⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Vintage Restored 1960s R36ML "Redbird" Subway Cars 9542-9543 on a Test Run!

The old "redbird" cars are made up of several different car classes: the R26, R28, R29, R33ML, R33WF, R36WF, and R36ML. The R36MLs were a very small fleet of cars, of which only a single pair, 9542-9543, remains.
This pair narrowly escaped being stripped for disposal in 2003 and was stored awaiting restoration. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the retirement of the redbirds, this pair was restored to operating status and successfully completed a test run. Enjoy this special look at the first time the cars have operated on the subway system under their own power in 20 years!

When I see a redbird, I remember those cold winter days when the heat ran so good on those cars, that the back of your calves got really hot! (The vents were like a couple of inches away). Rode 'em all the time on the 6 line.

The RedBirds are my Favorite Trains of ALL TIME. This my friends in the other Cities like Chicago with CTA, Los Angeles with LA Metro, Seattle with Sound Transit, ATL with MATA, and other cites. These are our original trains!

Got to ride the very last Redbird revenue run on the Flushing Line in 2003. Had to sneak out of work for an hour or so, but totally worth it!

For most of the time the R-36 WF (picture window bluebird) fleet existed, 20 cars were permanently assigned to the mainline routes since the fleet size exceeded the size needed for Flushing Line service. The 1, 6 and sometimes the 3 were where they usually ran, mixed with older cars. I'm pretty sure they never ran as solid trains. So a museum train like this is historically accurate (aside from the livery timelines, roll sign types and grime and graffiti).

This train set is a legend in NYC history, love it or hate it. This is fascinating seeing it in the new South Ferry station 🚉 it's like the train set went through a portal into the future 😅

@@DKS225 GE R36 9700 at Vernon-Jackson. 9542-9543 briefly appear in Spider-Man (2002), as with 2000 Subway Series cars 9712-9713.

@@r32fan 1. I have a Discord server for information on stuff like this, usually these events are posted like a month or more in advance to when they happen 2. It’s unlikely to use the TOMC two years in a row especially because the NYTM announced themselves that they wanna continue using the R1/9 for fantrips until they can’t run anymore

I recall 1998 NYCT RTSs 9542 and 9543 (have seen both). 9542 and 9543 are now 2021 XDE40s.

Now they have to restore those old R-26 and R-28 cars still stored at Concourse. Those have been there rotting away since 2003. They could be restore but it will take a lot to do so

They were actually motive power for the Dyre Line adhesion train until 2013, before permanently retired and stored at Concourse since. Their deterioration may have already reached a critical stage.

A lot has definitely changed in the 20 years since the Redbirds retired back in 2003.

That's because they have the R142/As on the 2 5 4 and the 7 Flushing line. The only oldest fleets we have left is the R62S R62AS on the 1 3 6 S lines. We definitely have to start appciating the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines because when the brand new R262/As open and close ways it's gonna be retiring the R62S R62AS. The R62AS R62S will definitely turn in to work trains and the pump trains and the garage trains.

No stickers on them. They will have rolling signs on them. It's definitely gonna running on the Holidays schedules and that's it.

@@TrainLover-wt9ix Anytime as long as they are not on the road for testing or moves from yard to yard. Best view would be from the Bronx side of the University Heights Bridge. A new high rise is being on the north side of 207 Street west of the river north of the bridge and it is hindering the view. If the cars are on tracks 2-13 outside the main shop, best view would be the northbound IRT 1 elevated platform.
