Күн бұрын

Welcome to the illuminating watches channel. This video is for people who currently collect modern digital watches such as g-shock squares and timex command, as well as those that are already down the vintage digital watch rabbit hole, to provide the former with 4 reasons as to why going the vintage route will provide them with much additional fun, and for the latter it may provide some new angles.
All the classic brands are referenced like Casio with the Casio A-100 and Casio F-100 , Timex Ironman, Seiko digital, Orient digital, Braun digital watches and the like, but we also consider the industry in different countries like Soviet digital watches and German digital watches. Most of the reasons derive from an interest in digital watch history - or digital horology - , but other things such as the joy of searching for digital watches on Ebay is also referenced. I hope you enjoy the video and please do like, comment, subscribe and take a look at my other videos if you are minded to do so.

I have a growing collection of early digital watches. Those which I like to describe as embracing space-age optimism. The original Optels and "big digits" are still works of art, but I have a handful of LED classics like the Wittnauer Polara and Sears Roebuck Phasar. Great video!

Looking at this video brought back lots of memories from my childhood! I have a small collection of modern digitals, and vintage digitals are very attractive... However the costs are increasing, and the shipment cost to south america makes impossible to acquire good pieces... I was forced to stop looking at ebay, there are 350+ us dollars casio cosmo-phase for sale (grail watch for me), but unfortunately waaay out of my price range. I agree that vintage digitals are amazing As always, thanks for sharing!

I have been collecting vintage digitals for years. Unfortunately, many others are now as well. However I have 3 perfect Seiko G757 5020 in the collection (the ultimate unaffordable 80s watch from my childhood memories) in the collection. I also have a few 60s and 70s Seiko and Rolex divers as well. But how is it a 50 something year old still feels like a kid when searching for digitals from that period? Another great post thank you.

Great video, thanks! I do have to get an old Casiotron on my wrist at some point... Orient still makes digitals. At least in Brazil. Not under their name though. They use the X Games brand here. I have a few. Interestingly, the ones I opened up had Ricoh branded movements. So, Orient and Ricoh are still in the game, at least in some parts of the world :). Also regarding modern waches, Speidel, a German brands, make a Casio-esque full metal digital. Armitron also makes some full metal digitals.. GOt love these thigs!

Awesome video man, as always. For me the main reason is the construction was better for many models in the past that were made out of steel and had screws on the modules (instead of plastic and clips) so you could easily replace parts if needed. That kind of quality is now reserved for the high end models that cost a fortune, plus they don't make interesting complications in digital watches anymore like the video games, cosmo phase, moon graph, remote controls, etc. One might argue that smart watches do some of those things and more but if you have to "charge" them it's like owning a tamagotchi and not a real watch.

Amazing channel man! Sadly, I don’t think there are any bargains to be had. EBay prices are ludicrous. I hoped after seeing sky high prices for mechanical and even quartz watches, digis may be overlooked. But nothing is overlooked anymore. People just slap a “vintage” label on anything and want hundreds. The best solution I find is just buying a brand new Armitron Griffy. Better value than any over priced and maybe faulty used digi.

To be more precise it's asking prices that are ludicrous. The problem today is that everyone thinks their items are collectable and therefore worth mega bucks. It's not just watches either. I see items listed on Ebay with ridiculous asking prices but they're on there week after week, month after month and they remain unsold. I'm hoping this silly trend finally breaks.

I don't believe this. There's a place for me and my 3 older Armitrons that brought me down this rabbit hole back in 2010? Mine are late 2000s/2010 discontinued models but I totally get the vintage vibe with them. Watch reference numbers on them are 40/8177SIL (that's where it all started), 40/8172BLK, and 40/8210RED (different version of the first watch). Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I became famous enough for experts like Nico Leonard to see and react to those on my wrist instead of more Rolexes. I don't even wear them for that, they keep things interesting for me even if no else notices them. I'll now proceed to bring one along with me as I re-enter the entirely different rabbit hole that is the nostalgic colorful world of Super Mario 64
