I lived in NYC for 7 years and now been living in Los Angeles for a bit more than 7 years. 1st I have to say that I miss NYC a lot mostly because of its awesome gay community or gayborhood. As you mentioned in NYC gay bars/clubs are not focused only in one or two areas and the other thing is that you can find different categories of gay bars like yuppie/Chelsea boys bars, bear bars(stocky/chubby guys) and even some classy senior bars like Townhouse where you can find mostly older guys. But here in LA area there's not even one bear bar. And as you mentioned it's much easier in NYC gay bars to socialize with others. Overall I think culturally there's a big gap between east coast and west coast. And lastly ,as you mentioned, access to gay bars in NYC is absolutely easier because of public transportation but in LA you have to drive to places and if the place is not your place you either have to drive all the way back home or just get stuck in there hopping maybe you can find someone interesting.

Took the words out of my mouth! So out of curiosity, do you consider going back to NYC, or are you set on staying in LA? Of course, there's more to life than just gay culture, but just curious about your thoughts. I was underwhelmed by LA and left for Miami (I prefer it here), however I was wondering even earlier today if I would have stayed in LA if Miami didn't exist. I miss elements of NYC but the weather alone and the easier, laid-back lifestyle of LA/Miami appeals more to me at this stage in life than the good that NYC can bring.

I lived in West Hollywood during my twink years so it was easy to make new friends there, but most of them did not last more than a couple of years because it is a very transient city. New York is very touristy and when I started coming here I made acquaintances very quickly so I felt comfortable moving there and still go to the Monster even in Pandemic times. My days going to the big clubs are over, and even when I was younger I did not like Splash or other discos. However, on occasion before the pandemic I still went to the Hangar or Ty's if I was off work early enough and had a good dinner before I met up with friends at the Monster. I even would get my hair cut right next door on occasion! But making new friends I think is easier in New York because it is not a city that tolerates ageism unless you are going to a mainly younger crowd hangout, which I wouldn't do. If you go to the more artistic bars or cabarets, you will get to meet like-minded people, and then there are sports bars as well like the Rock Bar. I just hope when the pandemic is really over that we can have our places back with friendly allies coming in, and not the Invaders of bachelorettes like before.

Keven you mention that the bars in HK have a yuppy type crowd. You should have seen The Works on the Upper West Side in 1995. That place was a TOTAL yuppie/preppie crowd. A lot of the guys there ( it was good looking crowd) looked like they went to Prep schools in New England. Many a night there were guys wearing shirts that said - Yale, Princeton, Columbia- I think they thought it might make them more desirable.

I’m thinking a great (multi-episode) topic might be the infamous gay hustler bars (from back in the day through to today), of various large cities in the USA and Canada. It’s rather tough to find out a lot of information on them and even harder to find footage on specific bars like ROUNDS in NYC. Do you have any links or would you consider this topic? Thx.

Your forgot to mention Long Beach gay bars and it in LA county on southeast corner near border of Orange County. On Broadway, there Mineshaft, Falcon, The Brit, Sweetwater Saloons and Broadway lounge all in walking distance and block away from a beach. There Hamburger Marys LB, Club Ribble(beachfront), Executive Club, Eagle 562, Flux and The Crest all in Long Beach. You should check it out.

Come on friend, Long Beach is not LA :) But I've never been so it wouldn't be appropriate for me to make a video about that scene anyway! Hopefully I get there one day...

KevenTalks LB has a very large gay scene. I feel that it’s more lesbian though. DTLA also is becoming very LGBT oriented. The straight clubs have SO MANY GAYS.

On point! As a tourist to LA and New York in the past I agree with these observations 100%. Gay venues tend to be a little unfriendly all around the world but LA just takes the cake in my humble opinion. I’d choose the scene in New York over LA any day (not that I am particularly fond of the scene as a general rule!). I’ve chatted to more locals at New York venues than I have in LA ones as they feel less superficial to me.
@KevenTalks
@KevenTalks 4 жыл бұрын
Totally, but again do you think it's a cultural thing or an infrastructure thing? Meaning in LA everything's more spread out - venues are WAY larger. In NYC you're often cramped which in a strange way makes it easier to mingle I think. I think it's probably a blend of both factors in the end.
@nelsondesousa9304
@nelsondesousa9304 4 жыл бұрын
KevenTalks oh yes sorry I missed that part haha. The tighter infrastructure in NYC definitely plays a part. I remember going to one venue that got so crammed I had to leave but the bonus was I got to mingle with a lot of people too 👍🏻 I also think a lot of it has to do with your own mindset too. NYC just automatically brings out a more radiant side of me whereas LA just brings out my worst side due to its many shortfalls (cars, superficiality, surburban layout etc). That almost certainly impacts on the energy that you put out there right??

@@nelsondesousa9304 That's so interesting because I think I'm the opposite! I feel like in NYC I'm always more restless / on edge and therefore often walking with a chip on my shoulder (one of the reasons I left), so it's fascinating that you're the opposite and more bubbly/friendly there than in LA!

@@KevenTalks these are my perspectives and observations as a tourist. Whenever anyone travels somewhere new they bring with them certain layers and baggage that they attach to that place. This year when I visited San Diego for the first time it felt more homely to me because in many ways the look and feel of the City mirrored my own hometown. The gay scene also felt quite small/compacted and friendlier which is what I prefer. Have you ever wondered what it is about NYC that triggered that chip on your shoulder? I think really big cities can be quote toxic because on the one hand they promise so much but yet they can under deliver. It just always feels like there's an extra layer to get past with people in places like LA and NYC. It's almost like ripping off one mask at a time in order to get to discover the real person. These cities are also highly competitive and transient which doesn't help much!
@KevenTalks
@KevenTalks 4 жыл бұрын
I think you answered it actually! NYC is fast-paced, hectic, intense, and competitive. Just in general I was always restless and easily agitated there - so I think I was more likely to walk around in public places like bars or restaurants with a chip on my shoulder than other places.

I lived in West Hollywood for 25 years and live in Manhattan now, 13 years. While I went to all of the WeHo bars, I preferred Mickey's for happy hour and Trunks and later Motherload for afterwards. The dance bars became filled with too many straight women later and it was just annoying.

Good Vid. I like that you mention the progression of the "gay-borhood" in NYC. Me being a life long New Yorker/Brooklynite, Chelsea when emerging in the late 80s-mid 90s was a curiosity. Hell's Kitchen was a WTF moment. LOL. At one time, these neighborhoods were not safe, especially HK. (Hence the unofficial name of the area taken from a New York Times article in 1881 coined by some local police to categorize the crime and the Irish gangs that lived and worked that part of NYC- the actual name of the area is Clinton). These areas still had affordable rents for businesses and apartment. The West Village and then Chelsea priced itself out so people and commerce move. LOL I do not anticipate the new gay mecca to be Inwood or the South Bronx. LADIES!!! stop moving north!!! I am a subway rider from the southern part of Brooklyn! LOL. The same can be said for Brooklyn. Park Slope and now Williamsburg and Greenpoint have a thriving LGBTQ population with some cool bars and clubs. One thing I must correct you on. Sundays and most weekdays in NYC are busy in the late afternoon-early evening as well as in WE-HO (WE-HO, I-HO, YOU-HO, WE ALL HO!! lol). Most places have beer blasts, 2 for 1 drinks, and drink specials. Some have drag shows along with gogo-boy or strippers. Places in the WV like the Stonewall, The Monster, Ty's, The Rock Bar and The Egale are packed on a Sunday. The same can be said for Boxers-NYC in Chelsea, since they have 2 for1 drinks from 4 to 9 pm 7 days a week. Friday and Saturday are still the main stay for the club/bar crowd as well, but along with the after work/day drinkers, all of us are out, drinks in hand by 6pm all year round, and I love it!!! :-) All the best to you.

Thanks for the comment! Sunday Funday is of course "a thing" in many places, not just LA, but I assure you NYC's version doesn't compare to WeHo's -- it's easily the most interesting day/night out in WeHo of the week, whereas I wouldn't say the same about NYC. Stay tuned for more videos coming soon :)

I'm from LA and I would just say that North hollywood as of 2010 to 2019 has its own gay scene. whats interesting about it is that it kinda caters to the 'others' under the rainbow. such as blacks and latinos and gay men 40+. the bars here are (and this is before covid) Oil can harry's which was a Disco/Western bar that catered mostly to 50+ people (basically anybody who actually was in there 20's in the 70's and 80's) Club Cobra which was pretty exclusively a latino bar. (its interesting going to a gay bar where everyone speaks Spanish and 75% of the room is hispanic ) The Bullet which is basically a fetish bar covering things like BDSM, Furry, Bear, Diaper Play, Leather, Puppy Play, etc. If your into something fringe they cater to it probably as long as it doesn't break the law LOL!. And Maybe C friends which is just kinda a dive bar. Noho is where you go if your weird or you just don't care about the 'scene' anymore and you just want to have fun.
