what works for me is cut the pad off at the nose with a new blade, i have cut 6" wide vinyl blocks 1"1/2 to 7" wide to use as spacer once i have a measure, pin a few steps up to keep tail end form whipping with a awl, & work it up 3 steps @ a time with a block & a awl, no repeat ruler measurement, good job
