Time to fix up this vintage Generation one Transformer Megatron that I was sent recently. Loose limbs, missing weapons, worn stickers, and a tad dirty. All things that are repairable. So let's get him ready to fight those pesky Autobots again.

Hey Dave, Seeing you often need to open toys for repair you might want a isesamo tool. These are designed to work at seams to loosen up clips, they are quite thin yet durable and have pointed and rounded ends for any type of seam. I know them from BigClive.com where he calls them "Spudggers" and Clive takes electronics apart with his, so on toys possible uses are limitless.

Dave, sorry to be ‘that guy’ but you mentioned that the Megs toy didn’t do the cartoon version justice. But surely you’re aware that the toy dates back to 1974. The cartoon version was an interpretation of it. If anything, the cartoon over-sold the toy! Anyway, I love G1 Megs. I got him for Xmas circa 1986 and still have him... he’s still looking pretty tight!

Pledge Revive It floor gloss. Might be sold under a different name depending on your part of the world. Use a toothpick to apply small beads to loose joints, move everything around to spread the Pledge, allow to dry. Wipe off excess with a warm, damp rag. It shouldn't damage anything, I use it on all my toys. If the joints are still loose then do a second application.

Megatron back to full magnificence! Great job as ever, Dave! I never liked the robot mode of the toy either. I used him primarily in gun form as a kid, which is probably why the outer stickers/decals were more worn. I vividly remember putting that one sticker on incorrectly and being really irritated at myself. I didn't want to risk damaging it so I just left it. I'm just happy that you fixed him all up and only needed to find his scope. I have no idea where that was lost but I never used that silly chrome "gun" either. @@toypolloi I'm not entirely sure, it may not after all upon double-checking. It's easy to bend the plastic tab that the trigger mechanism pulls out of position by simply transforming in the wrong order. I actually did this to mine; didn't know you could break it this way before hand. It won't transform solidly when this is the case, either; I use a screwdriver to get it into place now when I do so. I actually just saw Transfixed has a video on repairing this damaged tab, and may do so to mine soon. But, if it can be damaged in the ways I know that it can, I'd be willing to be that the whole upper chest assembly has to removed much more carefully in repairs to the versions of Megatron with the firing mechansim intact.

If you got disappointments about Megatron… I’ve got 1 word (actually a couple) to counter that. Them being Ironhide/Ratchet. With the cartoon, they took HUGE liberties, & I’m kind of in the camp that the cartoon ruined the series. Fun little toys (Ironhide/Ratchet), but they didn’t look like the animation characters AT ALL. At least with Megatron, you’d at least tell that it’s him. You could say they same with Bumblebee. I remember showing the toy G1 (not the chromed G2) to a couple friends a couple times, & they kept thinking that it was Goldbug & not Bee. When the show started it borrowed heavily from the Marvel comic, & as time progressed; became it’s own thing. Which I’m ‘cool’ with, but with what I felt was poor writing, the interest in the series wained. Heavily. I didn’t mind so much that Prime got killed… I thought that it sucked as a kid… but hey… it’s a war & people die? Right? But it was the direction & writing that they took after the killed the series. If they stayed a little more true to original series, I have a feeling that it would’ve been a series like Star Trek where it would have been an almost decade long running series. But it ran into a problem like modern Star Wars. They went too far from the source material, upset a lot of the fans, & it came back to bite them on the butt. I had G1 Megatron as a kid, & I liked the toy. The only thing that I didn’t like about him his arms/shoulders were too easy to break. But when it comes matching the toy to the cartoon model, I can’t think of ANY OF THE CHARACTERS that actually looked like the toy/show. They were close enough where you could tell who was who, but I can’t think of anyone that was spot on. So you gotta take that aspect of it with a grain of salt.

And as a side note TP, do you own a sonic cleaner? I ask because that’s something that I use on my rebuilds. I got it mostly because I soak/clean my mouth guards in mine. And I double up & put some of my smaller parts in it as well just to get cleaned. It show you what a difference it makes… ½ of time if something’s yellowed, just a ½ hour soaking in warm water (45-50 degrees) & put through a ½ hour sonic cleaning… it’s knocked down 3-4 shades of yellow, & if there’s any gunk on it… most of the time it just shakes the junk off it. It’s not for everyone… even if there’s a better method… sometimes people like to do things ‘their way’, for me it makes the job a lot easier. Ever thought of throwing that into the mix?

In complete gun form, it's obvious that it is the gun from the great 1960's show, 'The Man From U. N. C. L. E.' I had one when I was a kid. I was put off Transformers, because of the disparity in scale of the figures. Were they the same scale, Optimus Prime would simply drive over Megatron. Game over, man. Game over. Good restore, though. Nice one.

Dave, I'm afraid you and many TF fans are under a bit of a misconception. The G1 toy line actually precedes the comics and the cartoon series. The toys are NOT based on the cartoon, but rather it's the other way around! The comics and cartoon developed looks based on the figures in the original toy designs! Marvel actually had to use the toys to develop the looks of the bots in their comic book series. All of the artists working on those books received the actual toys as reference, and I actually have six of those reference toys in my personal collection because two of my teachers from the Joe Kubert School, Jose Delbo and Kim DeMulder, worked on the comics, and they told me that was the deal, and Kim gave me his original toys. My Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Jazz and Bubblebee are the figures used as reference by Kim when he inked the comics. The toys debuted at Toyfare in early '84, then Marvel did the comics, and the cartoon was the last to debut. It's not fair to blame the toys for looking different than the cartoon. The toys were done first, but the animated are responsible for the changes to the designs. Imagine trying to animate the look of the toys in an animated series! Yikes! They simplified their looks, and gave them slightly more human faces and statures in the cartoon series, which was a wise move. Nice video! The G1 Megatron's head and his floppy legs and weird arms will never satisfy fans of the cartoon series. How could it? The cartoon series redesigned him to look much more streamline and cool-looking.

To be fair the cartoon doesn't do the toy justice. Certainly they could have made some changes to the diaclone line so the toy would match the cartoon better. I think the idea, however, was to create a cartoon series, like MOTU, to sell an existing toy line.

When I was a kid I also didn't like the Megatron toy so I never asked for it. It looked SO ugly and he looked so awesome in the cartoons! I had Shockwave and he kind of became the defacto leader for my Decepticon forces because he looked awesome compared to the cartoon. I also had a strong dislike for the Ratchet and Iron Hide toys...yuck, lol !

Biggest problem with old Bucket Head here* is he wasn't designed off the cartoon rather he was designed for the show based off the toy. The original Megatron started life as Diaclone D-16, Hasbro when partnering with Takara chose that for their villain leader and the animation team simply gave him a better look which they managed in spades. Megatron alongside Robotnik (Satam) and Megabyte of Reboot are some of my all-time favorite cartoon villains, the only thing I can't forgive Megatron for is creating that abomination of Electricity Kreemzek (Don't care about the spelling, I hate that blasted thing.) Because of a personal reason I detest unkillable electric critters like that. But otherwise great character. *sorry I am a Transformers fan big time and his classic head was a bucket helmet we all know this. It isn't a attack on how great a villain he was/is just being silly. Transformers Prime combined the best of his classic and made him outright scary, while also giving him a great redemption too. Frank Welker is and always will be awesome in the role. David Kaye is great at BW era Megs too.

Talk to KZfaq. I have no control on that. And no matter how many they show, I still get next to nothing from them 😔

This particular Megatron was the worst. I wanted it so bad. And then a friend got one. And then I didn't want one anymore. It looks nothing like the cartoon. Though, the gun transformation was still cool.

I hate two things about G1 Megatron - his legs and gun barrel sticking on the side.
