We must be the codger class - I did likewise. The film had an A listing, meaning that a minor had to be accompanied by an adult. It is quite challenging to disguise a malignant super-alien as a group of children, as it conflicts with our natural instinct to protect.

Superior material, superior suspense... The Brits could pull this off like no one else. I've often wondered, too, if this was on some level a premonition of the '60s Baby Boom. "Imagine them as teenagers...!"

Funnily enough in the original novel they were although they were still called "The Children" by the villagers or "the Cuckoos" by Zellaby since the distinction between children and teens did not really come into vogue until the late `60s-early `70s.

I was four years old when this movie came out; there used to be television ads for it. I got horrible, HORRIBLE, nightmares from these commercials. (It was also advertised pictorially in our Evening Bulletin newspaper and I got nightmares from them too.) Though it embarrasses me now, I was told that my mother actually gathered up the gumption to call the television stations to complain. Of course, later in my youth, I grew to love horror movies (though I didn't get a chance to see the whole "Village Of The Damned" until I was an adult!"

A stone cold classic. Meanwhile, SKY have released their version of The Midwich Cuckoos, wherein the children have different ethnicities. A key plot point of John Wyndham's novel is that many eerily similar-looking children are born at the same time. Sky try and cover that off by giving them all the same haircut, which is ludicrous.

I found this movie fascinating and believable. Scientists and individuals in certain governmental, religious, political, commercial ,private and other groups I believe practice or study telepathy, psychokinesis and group thought where the entire group can think as one. Because in general a group is physically and mentally stronger than one individual when the group is united as one. In reality there is a thin line between science fiction and pure science.

I always imagined this movie as a "Quatermass" movie with George Sanders as Q. He was diverted from his tasks at the British Rocket Group near Midwich because of the "incident", and it would have to have an ending where he wasn't killed off. Of course, I would have had Brian Donleavy play Quatermass, with his gruff "Doctor Who"-ish attitude. Title: "Quatermass 3: The Space Children".

Growing up (43 now) I was an avid reader especially of Sci Fi, I did read 'Triffids' by Wyndham, but didn't get to 'Midwich at the time, I read Well's, Orwell, Assimov, Clarke, Huxley etc. For some reason Midwich passed me by and I very recently heard an audio of it, then watched this soon after. Some things to say. Absolutely fantastic book, absolutely fantastic adaption, deserving of the praise. Quite how a screenwriter and/or director can transform a 239 pg novel into a 78 min film (so impeccably) is beyond me. However, they oughtn't have mentioned any 'I'm cold' references...immaterial. Also, why the title change? It actually put me off throughout the yrs as I've never been a horror fan. It's not exactly a horror.

@@matejsvigir1449because she had a craving for pickles, that was one of the signs back then that a girl was pregnant, women know those things, at least they did back then.

Well there is a 1995 version I like that one better generally, although the children are better in the 1960 version in my opinion because they seem more civil rather than full on robotic all the time. They even show that they're capable of mercy.

@@Bro-cx2jc That’s because there was subtlety and complexity back in the day, both in John Wyndham’s 1957 novel and the original film. Today it’s about shock value and base level movie making.

@@michaelschramm1064 Yeah the kids in the newer version were trying too hard. They were going beyond creepy to the point of just edgy and eye rolling most of the time (there were a few all right parts but Mara mostly seemed to be overdoing it).
