I just turned 67. I started building models back in the late 50's and early 60's. Watching these videos really provide me with a trip back in time. I am glad that I found your pages.

I am 65. I started building model cars/trucks around age 12. My dad was in the military so I would save up and get a model now and then from the BX. I think they were maybe a buck or two back then with no sales tax. When my dad finally retired to Mesa Az we had a place called Webster's hobby shop. This is late to early 70's. I started buying my models from them plus K-mart. Today I have every model I ever built including one's my mother destroyed over the years in boxes. They are all displayed on shelves in my shop. All 200 plus of them. Last year my model building buddy John I lost track of 30 years prior passed away. I went to his service, His family wanted me to have all his models many I gave him as gifts. He like me had never stopped building and had collected over 200 built models some I gave him when we were kids in the 70's. I also have close to 150 unbuilt NIB models. You never loose the knack. Just the eye sight. Ever since a detached left retina it has slowed my model building down but with magnification I am back at it. Not to the level I once was but close. Seeing he models have made me realize I have many of them built and unbuilt. Guess I need to get at it and build some more. Where is your store located? Thanks

Great finds! I have been building models since the late 1950's and my first model was an SMP Pontiac Bonneville. SMP - Scale Model Products, eventually was folded into AMT - Aluminum Model Toys. Check youtube posts on the history. The ads on the box bottoms seemed like only to be used a few years. They were meant to "cross-sell" other items by the manufacturer. I can imagine somebody at the company saying, "Hey, we can use that space to sell more stuff. I can also see someone else saying, "That costs money, stop it!" Those boxes are practically a history of model car kits almost from the beginning. Oh yeah, that 1961 AMT kit would have a side view drawing of model type on a sticker that sealed the box on one or both ends . They eventually wear/fall off if handled enough. Face it, 65 years of handling and storage takes its toll on boxes!

Although I commented in part one of this video I remember seeing so many of those car kits in the local Woolworths where I bought my models. I was building plastic models from the late 50's right up through the mid 70's ending with the Tamiya tank kits I didn't build too many car kits, but when I did it was generally Monogram while my brother preferred Revell. When you brought out those AMT accessory packs I remember seeing those in some of the larger hobby shops back in the late 60's. Really good video's brought back a lot of great memories.

I remember getting that book. it came out when I was 10. I was 11 or 12 when I got it as I was just beginning my love for modeling. I SO need to find the space to start building again. If I ever get a place large enough. I Loved My "Snake and Mongoose" kit. I always wanted the top fuel versions to finish the set. But I couldn't find them in the early/mid 1970's. Then I got into Military kits. I used to bug my local shop to get any outdated Verlinden catalogues as they were the new hot thing. Thanks for the trip down memory Lane guys

I’m a builder myself, I don’t buy to just stack them in the shelf. That being said. I have a few older models, like the 3 in 1’s that I’m not sure I’m building yet. I’ve also bought kits that I plan to build but were on sale so I bought them early. I’ve also bought several of 1 type so build a box stock and to customize. So I have quite a few but they’re all to be built. Wether I get to them while I’m still physically able to build them, is another story. I also open my diecast😜

From box #2, I think I remember building the Joey Chitwood kit around 1974. The ramps did it for me. It was the first time I had ever had my pupils dilated, I I remember trying to count the number of bricks I needed to stack with eyes that refused to focus. Building the car was out of the question, but I could count bricks, sort of.

Very nice collection of kits, parts and builders dreams. Having bought my first kit n 68, I have never really stopped buying building and collecting. I have a massive collection that is about 10 times larger that im looking to start downsizing. Andy I also once had the vision of a model car museum. Both built ups and unbuilt kits,I would live to get n touch with u as the history of the hobby needs to stay alive as well as knowledge of what's what. Im n nor cal if ur interested n a 50 collection, please post ur contact info ok. Will check n from time to time. For the years and $ I've put into my collection it would b nearly impossible to do again,so I prefer to keep it together and one can literally show each yr make and model of almost every car ever kitted. Thnx again. Doug

Oh man...I'M THAT GUY! I've got way too many kits in storage. I'm in my mid 60's and have been building and collecting models since the late '60's. Out of everything you've shown my favorite is the old AMT 1957 Chevrolet hardtop. You could chop the top (if you had the guts) and customize it to within an inch of it's life. And if all the various custom versions weren't enough, the drag racer build was over the top. Even the stock version was well detailed. I'm more of a hot rod, custom car, and old nostalgia drag car type person. Man, I've got to build, sell or eat some of my stuff. Don't want a postmortem video of someone going through my collection. Thanks for sharing! Have fun.

I believe the X-EL promo reissues started in the 1970s and were produced until about 2000. An improvement over the original JoHan promos, as the X-EL models were non-warping styrene rather than warp-prone acetate.

Lovin' the passion in all this. I built a few custom cars in the 70s but being based in the UK was mainly into Airfix cars and Tamiya. However having loved US muscle cars then classic from 50s and 60s I was able to get into the kits in the past 5-6 years, esp with the re-issues. I am glad I wasnt into them back in the day as the nostalgia pain here would be killing me. I even love the Monogram cars from the 20s eg the Cords and Doosies. 😍 I can also totally relate to the 'completist' mentally of this collector as having no money when I was building back in the day, I have been buying complete sets where I can. I really think the majority of these kits need to go on display as a memory to the collector as I am sure he would love to share his passion and the care he took for all those years.

One thing I found out about original issue, over re-issue, is details. Or the lack of it after a molds been used for decades. I'm a fan of the AMT 51 Chev Fleetline. Dunno why. But generally, Its awesome imo. Your mileage may vary. Or so I thought. Happened to win one on the Eb in a lot. Didn't think much of it, other than the box art was different. When I eventually opened it. Phwoah! Instead of the side trim being almost unintelligible. I mean the 2000s release could've had "Defluxed" without the L on its side for all I knew. The original trim read DELUXE in bold script. Wasn't just that that had me amazed. molded in wiring was bold. Seat texture was crisp. Now, if I can grab an original kit over a re-issue. I'll snag that sucker quicker than beer on a hot day. TLDR: I like em old. lol

Insider rumor had it in the 1980s, that Monogram brought out that 1970 Boss Mustang - at the time and in orange - because the editor of Scale Auto Enthusiast Magazine, Gary Schmidt, owned that exact car in real life. There was even an article about it called The Boss's Boss. I wrote for SAE from 1979 until the mid-1980s, and am pretty sure the rumor is true.

The JoHan ‘72 Torino “stockcar” has one of the best Stock bodies actually . It has all the trim and emblems ( that you would normally remove to make a racecar ) . Funny thing is that one of JoHans last Ford Promos was the ‘72 Torino . It was a curb side , had great detail with the trim and emblems and had the GT hood scoop ( which was an option on Torino and Ranchero for ‘72&73 ) . While the “stockcar” kit has an opening hood , it’s a flat plain ( no scoop ) hood . I’m sure using the newer Revell Starsky Torino as a donor , that ‘72 JoHan Torino can be a nice factory stock car .

I had that '66 Malibu SS in the original Monogram. I remember the flame decals. Don't know what happened to it, maybe it's still in a box out in storage.

I'm pretty sure that I have that Monogram 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe somewhere...and a Mercury Cougar XR7 to go with.

I eventually want to find two of those mpc 69 dodge charger 500 kits the molded in yellow dynacharger.. I used to have one that got combined with the early 80's mpc/amt 69 dodge charger Daytona kit in white with the smooth roof I had the dynacharger body, and my dad had the charger Daytona kit,I was in highschool and friend of mine offered me $45 for it put together because he hadn't seen a yellow one.. and I've had several 66 Chevy Malibu SS swamprat kits and the 65 Pontiac GTO kits!! And as far as the trailer kits I remember the diamond in the rough 40 Ford sedan and I believe a 56 Ford truck, and they also made a orange midget style sandrail type dragster car and trailer kit I believe were both ertyl.. and I love the third gen Camaro kits, but the 78 Chevy Camaro midnight z has to be my favorite one's.
