Review of vintage 1960s silva type 1 explorer compass. Silva company invented the base plate protractor compass in 1930s with liquid dampened needle.

Awesome trip down memory lane. I inherited a vintage compass from my older brother who was a SAR member in our local Sheriffs Ofc. I wasn't aware it's a vintage compass. Not until I saw this video. Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane.

I'M STILL USING MY DAD'S WW 11 COMPASS since I was a scout 60 years ago or so . All the kids & grand kids have the silva style compasses. Happy Trails long time no see.

I'm holding in my hand, according to the old Silva advertising you showed, a Type 5 Pathfinder. I had it in boy scouts in the early 70's. Mine is the official Boy Scout model with the BSA logo on it. Thanks for your video.

I have a vintage Silva compass. I bought it at a Flea Market 20 years ago for a buck. It's very similar in construction to the one in the video. Marked in degrees though.

It was a very interesting video, thank you for sharing your knowledge of compasses! The old skeleton metal frame version looked very interesting and it is the first time I see one of those. Fascinating how many basic principles have remained the same while materials and designs have evolved a lot.

I’ve inherited a Silva ranger 15t with the 400grad, the 400grad scale was being tried out to make it easier to navigate because it’s easier to split 400 into forth and eights

Found a silve 6400explorer. For Army use on back... 10/ 57 on back stamp...1st one I've seen with up to 30* E W decnalation on bezel. No mirror lid like yours... Made in Sweden. But assembled in US...

I think what limits the life of a compass is how quickly bubbles form. I had an expensive compase become useless and extremely cheap compass never form any bubbles.

The compasses are still great quality, but it is such a shame that they are not made in Sweden anymore...

Thanks, enjoying your work. Silva also make a Type 54 baseplate compass, the same but with a sighting prism built into the bezel. You can take an accurate sighting and read the scale, holding the compass at eye level. In some ways better than the Type S mirror baseplate compass. Ray Mears.com offer hand made leather pouches for Type 4 or Type S.

I noticed another difference in the compasses. On the vintage one, instead of E and W on the dial, there are O and V. Any insight into why?

Hi, i want to buy a silva ranger but im a bit unsure of what i want. I want the ranger s for the mirror because i belive it adds a protective shell. I also want the global needle from the ranger global. I live in europe and i dont usualy go to the other hemisphere but maybe if i go id want my compass to work as intended. What would you advise me?

I wouldn’t be too bothered about a global needle, If you ever go to the Southern Hemisphere buying another compass will be a small cost

@@verysurvival but how exactly a normal compass wouldnt work in the southern hemisphere? Because i heard that if you tilt the compass you could make it work. Im new to compasses and i want to clarify some thing to figure out whats best for me. Thx for help.
