Merry Christmas! I believe that cooky is the spelling for a singular cooky and cookies is plural. I kinda remember that from spelling in my childhood, which was a loooonnngg time ago!

Yep, that’s what I learned too. Sometime after we learned to read, though, people started using cookie/cookies. It confused me mightily for a long time.

One of the things I love about the pictures in these old cookbooks is that the examples look like they were made by real people. They aren’t Martha Stewart perfect. I hope you and your family had the merriest of Christmases!🎄

Old lady here to offer an explanation in the cooky vs cookie debate LOL! As a child in the 1950's we were taught little rules to follow when it came to correct spelling. One of which was to change the "y" at the end of a singular word into an "i" before adding "es" to make it plural. An example would be "one bakery" and "two bakeries". Same with cooky. I'm not sure when the "y" was dropped from the singular but who really cares? Cookies never stay around long enough to debate the issue LOL! Have a great holiday.

The world needs a little more "vintage," as our lives before more and more virtual and we detach from the values of this earlier period! Thank you for bringing back the best of the past! Your videos make me stupid happy… your love for all vintage cookbooks and kitchenware makes me smile. For Christmas I ordered myself the Cooky Book which I had my husband wrap and stick under the tree. A few days before Christmas I came home from a thrift store with a 1980’s Cooking Treasury Cookbook, an Apple peeler, and a mini Crock-Pot (for dips). My husband wondered out loud about my purchases. As I breezed out of the kitchen I said over my shoulder, “Talk to Anna!”. 😂 He looked so confused. 😆

I binged on your videos and I must say that you can see that they are made with love and true passion for cooking and history. I especially liked the video about the food on a field trip So different from how I grew up On school trips we would bring lots of snacks, sweets and chocolates and eat on the bus and of course share with each other Breakfast I would eat a bun with nothing inside and chocolate and lunch my dad would make me little schnitzels (because that's the only thing I was willing to eat lol). In any case, it is important to me that you know that your videos are really excellent and fun to watch, to learn about America and the history and evolution of cooking. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Anna, thank you for so kindly sharing the pages of these books. I saw several recipes go by and am going to zoom in and hand copy them. The Holiday Hostess booklet reminded me of the felt crafting trend of the late 60's...my mother was there for it! It was also fun to see the photos and the background props, so many reminded me of decorations my mom and relatives had in their homes. Plus I can just imagine Don Draper's art department going to work on all those books for their advertising clients, can't you? So fun! Thank you again and I hope you'll consider doing more cookbook flip through videos.

I know I'd like to see how some of the festive breads bake up and taste. I'm just looking ahead for new ideas on future baking gifts to make.🙂 Enjoy your Christmas with family and friends. Hope you get lots of new vintage cookbooks to share with us in future videos! 🤗

I recall those aerosol squeeze cans of frosting from the 60s & 70s! They were so handy & came with little plastic decorator nozzle tips under the cap. It was actually very tasty (of course as teenagers our palettes were pretty unsophisticated!)

Seeing the Oatmeal Raisin Cookies in the last cookery booklet reminded me. For those of us with smaller gatherings, I felt like having a fruit cake vibe without the long fruitcake process. So I too a favorite oatmeal raisin cookie recipe and substituted mixed chopped fruit instead of raisins, soaked them in dark rum (use any liquor you enjoy) and spiced the cookies with fall spices (use your favorites). and baked as normal. They were delicious small fruitcake-like treats that satisfied my craving. Hugs again to all. Jim

Merry Christmas, Anna! Love the cook book discoveries and the memories it stirs up. Despite the internet providing instant searches for recipes, I much prefer a “hold-in-my-hand” cook book, pamphlet or even a recipe card when cooking and baking. I LOVE cookbooks and always get one for Christmas- but we went to the antique store yesterday and I walked away with about 10 vintage cookbooks!! I noticed on the back of the Betty Crocker holiday cookbook that the calendar date for Labor Day said September 5. The 5th landed on a Monday in the year1966. Edit: Easter was on April 10th in 1966 as well. I guess the book was published in 1965 for the year of 1966.

Anna, Happy Boxing day. you had a couple of questions which got me doing research. The natural plural of cooky would be cookies, the y changes to an ie (like pony ponies, cozy cozies, tidy tidies etc) How Cookie became a singular is the real mystery. I think it just has cutie appeal. There are two origins in English for the word cooky. Scotland in 1801 it refers to a bun. But the American influence comes from the Dutch Colonies in America in the early 1600s. The Dutch word Koekje or Koekie meaning little cake. Enjoy the rest of 23 and the New Year's holiday. Happy and prosperous new year to everyone. Hugs from Mexico Jim, retired

I don't know if you have covered the subject yet, but you may find it intereresting to look at some recipes from World War 2. Lots of foods were rationed or not available at all and people came up with all kinds of substitutions for the stuff they couldn't get. I am sure this would be reflected in the cookbooks of the time, but the best sources for these recipes are newspapers. Most newspapers had a cooking column and people would send in recipes they had found or made up themselves. You will find a lot of creativity in these columns. They had to make do as best they could, and by using as little of the rationed products as possible, they were making more available for "our boys" fighting overseas. The war had an impact on every facet of life, including how we put together a healthful, palatable meal.
