A review of the Silva Ranger 515 CL Compass presented by Krik of Black Owl Outdoors. The Silva Ranger CL compass contains a plethora of features including: a clinometer, map magnifier, geared declination adjustment, sighting mirror, luminous points for night use and many more. While the compass may be too feature rich for the novice outdoorsman, it provides more than enough to satisfy the avid man, or woman, of the woods.

I bought a Ranger Model 15 about 20-22 years ago and has been a wonderful compass. Well, as luck would have it, it just developed a bubble last week and broke the declination adjustment screw on top of that. As this young man done, I called the American manufacturer and they requested I send it back for a Ranger 515 CL. There may be better compasses out there but they're customer service is second to none!

Yea, me too Carlos. One of these days Stony and I will get it done. As of now it will probably be a very simple 'how to' video and then maybe another more in depth video for orieteering. -Krik

Canadensis? Heck, I'm right down the road from you! I just received my Ranger CL 515 today. One thing, I like the declination adjustment marker better on my Suunto M3, because it doesn't cover up the degrees and is easy to set. On the Silva Ranger the marker goes all the way down and hides the degrees of declination. I had to use the degrees on the face of the compass I read from my Suunto. 12 degrees declination is 166 degrees on the face. Silva should look into this.

Can you recommend a more basic but similar compass? I mean one with out the inclinometer, but has the declination adjustment? It is still a kind of "voodoo art" for beginners to add declination into bearings, even for an experienced backpacker like me. My Boy Scouts manual doesn't mention using declination! It basically covers the 1-2-3 stuff. I have yet to see a GOOD video explaining the use of declinations.

Silva moved their production to Asia...Indonesia or China, I'm not sure, quality dropped dramatically. Suunto is still made in Finland and quality is top notch.

I am in the mark for a new compass. I have been going back and forth between the Brunton Truarc 15, The Suunto Mc-2 and the Silva Ranger 515. What are your thoughts on the Silva. I have heard not such good things in the reviews and was wondering your experience

I would advise everyone who is thinking about purchasing a modern era Silva Ranger to look elsewhere, such as a Suunto MC-2, an old Brunton 15TDCL from Sweden, or even a newer Brunton made in USA. The Silvas are made in China. I had one develop a larger than 1/2" air bubble just sitting in an air conditioned room most of its life. Not the build quality you want in the backcountry.

Perfect design, not cheap, abt 100 $,but surprisedly poor quality. In bacpack stay without liquid on the manufacturing sealing melted "plug" ,than become useless. Not my choice again. Disappointed
