🙋🏼 ABOUT ME: Hi guys! My name is Alyona. I was born in Russia. I'm a musician. And I love art, makeup, fashion, style and beautiful environments. I love playing with makeup and fashion, but at the same time, I’m quite a minimalistic person. I don't like the idea of being fixated on the body too much. I have an alternative and unconventional viewpoint on beauty, the body types and face shapes. I love helping other women find their "it" and finally discover their beauty and boost their confidence.
I have several series on my channel that you might be interested in such as: Body Types, Contouring, Makeup History and Makeup Transformations. Also some random beauty hacks about skin care, hair, nails and beauty in general.

That's not reeeally the point of the photos referenced. Most of the modern photos weren't people trying to look "modern" or even historically accurate, and were likely done for photoshoots. Aly is trying to explain how to incorporate elements from 50s trends and shapes. It helps to use those extreme costume-y photos to pinpoint what makes them costume-y in our viewpoint today.

Dressing 50’s is not clownish. Dressing in bright colors is not too much. We are all going to leave this earth one day, and I would rather say “I wore what I wanted” than “I wore what I was told looked best on me by a strangers on the internet because I feared peoples’ opinions of me”
@veramariaadriana

To me, the elements described as “clownish” in this video such as the cherry and polka dot prints, the bandana hairstyle and the really heavy makeup are very stereotypical for the 1950s and more rockabilly/modern pinup style rather than authentic 1950s. The hairstyle with the scarf for instance is more 1940s, when women had to tie up their hair because they were working in factories during the war even though it did look different from the modern variations! I dress 50s everyday and strife to look more authentic, so I tend to stay away from those elements. A lot of outfits worn by for instance Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren could still be quite relevant today: a high neck sweater or a blouse combined with a calf length pencil or circle skirt for 50s (or a knee length a-line skirt for the forties!) looks really authentic with the right hairstyle and accessories and modern without those. I could go on for hours about this haha but I really think that if the outfit is quite simple you can kind of make it more fifties or modern depending on what you’re going for with hair, accessories and makeup!

Absolutely! Many of the pinup models of today dress like an editorial from the 50s, not necessarily the every day fashion of the 50s. I enjoy their costume-like style; it just doesn’t work for most people in real life. A more authentic look doesn’t implement every 50s element in one outfit (if authentic is the goal) and employs more timeless pieces.

When people use the cherry print and basically think it’s 50s, it looks clownish. I don’t think that pattern was actually all that popular in everyday wear then. The examples she used didn’t represent the 50s very well.
@thevintagekitty
@thevintagekitty 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I talk about this all the time, if you really study everyday fashion of the 1950s, most people were wearing neutrals: coats, jackets, skirts etc. were in plaids, tweeds, wool, linen etc. not just "polka dots" and cherry print. Shoes tended to be black, brown and same went with purses. Most women could not afford 12 purses like we have today, so if they picked a new purse, it was going to be practical enough to be worn with many different outfits. I totally agree with you; what most people think of the 1950s (scarves, flowers in the hair, bright colors, sharp black liner and extremely tight fitting clothes) that is editorial, pin-up and teenage fashion, not authentic 1950s fashion.

The cheesy costume-ish ones are pretty inaccurate to what the 50s actually was. This is why I avoid vintage reproduction clothing, because it's usually geared towards this modern pin-up look that I'm not a fan of.

Yes. I was a child in the 50s and remember how women dressed. There were expensive stores like Neiman Marcus that carried designer and copies of designer clothes in subtle colors like black, navy, cream, white, not a pattern in sight. Chic womennin the 50s dresses in the shapes but not wild pattern at all.

I wear vintage style all the time, and I completely agree with everything that you said. I am a theatrical romantic body type. I feel that this vintage silhouette from the 1940s to 1950s makes my body look nice, and it complements my personality. I think the moment it looks like a costume is when you try to only stick in one time period strictly. Sometimes I wear a petticoat to make my skirt stand out, but if I do I make sure that everything else is very modern. You can do that with prints, Color combinations, or accessories. Rockabilly is not the only way to do vintage clothing😁 GREAT JOB ALY!!!

I'm a bit confused as to why anyone would think that vintage fashion looks clownish or costumey. Just dwelve into real used vintage clothes from the time and there you go! If that's expensive (it really doesn't need to be), as many said, maybe stray away from rockabilly subculture's take on 50s clothes as it's entirely its own thing (but still not costumey??). You can buy a lot of 50s silhouette clothes a bit everywhere. It's just about studying the era, in order to retain what makes that silhouette and what doesn't look cheap, and thankfully we have a sea of information at the tip of our fingers now! :) If you feel costumey still when wearing it, I'd say that it's perhaps just that you're not comfortable in that style of dress, and it's perhaps not for you:) sometimes we like a style without it resonating with who we are, and that's when it feels not right.

The main problem I find with this video is that it just lacks research and is based on very stereotypical modern pinup or just exaggerated retro (not vintage) styles, which often mix 1940s with 1950s & 60s and use modern fabrics, cuts and accessories - very surprising, as usually Aly’s videos are very well thought through. Where I see a solution is to play with the 3 layers of vintage style: the silhouette, the texture and the color palette. An outfit lands in the costume-ish, clownish esthetic for me, is when the silhouette is not historically accurate (wrong length, waistline, shoulders, etc.), on top the garment and accessories are made out of modern materials (for example the typical stiff polyester with elastase, so the texture does not work at all) and we have a very obviously modern color palette on top. I personally find that silhouette is key, especially when it comes to the undergarments (they make a huge difference) and the cut of the clothes. Keep at least 1 of these 3 features and play around with the rest.

I'd say is more the quality of the fabric and the cut of the dress. If it's cheap then it'll look costumy. There's youtubers that dress vintage, and I mean they dress like the era, not only taking inspiration, and they look amazing because more often than not they make their own clothes with good fabrics and the right cut and fit :)

If you want to try vintage style, please check out Karolina Zebrowska's video about what real 1950's fashion looked like. What most people think of the 50's was like is not true at all, & even Aly has some of the advice wrong in this video (probably because it's hard to research since the misinformation about this era is so prevalent). Modern "50's vintage" girls looks clownish because they aren't historically accurate, so it's like a Halloween costume instead of clothes.

I think that a lot of what makes vintage look 'clownish' is if people don't fully feel comfortable in something, and also don't fully commit to material that doesn't look cheap. Unless you're buying actual vintage, a lot of cheaper replica fashion can look very 'Party-City,' has that ugly polyester-sheen, and doesn't look like something someone would actually wear outside of a party. The people I see who best replicate vintage looks wear fabrics that are obviously more expensive, or breathable, or actually things people would wear back in the day. They also tend to know their history, and not mash together five different aesthetics from 1940-1960, which are obviously completely different periods. New Look Dior mixed with early 40s factory worker, for example, will probably just look weird, because that's the modern equivalent of mixing 2006 harem pants with 2000 denim crop tops.

Well..actually 50s has different styles and cuts, thinking everything was those huge skirts an very femenine designs is very stereotypical. You can adapt 50s to more body types and not just those you mentioned. Yin would look better on very femenine floral prints and flowy fabrics, meanwhile gamines with more yang on their bodies can still look amazing on 50s fashion but with more structured and fitted clothing as well with more bright, geometrical and overall "pop" styles. You're also ignoring the more classical and high fashion styles from the fifties that consisted on tight skirts, fitted jackets, big hats and gloves, stuff a yang dominant as Audrey Hepburn used to wear. I think we have picked out what we like about the 80's and re-created those pieces with a modern twist. Or style them in a different way. It's a lot looser now, like an 80's blazer thrown over shorts and a tee rather than in the boardroom or women wearing actual men's suits in a way that evokes the 80's silhouette. Side note: I use to pick vintage for a while and I found a lot of items from the mid 80's - early nineties that mimic clothing from the 30's-50's but in cheaper fabrics and in boxier cuts which is so weird to think about since they come to define some of our ideas of the 80's aesthetic, which in themselves are facsimiles of other decades.... 😅

I don't feel too clownish when I wear vintage looks, but I do feel way too formal and/or mature. For instance a pencil skirt+top is already dressy for 2021; then add hose, a neckerchief and pearl earrings and suddenly I look like a bank teller. So I usually look to casual vintage looks for inspiration. That, and menswear-inspired vintage clothing usually wears well today. Edited to add: and find out what people with your same vibe were wearing in whatever decade is your inspiration. There were casual, vampy, tomboyish, artsy, etc., people from all generations. Sometimes it helps to look past the "top 3 most famous style icons" from whatever decade and instead look up poets, musicians, scientists, comedians, activists, lesbians, and teenagers and maybe you'll find your own icons.

Late 40's and early 50's read the same. Early 40's and late 50's is where the difference is the loudest. The "Dior New look" iconic of the 50's was actualy from late 40's. Nobody back then would change the wardrobe in 5 years, the change was Very slow and gradual.

@@LaLaLo what is the difference in siluette between 1949 and 1950? What changed in one year? Even movies filmed in one year might only come out the next year and the wardrobe for that year might have been bought in 1948... Nobody threw out their clothes in New years's eve of 1949, then went out to buy New clothes at january First 1950. Dior's New look was presented in febuary of 1947, in 1957 we still have photos of Brigitte Bardot wearing the same siluette. The pin up stile that was coined in the war was seen long after the war was over as we can see in pictures taken well into the 1950's of Marilyn Monroe. Balenciaga and Givanchy were making well into 1954 the straight skirts and tailored uniforme like jackets that were popular in the 1940's. So could you, please explain to me wich siluettes that were fashionable in the late 1940's that did not carry into the early 1950's because all I can think of are those of the New look created by Dior in 1947 and the uniforme like jackets and skirt combo that Givenchy and Balenciaga were still doing well into 1954... Or the pin up that started in the war and was still being photographed into the mid 50's.

The reason they look costuming is BECAUSE it’s modernized. No one wore platform patent leather heels and a polyester red PO lka dot halter dress in the 50s. The typical 50s style is actually very classy, not as loud and garish as the modern pin up style. Plus, if people are dressing this way, it’s because they don’t want to look modern. Otherwise; they would just dress modern. You just sound kind of hateful and judgey. Everyone has a different style, just because it isn’t your basic white woman IG girl taste doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with it. Not everyone wants to look boring. Let people live.

I am someone who has a really mixed wardrobe, i am obsessed with 50's, 60's, 70's, and todays normal kind of elegant but not produced fashion, i like to describe it as "something dakota Johnson and Felicity Jones would wear on a normal day" haha. But the thing is that, yes obviously on my journey of dressing up vintage I've been inspired on tv shows and adds of the time, magazines, etc, but before everything, all i have have been inspired on my grandma, and yes, you might say "omg you dress like your grandma?" and the answer is YES, why? The style that my grandma uses today was fashionable once, she was born on 1931, she was a young woman back on the 50's here on Mexico, she made her dresses back then, so I'm on the journey learning how to do them myself, she made her pants and shirts, she has showed me what colors people would use and what colors she choosed, what was on fashion and what was actually used on reality and daily life, she was a beautiful 30 year old woman living on USA on the 60's, she has also taught me how the 60's style in reality was, how to make the early 60's hairstyles and how to make some of the clothes used back then, she has even taught me the diet they use to have, the same as the 70's and here i get a lot of advices also from my aunt, who were really young at the time but still rembember the "chaviza" style, so I've learned how to incorporate the fashion on a really normal way, I've been thinking on making a serie of videos or a podcast talking with my grandma about everything she has taught me on fashion and also about her life, I'm still not sure if someone would see it but i think for a lot of woman how wants to dress up vintage and has no idea on how to start it would be really useful idk

I have to agree with some of the other commenters in that I don't feel this is your strongest video. I love the way you teach Kibbe's theory. It has actually helped me a lot in figuring out what vintage styles suit me and which don't. From the examples you show in the video, it seems that you aren't all that familiar with the vintage fashion community. I understand that not everyone can know about everything, but I would have loved if you had done a little more in depth research. The examples you show are more rockabilly and most stereotypical and what look like cheaply made dresses. It's not representative of authentic 1950s fashion. I would agree that people who wear those particular styles tend to look like they are wearing costumes, precisely because the clothing isn't authentic and a caricature of 1950s clothing. However, there are ways to dress in this style that don't need to look costumy and cheap. I'd encourage you to look at people like Shirinatra, Jessica Kellgren-Fozard and Idda van Munster to see great examples of people wearing vintage styles every day. They don't resort to the stereotypical polka dots, bright red colors or cherries and actually look quite elegant and put together. I'd also encourage you to look at brands and shops like Miss Candyfloss, Miss Patina, Unique Vintage and Top Vintage. They all carry well-made and high quality vintage reproduction styles. Finally, I wish instead of opting for rockabilly, you would have shown us pictures of actual people who lived in the 1950s and the outfits they wore. 1950s style doesn't have to only be for the yin-dominant girl/woman. In fact, one of the greatest style icons from that time period was Audrey Hepburn, a flamboyant gamine, who skews more towards yang than yin. Her pant and turtleneck combinations or use of gingham are timeless styles that wouldn't look out of place today. Emily in Paris (a show that admittedly features many questionable style choices) features an outfit that is entirely based on a gown Audrey Hepburn wore and it has been hailed as one of the best outfits on that show. I myself am a flamboyant gamine who loves vintage reproduction clothing. I've used a lot of the information in your videos to make the style work for myself, opting for stiffer fabrics, an interrupted silhouette and geometric patterns. I feel that it's not so much about whether you can incorporate 1950s clothing into your wardrobe, but how. That's going to differ completely depending on your kibbe type. I tried to dress like a romantic for years and only discovered how to make vintage clothing (including original dresses) work after finding my Kibbe type and the recommendations. I wish you would have gone into that instead of using words like "clownish" (I know English isn't your first language and I think you were quoting the person who asked the question anyway). Would you consider doing more research on the vintage clothing community (there are many of us out there and we really love that classic, elegant style of times past) and then maybe making recommendations on how to adapt this style based on your Kibbe body type? I feel that many of us would be better served with that kind of advice than what ended up being an inadvertently dismissive video about what we love. I would be happy to assist with any research!

I really like this comment. Personally, I push back against the notion of there being a right way or wrong way to dress vintage period. To me at the end of the day it's what the person likes the best and feels comfortable in.

But u can’t fully compare a daily, historical 50s look to rockabilly 50s. Theyre two different aesthetics. Example: rockabilly and the poodle skirts were a small sub culture. rather how alt community is today. They’re different with some similarities but u can’t compare a house wise fit to judge a rockabilly.

I am a yang dominant but I absolutely adore the yin look. I love ultra feminine stuff and deep down I always felt like a girly girl. I just don't want to look fake when doing more yin styles. I believe it is not possible. 😔
@shirin9452
@shirin9452 3 жыл бұрын
Well, yang dominant how? I kind of assume you’re referring to the Kibbe types? Every type, whether yang or yin dominant, has some femininity, it’s just a question of finding what flatters the type. So for instance, if you’re a dramatic you could do a beautiful plunging neckline or a deep slit with a geometric dangling earring or a shimmering choker. If you’re a natural you would look amazing in a Grecian goddess column of one colour, and maybe a thick, ornate golden cuff on your wrist. And even if you love frills or cute a-line skirts, there should be a way to do it in a darker colour or stiffer fabric that fits the lines of a yang-dominant type. You shouldn’t have to avoid the styles you love! I think there is a way to incorporate feminine pieces and lines and make it look “right” ^^

Thank you for saying this out loud! 👍🏻 Many women today can look nicely put together. Some (way too many!) do this plastic doll Kardashian look (I refuse to call it "style"). What most women lack nowadays is class. No matter how rich they are. But... polyester fabrics match polyester women. Pretty and classy are not the adjectives that come to my mind.
