Vilnius Lithuania. A place unknown to many, but it deserves to be known to more!
It has possibly the worlds most ornate soviet airport arrivals space, pristine heritage medieval architecture, friendly people, cheap beer and staffless hotels that work seemlessly. Let's just not talk about Hesburger! 🤫

Also, Lithuanians don't like anything that is soviet, including Vilnius airport, cannot wait for it to be demolished and rebuilt. Lithuania was not part of soviet union, Lithuania was occupied and opressed by the soviet union, so we don't look at any soviet relics fondly, they scar our country, Lithuanians were the first ones to escape the soviet union and announce independence. Good to be mindful of that when you're a tourist.

When I travelled to France in the 90-ties there was a chain of hotels (Premiere or Etap?) without staff. But instead of a phone you needed to enter your invoice number everywhere you went, to enter the hotel, to go to your room, to go to the shower which was in the corridor, not in your room. And the invoice no was so long, that it was imposible to memorize. And imagine having a shower with the invoice on you? But I was with friends so there was always someone to open the door for you or accompany you to the shower room.

I actually really like hesburger and prefer it to mc Donald’s and I know a lot of Lithuanians who agree haha also a lot of the architecture in Lithuania is in fact soviet. Vilnius even still has the old soviet trams still running. A lot of the smaller towns you will be more likely to see soviet flat blocks and even the old style wooden houses which are my personal favourite.

Hello and thank you for visiting Vilnius and for your review. However I noticed some bias in expectations for Lithuania. 1. Soviet stuff. Lithuania is not Soviet for almost 33 years now. It was the first republic to break off USSR, to stop Soviet rule, which lead to complete collapse of the Soviet Empire. Let respect that. And you came desperately looking for anything Soviet on your way like it is the only field of interest for you. We don't live and talk Soviet, it is not part of our lives for a long time. And you kept bothering a taxi driver pointing at every building on your way calling it "Soviet" and "not Soviet". Many locals would not even know what you mean. 2. Hesburger. Has nothing to do with Lithuania. And it is not here to kill McDonalds or outweigh it. It is just another fast food chain, the giant from Scandinavia operating like in 17 European countries. They brought you lukewarm burger and didn't smile - sorry, not your lucky day. The girl who served you by the look of her hair braid was not even Lithuanian (Litho girls do NOT wear single thick braid of hair). She was most probably Ukrainian refugee working for minimal salary and would not speak not only English but probably not even Lithuanian. And her house was destroyed in a war. Sorry that she didn't smile and dance for you while bringing entry level promo price burger in a cheapest fast food chain where better doing Lithuanians don't even eat. 3. Lithuania is not Monte Carlo and not Dubai but also it is not Albania, Moldova or Kyrgyzstan (it could be but it is NOT!). It went thru massive transformation and as a ex-Soviet state that was suffering from communism for 50 years, it could NOT do better that it is already doing now. Let respect that. Best of luck with your travels, peace and no hard feelings.

@@robinaxxford6559 Thanks for noticing that. It is true that so called Eastern Europeans do not walk and smile to everyone like clowns on streets. But... in more personal contacts they change - we do smile and are get nice with friends, just not with strangers. Saying that I also put my 5 cents here about smiling in countries I visited or lived. Service in Germany, Italy or France often is quite rude. Spain is viceously rude. Also no one smiles in thouse countries on streets. The same with NYC or Seattle. But... These is "allowed" for Westerners but if it is Eastern Europe it immediately becomes an "Soviet behavior". This is ridiculous! Also, in Turkey (the country) they went fathest with rudness - they are artificially nice to you when luring into a shop but once you leave without buying they can curse you, scream at you. I never seen Lithuanian actually raising voice or screaming at customers. They have way too low temper for that. They just smile less showing teeth, that is all but they are actually not rude or screaming. Or refusing to serve you. If we look closer to that example with the girl in a burger place she did nothing rude except not smiling. At the end of the day it is a burger place not a tip place. At least she brought him a burger to a table. In McDonalds they don't do that.

If you thinking that fast food can be 'a treat' in Lithuania you will be disappointed. We have very different taste for a food, very traditional national kitchen and all this fast food ,which came into our country not very long time ago,has no traditions or roots here. It is a foreign food, not healthy and not tasty. This is food for very young people mostly. You need to do homework before you are going somewhere to avoid disappointment :) When I've tried traditional fish and chips in England I was disappointed too, because it was no where near that beautiful fresh fish taste I used to buy in Klaipeda market :)
