People always forget that each Smash has a joke character, and I'll be damned if Piranha Plant isn't the best one in the franchise's history. Totally caught us all off guard.

I feel like the Grinch leak kinda ruined the direct for a lot of people, because it raised expectations way too high for something that wasn’t real. I purposely avoided looking at the leak for that reason, and Sakurai even said to keep expectations low. I’m sad that trophies are gone, but the spirits system, while kinda weird, still looks interesting. Also, we’re finally getting a new adventure mode, which Sakurai said will focus more on gameplay and less on story, so it probably won’t have nearly as many cutscenes as Subspace Emissary. Anyway, I’m sure the game is still going to be fantastic, and I hope everyone will keep an open mind about the new stuff.

I hope this was a lesson in how we should stop glorifying and almost worshiping leaks and rumors... When a leak makes people be so upset that they pretty much ignore all the amazing shit the game has, just because 2 or 3 characters aren't in it. A game with 70 characters, around 100 unique stages with 2 variations each, almost 1000 music tracks, an extensive single player campaign with an overworld, leveling system, some hints at strategy and puzzle solving and unique scenarios, boss fights, endless collectibles... Yes, 3 characters that would make no sense to be announced at this point would for sure ruin the whole game. 0/10 lazy developer gimme goku

Friendly reminder that Piranha Plant has a Putrid Piranha color palette; ergo, we can technically play as a character from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door EDIT: oops, it's just a temporary palette change for one of the Plant's special moves, spitting poison, my bad! Still a really cool detail though.

Piranha Plant is like R.O.B and Wii Fit Trainer. Fighters you really didn't see coming, but after a while will be just another fighter in the roster.

This might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I think that including piranha plant was a smart move. It’s an extra character that’s free if you get the game early, yet, it’s not good enough for the majority of people to boycott the game over missing it. It’s just an extra character that the Smash devs were nice enough to include. They really didn’t have to include anything else, but they did anyway. Not to mention, DLC has been confirmed. A minimum of FIVE new characters. *NOTHING* is off the table yet.

Looking back, the direct wasn't even that bad, but there's no reason whatsoever why this had to be 40 minutes long. Spirits mode looks more interesting than when I saw it at first, but they spent waaay too much time talking about it.

Vinny, the direct is early for you but for Europe its not early enough and for Japan its late. They picked the best time where most people would be awake.

People being salty about the grinch leak being fake is my favorite shit. Sakurai specifically said that there wouldn't be as many newcomers as previous games. Granted he's a massive troll (case and point P L A N T G O D) but still Smash Utlimate's roster has: 8 Returning characters built almost entirely from the ground up to fit the engine 4 Veterans who got completely reworked aesthetics/mechanics 5 new clones 6 completely new characters including some of the most highly requested (Ridley, Simon, and K. Rool) 6 confirmed DLC characters bringing the total roster to 81 fucking characters Were people really expecting to have on top of that another echo and 5 newcomers??? Compared to Smash 4, this game already has 19 new characters, returning veterans included. Be salty about Banjo and Geno all you want, this game is looking absolutely incredible and this direct only added icing on the cake.

If you want a pure dose of cancer, look at the Twitch version of this video's chat. Lots of people with short term memory it looks like. Sakurai has worked so hard (for the 5th time) to make as many people happy with this game as possible, gave us Ridley and K.Rool (The latter of whom probably had some legal complications to get in, being co-created by a different company), and people are """""cancelling their pre-order""""" over this direct because of a fake leak that seemed too good to be true? For the record, I don't think most Smash fans are like that (heck I am one and haven't thought that despite the wierdness and salty-ness in competitive Smash), but I think I finally get why they have that reputation now. Thanks for not being one of those fans, Vinny. EDIT: Changed some of my wording to sound a little less harsh, was in a bit of a bad mood from the day when I initially wrote this. Some people are misinterpreting this rant to mean I'm telling people who don't like this game or have problems with certain aspects of it should shut up and I'm a hypocrite for not minding jokes about other devs, and that's not it at all. The issue I have is not with criticism (I thought this direct could have been way shorter and spared some of the mind-numbing details), it's with people just saying "Smash Devs go suck a d!ck" or something else really negative directed at a particular person/group of people simply because of some petty reason. They can do that all they want, just as much as I can say I think they're acting ungrateful after everything else. Tbh I get why they went for Incineroar instead of Decidueye, since it's much more popular over in Japan, apparently. I still would prefer Decidueye, but I'm perfectly content with the big boy

On one hand, by losing trophies, the various localization teams don't have to translate every single trophy description. If they had kept trophies, we'd probably be seeing a Spring or Summer 2019 release (I believe that's one thing that held up SSB4? Don't quote me on that.). On the other hand, I liked reading all the trophy descriptions. Kind of neutral on the spirit thing, since I wasn't a big fan of stickers from Brawl. :T

We got the announcement of 3 characters, a couple of assists and the intro for the story mode, dont think it was "no reason for a direct". What if you can free assist trophies along with fighters in world of light? Like you have the option to choose an assist trophy to help you in the adventure mode? Then you could have Richter and Alucard, Samus and the baby, Sonic and Shadow ect.

It makes me so mad watching this direct now knowing how awesome smash ultimate is and we got banjo even and who knows who else we might get later

I hope DLC can improve on the game later on. It seems like World of Light's going to be more about event matches and bosses instead of actual stages like previous adventure modes. Plus trophies being gone is a bummer, but all they'd have to do is give descriptions to spirits and it would accomplish the same thing. Maybe make it so you get the spirit's entry after you get it to a max level as a reward.

Originally, I was very mad that the leak was fake, and my favorite characters weren't in the game, but after I watched the world of light cinematic, it all went away. Not because of the world of light, but because I realized how much new I actually have to play with. I'm more than satisfied with this game, and I cant wait till this comes out. December 7th NEEEDS to come faster.
