In the previous episode, Canute and Wulf were talking about whether to raise taxes or downsize the army due to their financial difficulties. Then Canute came up with the idea.

There's probably a decent chance that Thorfinn can read Old Norse, but what's going on with that scene with the bible is even more interesting. If you take a look at the scene when Snake is introduced and that very same bible falls off of his face, you can see that it is pretty clearly written in Latin. Snake is simultaneously reading and translating that bible for Sverkel. One of the many small hints at Snake's backstory (there was going to be some anime original content for him that eventually got cut) that get revealed along the way during this season.

For your question midway I think it’s because Canute actually doesn’t have the money to pay off buying the farm. Why would he need to take it otherwise. Wars are expensive and he became king during one

also the reason why there was the violent approach to trying to get ketils land is bc even tho canute is the new king he doesnt have a lot of money which is why hes trying to get the farm and even if he did ketil is also filthy rich and his farm is his family heirloom basically he wouldnt be able to be bribed from the start. the only way to obtain the farm is from force and they are setting them up to make it seem like they are criminals who are disrespecting the king

Dude the gut punch is gonna start! Might be a minority here but i really love the little bubble that gets introduced about Arnheid and Gardar and how it's a catalyst for the development of both Thorfinn and Einar!

makes sense that arnheid has an affinity for einar. he has the look and kindness of gardar. also author has massive balls to segue add the gardar arnheid story to the farm arc. 👏👏👏👏 in retrospect its masterclass b😮t as it was getting released back then

you guys were mostly right about them setting ketil up but the coin guy was from what i believe is a higher up in the kings army to allow the youngest son to be able to kill 1 to be held accountable for the crime. where canutes plan slipped up was i guess he didnt think the older brother would be there to save the younger as it seemed they wanted the younger to die there aswell. (just what i thought maybe not true)

this is indeed setup episodes... canute needs money for maintaining his large army in britain. a lot of money. raising taxes would spread widespread discontent for the new king, so doing a false flag operation and sacrificing ketil was the least evil thing he can do. also just realized at the begining of ep13 that the slave lady with the crying baby was gardar's master's baby. narrative wise, gardar isn't so lost as to kill a innocent girl and her baby. imo

canute is faced with a dilemma, only the better of two worst choices. loot Ketil now under a pretense for short sighted benefit or face increasing taxes to everyone to fund and maintain a large expensive standing army. looting may perhaps give canute a hit to his prestige if done incorrectly and without pretense. he can extract certain wealth from Ketil from a long and short sighted perspective. he needs money NOW to fund an expensive and disciplined army that does not loot britain while at the same anglo saxons from revolting due to high taxes.
