Welcome to velo fan. In this series of audio tests I am experimenting with my audio gear,
If you watch the previous video, Test 15 you will get to hear how these speakers sounded when i bought them. I nearly gave up. I could not understand why it felt like i had no bass or low frequencies within the balance of the speakers.
If i did a frequency tone test i could get the low 35hz but anyway it transpired the previous owner had added toggle switches to the back panel which bypassed the crossover or used the crossover but even when using the crossover the polarity had been inverted, unsure why, maybe his amplifiers worked that way.
He owned a recording studio cant remember who he recorded but these were used at his home and i imagine the studio back in the day, Sadly he had passed away and i purchased from his son who knew nothing so it was a real pickle.
These speakers were originally purchased in 1990.
I have replaced the midrange units with brand new ones matched pair from ATC. I replaced the tweeters with a new pair of matched units by Peerless the company who bought out Vifa.
I have removed the toggles as very dangerous to bypass the crossover when using a normal integrated amplifer with full band width, i have then been able to correct the polarity from speaker binding posts to crossover so all is good now, only possible upgrade would be new bass drivers but will stick with the old ones for now, cost prohibitive.
So this test uses all same power cables etc so its purely a comparison between wrong and correct polarity. I am really optimistic even over youtube audio quality we are all going to see a huge huge improvement in sound from the now correct polarity, please leave comments watch both videos and my other stuff on this channel.
I am going to purchase some reference speaker cables from SHS Audio -Bergen Norway. These i feel will make a huge difference. In this video the speakers are on cheap speaker cables with core diameter maybe only 2mm.
This video has been recorded using a 3DIO Binaural microphone so please listen via headphones as this is advised for binaural recordings but that's only a recommendation perhaps you have better listening equipment.
