I love how this game manages to have varied environments but still with the overarching theme of artificiality. I think the geek critique put it best when he said "super metroid's water level is meridia, the deep sea, fusion's is a fish tank"

The game design of Other M continues to baffle me. I can understand it trying to be different and more story driven, but seriously. Not being able to use the Varia suit in the fire area not because you don't have it, but instead because you are TOLD you can't use it was so fucking stupid.

Metroid is great when it has minimal story, but maximum lore. Like in Prime. In Prime, the story is simple. A distress signal brought Samus to a planet where she finds her arch nemesis and needs to kill him. But the planet, Talon IV, is so full of history and lore, and you learn so much about the Chozo culture if you take the time to scan things. It's in-depth, without being a full story. Such a fuckin' great game.

Honestly Other M really saddens me, because I feel like the Metroid series has a lot of really great story potential, but because one game came and dropped the ball _so immensely hard_ on that front, players will inevitably be resistant to anything even resembling a more involved story.

I remember when I got metroid fusion. I had it for gameboy advance. My mom, brother, and I were living in my aunt's RV in her driveway, because we didn't have a place to live at, and I got it as a Christmas present. It probably kept my mind off how much things sucked for a while. I don't think I beat it, but my brother got really far on his version.

This was one of my favorite games when I was younger played it on my gba sp constantly. And now almost 20 years later at the age of 30 am I going back and playing all the other metroid games I never played. Time flies man.

Like, I appreciate that Other M was bringing in ancillary lore from the manga and game manuals in an attempt to integrate them with the games themselves. But boy did they did it sloppily. It's very odd that despite being a renowned Bounty Hunter independent of the Federation's command for what I assume for a decade or more, that Samus would just accept orders given to her by Adam? Sure, he was her former commanding officer; but she went to the Bottle Ship of her own volition independently of what the Special Forces were doing there. She was under absolutely no obligation to do a damn thing he said to her. Least of all deny herself the use of life saving equipment. That's such an incredibly flimsy part of the plot. Along with Samus's character traits depicting her as being excessively vulnerable mentally and emotionally, when she has conquered so many challenges up to that point. She destroyed the Pirates on Zebes twice, cleared out the Metroid hive on SR388, defeated the Metroid Prime on Tallon IV, the Ing on Aether, and Dark Samus along with all Phazon; but now shes overwhelmed with fear and loses confidence in her abilities? Whack. Just terrible choices for the the first "story focused" game in the series.

Damn, Metroid fusion's morphball effect is the same as the effects of the pokeballs hitting the ground in pokemon RSE/FRLG. I never noticed it before and I love both games. ★The more you know★

I think Metroid's story isn't continuing because the guys behind development don't feel the Fusion Suit is "Iconic" to the Metroid series, and since the game makes it sort of apparent that it's staying that way. The entire game is a massive hint that the federation or at least someone at it is likely planned to be a future antagonist, which is also hinted at with the Mother Brain like beings in Prime 3. I could see the series taking two different turns from Fusion, either Samus gets portrayed as a villain by the Federation for learning too much about their darker metroid related projects, or something related to unexpected complications of the Metroid Vaccine, since it was canonically made rather quickly.

It's funny how much stuff that Vin says here that dates this stream. The obvious one being Vin noting that Metroid never got a 5th entry. Holyshit. That game is one of the best game I've ever played. I can finally relive my childhood with Vinny.

For me, and many others, the issue with other M is the portrayal and characterization of Samus. They kinda took a steaming dump on her character. And there's a bit of retconning. Like with Ridley and how she suddenly can't fight him because she's terrified? She's fought him just fine in every other game. Now this? But the main issue is, Samus has always been a strong, independent and bold spirit. And in this game they literally do the opposite. To the point where she'd rather risk serious injury and death, because someone didn't tell/authorize her to us the correct measures to protect herself. And constantly having to surround her by big burly men to keep her safe. It also was the first game where Samus had a voice. You'd think for the first time she had voice acting they'd really wanna nail it. And to end this, I'm reminded of zero punctuation's review on other M. And brings up that on the box of the game, it says now featuring full voiced movies. When that's your only selling point on a game, that's pretty indicative of the quality. That and boasting your game (an interactive medium) is full of cut scenes and non-playable parts (which are non-interactive).

This was the first gameboy game that genuinely scared me. Every time the SA-X might show up I NEVER wanted to go in the next room. I'd played enough of the other metroid games to know what kind of power SA-X was packing.

SA-X (or Sax as I call it) terrified me when i played this game. the one thing that actively terrifies me is when I'm not alone, and the thing I'm with trying to kill me. I don't know where it will pop up or when, I just know I'll encounter it someday. that's why games like "Hello Neighbor" are terrifying to me. he could literally be anywhere, and I wouldn't know!
