplayed today. I am glad Wodeyars are being recognized!

They saved traditional arts....by patronage.not banning or shunning native dances,music or other art and cultural heritage of Hindus, as what happened in directly administrative areas of British colonial ruled places

Mysore royals are true royals as they are the kings and queens in people's hearts. Constitutionally they might not have any power but they have the power of people's love. So simple and so connected to common people.

My maternal grandmother's family was from Mysore and remembered wodyars very fondly and respectful manner and spoke quite often how they made education affordable to middle and poor class people. Maharajah 's and Maharani's college were one such example. Had also heard about tipu's atrocities from them, kinda oral impartial history. Often thaught it was just exaggerated hearsay. During growing up days never thought people would distort history to such an extent.

About the Wodeyars, even today, Karnataka (and parts of TN and Kerala) runs on the infrastructure built by the Mysore maharajas. ALL IN USE EVEN TODAY - Pawning family jewels with the British to raise funds to complete the KRS dam! - Dozens of major canals for irrigation - Numerous bridges all over Karnataka-- Mysore, Bengaluru, Tumkur, Shivamogga etc - Many reservoirs built around Bengaluru, Tumkur, Chitradurga, Tanjore and North Karnataka - At least 1 hospital in every district with at least 1 lady doctor in every hospital - Animal hospitals in every district - RESERVATIONS FOR THE DOWNTRODDEN- SC/ST -> started by the Maharajas before independence!! - First city to be electrified in Asia- namma Bengaluru (not Tokyo, not Seoul, definitely not Bejing or Shanghai not any other place in Asia but "namma Bengaluru"!) - Underground drainage system of many cities in Karnataka and Pune! - Modern layouts in Bengaluru - Engg colleges- NIE, SJCE, Polytechnic and numerous training centers for tailoring, carpentry etc - Representation for the common man (panchayat leaders) in the court - Reservation for widows All while being a scholar of Kannada, English, Sanskrit, Karnatic music- instrument and vocal singing, even composer of many songs! When I was a kid I used to wonder why people of Mysore had the photo of the Maharaja in their homes along with Gods and Goddesses. Now I know! Tragedy is though I grew up in Bengaluru, I NEVER learnt an iota of any of these in school. I only learnt about these things in my late 30s by self study! Looking fwd to reading Vikram's book!

As a 9th class student from Andhra Pradesh, this is the first time for me hearing about Wadiyars. Our History books portrayed Tipu Sultan as 'the tiger of Mysore' but never even mentioned the name of 'Wadiyars' as far as I am concerned🙏 as a 5th class student studying about Gandhi and Nehru, I never felt them worthy as national leaders.

Nice Mr.Sampath and also need to fight with Governments to include our real freedom fighters,kings and their struggle as a subject in our school and college syllabus more.

Tipu Sultan is national hero of Pakistan. Their warships are named after him along with Babar, Gaznawi, Ghori. We have Pakistanis on this side of border who think of Tipu as a national hero.

tipu sultan had changed the name of Mysuru to ' nazarabad '. There are still a section of Mysuru called nazarabad, even legally recognized by the state & central governments with postal index numbers.

Can you organize publicised debate on this subject in Hindi and English & if feasible vernacular languages of other states ? We need to recreate local debates based on indigenous oral traditions, collected records of their respective histories. That would be a crucial journey for recreation of our indic history.

Nice to hear this. I am from Mysore and I think it is beautiful city - masterly planned, such a demonstration of munificence of Wodeyar kings. I never watched Sword of Tipu Sultan as I wanted to protest this serial. Being friends with so many Coorgis, Christians, Mysoreans from Srirangapatna area I did know Tipu was a tyrant. However not all Wodeyar kings were great. I know Swami Vivekananda advises the king to take more to kingly duties - notwithstanding the fact that the king’s dewans were superb administrators. However, it will be wonderful if Sampathji also researches about Tirumalaraya and his wife Alamelamma. I never studied about them but heard fascinating stories. How the wadiyar who was under the Vijayanagar empire cheated Tirumalaraya (the ruling chief at that time) and usurped his kingdom and property including the paperwork that was with his wife Alamelamma who wanted her minor son to ascend the throne. Faced with certain death at hands of wadeyar kings, the queen utters a curse that Talakadu become a barren land and whoever ascends the Mysore king from this family never have kids. She gives up her life after uttering the curse. Talakadu even today is barren land. Isn’t it fascinating that till date - no one who has ascended the throne as a natural heir has had a child?? Till date the curse runs. The present king is an adopted son (adopted after he was grown up). This is because the erstwhile king who was the natural heir Srikantadutta Wodeyar did not have kids. The king family has managed to adopt children among their relatives and make them ascend the throne. These kings via adoption have children. When this child (who is a natural heir) succeeds throne , he does not have children. This has happened till date. For 400 years!! However people of Mysore do like the Wodeyars but there is tremendous respect for administrators of Vijayanagar empire - especially this queen. One of the groups of people who helped the wadeyar in putting down the king Tirumalaraya and his wife is separated out - no one else marries into that family. It is that strict. These are fascinating stories so powerful and still playing out today.

True Sword of Tipu Sultan: Visit Madhuram temple in Kasargod, presently in Kerala. Tipu tried to pillage it. He arrogantly struck his sword into the ground. And couldn't pull it out, try what he might! Finally, he accepted defeat, accepted the power of Sri Krishna, the temple diety, and quietly went away! This sword is enclosed in a small structure and can be seen by visitors till date. Entry to temple is now only from a small narrow entrance at the side and not from the main road. Devotees are allowed to view the diety from a distance of about 30 feet. What he couldn't achieve directly using sword may eventually be achieved indirectly by secular governments in India.

1:28 - in the 90's - there was a serial called the sword of Tipu Sultan which demeaned and demonised the wadeyar family .. sure ...but the wadeyars have lots of wealth. .they could easily sue then and make their life hellish ...why did they not?? Could you explain???

Let's accept the Wodeyar rulers were impotent rulers, India has a history of mixing religious notions on historical subjects. We all need to accept there was some Muslim rulers of India who were impotent and some hindu rulers who were impotent and in this specific subject and this region one must acknowledge that the Wodeyar rulers here were impotent and Tipu Sultan being the only ruler in that region to challenge the British and infact Beat them initially.

Maharaja Marthandavarma - is given little importance in any historical records unfortunately ; in fact, this was the first defeat, a European naval power suffered at the hands of an Asian king/Nation. This honor has been wrong given to Japan[Admiral Tojo] in 1905 .
