Japanese bikes do not use Philips or Posidrive screws, they are JIS heads, you need to get yourself a Vessel JIS impact screwdriver, then life will be much easier 😁

Currently restoring a 79 gl1000, bought a JIS screwdriver set but use my Phillips screwdrivers 99% of the time! You don’t need to buy anything.

@@WhySoSeriously101I've been working on Japanese motorcycles for 30 years and have only been using Phillips screwdriver and impacts too and I've never had a problem either.

I had high hopes for this video,.great to watch an old abandoned bike being saved and given a new lease of life, or so I thought. Trying to free the starter button with channel locks, using a Philips screwdriver on rusted JIS screws, jamming a flathead screwdriver into the ignition. Even the fact that you thought 20 plus year old timing belts would be ok had me wondering what you were thinking. This bike deserved better treatment and I'm sure there are several viewers of your video that would have wanted to be as lucky as you in finding such a barn find. I just think it's a real shame the way you're approaching this.

YUP, very cringe worthy... I bought a '81 GL1100 & '97 Valkyrie, no history for either so first to replace were the timing belts.

Had the same bike many years ago. Found the best way to use the center Stand, stand alongside the left side of the bike facing forward with your hands on the handlebars. With your right foot stand up on the center stand letting your weight push it down as you pull back lightly on the handlebars. The stand pivots right up slick as can be.😊
@vashonwatchdog
@vashonwatchdog 2 күн бұрын
I did it much the same way, but did not use the handlebars for anything more than keeping the front wheel straight as I stood on the stand and lifted from the crash bar in front of the saddlebag

Yes, I would like to see you video switching parts over to get a running bike. I bought an identical Aspencade as this one brand new, and had it for 10 years. Same brown color. Traded it off on a Harley in 1992. Have always regretted trading it off. Should have kept it. It was a bear riding around in city traffic, but boy was it great on the highway. I just subscribed to your channel and an looking forward to your videos on this bike. Ride safe!

Sad you guys did not do your research before touching this beautiful motorcycle. The issue with the starter button is the screw underneath it that needs to be loosened a little. You also overtightened the screwed on the valve cover which will definitely leak soon. This bike requires everything to be torqued correctly. I hope you guys decide to read up on how to restore gl1100. I usually do not criticize anyone on the Internet but unfortunately gotten really sad seeing this video. I know you mean well though :)

Same as the one I bought about 20 years ago, had 10 years with few issues, 11 th year I had to do a full strip, frame had rotted through by petrol tank and on bottem frame rail which was removable. Petrol tank had also rotted out. Did all that and then sold it as it was getting too heavy to manoeuvre. S😢till miss that bike.

Bought a bike on online auction, front end damage. When it arrived, truck driver helped me unload it. Front wheel scraping tire so we didn't realize it was in gear until on the ground. Must have been in top gear when wrecked and no one changed, as the foot shift was bent against the frame and clutch cable broken. Engine was fine, but forks and frame by neck bent.

Why would you start cranking a crusty bike that hasn't been started in more than 20 or 30 years without putting some oil down the cylinders? If cylinders were ok, there's a good chance you scored them or pistons by cranking without lube. Was there even any oil in crankcase? I have to admit I started skipping around because you didn't seem to have a cohesive methodology for tackling this project and what I saw of your approach in first 20 minutes of video just seemed to be all over the place. I think you need to have a consistent plan in place with these kind of restoration projects. Good luck with it though.
