This video explains the unique features and uses of vine charcoal. Vine charcoal can extremely useful for the initial sketching process in a charcoal drawing, but also some of the drawbacks of the material such as it's fragile state and lack of permanence.

Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. I don't know why these old art prof vids are coming up in my feed just now. Wow, what a change the channel has undergone. This is a great video with lots of info, but it's very much "the teacher up the front, with the students paying attention". Now the channel feels much more like an art journey that we are all travelling together: the teacher teaching the students and the students teaching the teacher, everyone celebrating art and creativity together.

can u tell about the difference between compressed charcoal and charcoal pencil???

The difference between compressed charcoal and charcoal pencil is that compressed charcoal is much softer, and it comes in a wide stick that has a blunt shape. Therefore, compressed charcoal is better for when you want to shade large areas. Charcoal pencil is dark like compressed charcoal, but in general is stiffer and creates less powder than compressed charcoal. Charcoal pencil comes in different softnesses: soft, medium, and hard whereas compressed charcoal does not. Charcoal pencil is excellent for details because you can sharpen it to a fine tip.
