Living thing.. this is why I love music..Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower was a good song.. great infact.. but Hendrix's cover of it added some Missing depth.. Same with Johnny Cash taking Hurt from a song mostly about doing drugs and turning it into the culmination of the human experience with a Haunting quality... of love.. life.. regret.. fragility and riddled with emotion.

@@Eliath1984 Couldn't agree more! It was such a perfect song to wrap up The Downward Spiral. Then I got to see NIN live & the song made such a perfect encore. Then Johnny Cash comes & raises the song to an even greater height with even greater stakes by essentially being the culmination of the final chapter in his very real life.

When Reznor was asked if Cash could cover his song, Reznor said he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video. I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure.

Listen to the pain in the voice of Johnny Cash. It was one of the last songs he did before his death. Trent's version is more about the addiction aspect, but Johnny's version is more about coming to the end of his life, and hurting those he loves by leaving them in death.

NIN's Trent Reznor wrote this song in 1994 about his issues with self-harm and heroin addiction. Johnny Cash released his cover version in March 2003. His "sweetest friend" was his wife June, who passed away in May 2003. Cash himself died in September of the same year. Johnny Cash had battled with addiction to amphetamines for much of his life and his wife also had addiction issues with pharmaceutical drugs. His family and friends have stated that Johnny was is a lot of pain the last few years of his life and that June felt that he was only keeping himself alive for her. When she lost her life due to complications from heart surgery, he was able to let himself go too. Medically, he died from complications resulting from his diabetes, though many say he simply died from a broken heart.

Johnny Cash was a badass, he was as metal as metal can be before metal was even a thing. A rock-n-roller, a rebel and an outlaw. He never liked the label of country music and he will always be welcome in any genre, as far as I'm concerned anyway. His version of the song is about him dying and hurting everyone by leaving them behind. Many (Including Trent Reznor) see it as the best version of the song, an unflinching look at a strong, proud man coming to terms with decay and, ultimately, death. it is as powerful and unexpected a celebration of the outlaw spirit as it’s possible to find. And within a year of its release this giant of a man, this unimpeachable rock’n’roll rebel, was dead. Side note - he was a wild drug fiend, adulterer, and social rebel who nonetheless retained a deep Christian faith throughout his whole life. Cash once called himself “the biggest sinner of them all” and claimed he was “evil”, but he was deeply troubled by his own failings.

Johnny Cash actually covered NIN, but Trent actually said ‘this is now Johnny Cash’s song.’ I never had the fortune to see Johnny Cash perform it but I did get to see NIN play it live about 5 years ago. Trent Reznor still gets emotional when performing it. I personally like both versions for different reasons, and for different moods. The original is on The Downward Spiral. The very last verse ends one of the darkest concept albums (dealing with an emotional breakdown, drugs, mental illness, and people taking advantage of someone in their worst state) ends on a positive note. The lines ‘if I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself. I would find away’ give hope, because it basically represents someone either overdosing, or in a suicide attempt (I think both, like they took enough to die), who finally accepted help from someone they expected to have left them to death. Like their friend or lover, or someone. Maybe they found them, or the narrator called out because they regretted what they had done. This person, their sweetest friend, is getting them help, calling an ambulance or giving Narcan, or something. They are questioning why someone would help them because they are so screwed up, putting drugs and anger above friends and family. They don’t think they deserve it, but at the end they are saying ‘I’ll get better because I owe it to you. I don’t know why you care, and you shouldn’t, but you do, and I don’t want to hurt you again.’ I think Johnny wanted time do this for his wife. I’m not sure who Trent’s loved one was, that gave him motivation to heal. For you guys, that person who helps you when you feel you don’t deserve it could represent your god. For me, when I was ok an emotional break down, pushing people away, there were a few people. My now husband, and some of my closest friends. They stuck by me when I’d say ugly things and isolate from everyone and everything. I was not on drugs but I was not in a good place, for two years.

He was a Christian like most Christians are Christians...... his family made him go to church and sing in the choir. However, he never lived a Christian lifestyle..... Sorry that's fiction. "John Carter Cash, 37, has written a book recounting his father’s lifelong struggle with drugs and revealing for the first time that his mother also was a major pill-popper, often paranoid that her third husband was unfaithful. The 35-year marriage of the two disparate personalities looked like a fairy-tale union from the outside, but “the reality is that the suffering continued and it worsened, if anything, throughout the years,” Cash said in an interview. With two junkies for parents, not to mention half-sisters who got hooked on drugs, it’s no surprise that he eventually became an addict himself. Although the young Cash got to travel the world, meet presidents and live in luxury, his childhood was filled with constant fear that his parents would divorce. Adding to the insecurity, financial woes in the 1980s - when his father’s recording career was at a low ebb - forced his parents to sell jewelry so that they could pay their large domestic staff."

@@ToolFist598 No Christian I know claims to be perfect. We are supposed to try to be Christ-like, but we fail at it more often than we succeed. I have known many Christians who have gone through similar struggles, myself included, to a lesser degree. Being a faithful Christian is harder for some than it is for others. Many have doubts about their faith, and turn their backs on it for years at a time. Some never return to it. But the only person who knows their own faith for sure is themselves. You are correct that he mostly did not live a Christian lifestyle, but only he and God know for sure what he believed. But I'm not going to run him down based on that. He is dead and gone, so why would I or anyone else, except maybe his own family. I consider myself a Christian, but I don't belong to a church that I attend regularly. My faith is a very private thing to me, and I try to, at the least, live by the golden rule of treating others how you would like to be treated. Thats a good rule to follow whether you are a believer or not.

The original of this song got me through a lot of dark places especially when I was a teenager. The NIN version is raw and sharp pain. Self loathing and despair. Johnny Cash's cover is the ache of a hard life and old wounds. Resignation for the life lived and faithful hope in the afterlife. Both are stunning. 💙

Vin is a total whopper. He's clearly a very well read fella but his ignorance of music, rock, metal, constantly astounds. He had no idea that Lemmy played bass for Motorhead ffs. Also the world's biggest Metallica fan but he'd never heard Kill em All! Just unbelievable. I wonder if he actually plugs in and plays his Jackson or whether it's just a very expensive toy? The Neil Young review inparticular was especially a low point.

This one is about loss to me. The video tells everything: an old man looks back at his life. Your heart breaks at the moment, he sings: "Everyone I know Goes away in the end" knowing he lost his wife shortly before singing this. I was listening to this many times the time my grandmother died. I had a really close relationship with her, this song collected and channeled my sadness....

"I never got to meet Johnny but I'm happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out. I have goose bumps right now thinking about it. "Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that's something that matters to me. It's not so much what other people think but the fact that this guy felt that it was worthy of interpreting. "He said afterwards it was a song that sounds like one he would have written in the '60s and that's wonderful".

I don't know why Sori is surprised Johnny Cash was requested "in a metal channel"... you just listened to the Beatles last week, for example, I'm guessing someone requested that too, lol. I didn't request this, but I think most Metal fans don't only listen to Metal, I know I don't. While you're at it, I'll even say you should react to "The Animals - House of the Rising Sun", just because, "why the hell not". And yeah, as you've learned from the comments this is a Nine Inch Nails cover, and you've done NiN before (not that they're Metal either) and you know they have fans here. Now, for some "healthy criticism" (I hope... that's my intention anyway), you really should have researched something like that. I'm not saying you should go and read stuff about the songs and ruin the surprise of the "topic of the song" for yourselves, but if you have the idea something is a cover, just google it to be sure who covered who... and if you have no idea it's a cover, well, you'll find out in the comments. Anyway, all I'll say about the song, is that Johnny Cash was so good, he actually made me like a Nine Inch Nails song. Yes, I'm saying I don't like NiN. Hell, I don't like Mayhem either, or Avenged Sevenfold, or a bunch of other bands you've done. But I do like Johnny Cash. Thankfully I don't have a sucessful reaction channel like you two, because I think I'd get way more abuse than you guys. :P

The original song is from Nice Inch Nails, Trent Reznor was so floored by his version that he said it was Johnny Cash's song now. Metalheads have a love for Cash, i think because of his darkness and deep voice. This song makes me cry every single time, no joke, i see myself too much in this song.

Had to pause the video when you said Reznor covered it out of respect for the original lol. We shouldn't forget that Reznor used his music to actually change his life around and get better. Heroin addict to clean, productive musician who went on to win an academy award for movie scores. The original NIN song is a million times better and it's not even close. Keep in mind, I love Johnny Cash.

Cash did a great version, but I hate cover reactions that don't have the original reaction as well. Even though credit is given to the original, that band never really gets the accolades they deserve. This is Trent Reznor's song, and should be heard by him. Nothing wrong with Cash, but now the original has to be compared to the remake, not the other way around.

The song is about hurting/turning everyone else around you inadvertently through human weakness(addiction or maybe something else)...and ultimately not ever being strong enough to change while everyone around you moves on...Basically leaving a hole in your life where you have to hurt yourself to feel. The lyric "You are someone else, i am still right here" is telling. Beautiful song that truly could have been custom written for johnny cash given his life story. The fact June died a few months before this cover, and johnny himself a few months after, just added to the emotion...especially if you were a fan of johnny cash at the time. The Trent Reznor/NIN version is also amazing though because it brings a new dimension to the meaning through the eye of nihilism. One of the great songs truly.
