I love playing with makeup and fashion, but at the same time, I’m quite a minimalistic person. I don't like the idea of being fixated on the body too much. I have an alternative and unconventional viewpoint on beauty, the body types and face shapes. I love helping other women find their "it" and finally discover their beauty and boost their confidence.

I feel that. I’m in college for dressmaking and luckily learn how to make perfectly fitting garments. But oh boy it’s so hard to a.) find patterns which aren’t just a box shape and b.) clothes in shops which actually flatter a curvy figure without being like very basic Instagram baddie looking. It seems like fashion brands utilise these silhouettes which only look good on tall, skinny women because they are too lazy making the effort to create more complex patterns with darts and ACTUAL SHAPE

I'm petite and I find that many of the rules don't apply. I've read many times to avoid wide leg, long pants, but those make me look taller. I think body shape and proportions is more of a factor than actual height. Also, as a designer, most clothes are made to fit models 5'7" or taller, so the other key is making sure whatever you wear fits you. It's not that petite people can't wear certain silhouettes, it's making sure the silhouette is tailored to your body.
@notaclue822

Yes. I'm on the verge of being petite but my legs are proportionately short and I have to be careful with cropped pants. I like wide legged pants but not when they're make out of thick or stiff material. The drape of the fabric counts too.
@dahanler1599
@dahanler1599 3 жыл бұрын
@@notaclue822 Me too. And above that, I have a flat ass that shows if I wear high waist trousers with cropped tops. My biggest struggle is to wear a trenchcoat with flat shoes, cause as you've said, the drape of the fabric is so off. We need much more delicate draping fabrics that almost shows our skin, like a thin silk dress. I usually have no difficulties in summer (can wear shorts and minis), but as soon as fall hits, the struggle starts. Everything that's made to keep you warm is bulky! I try to stick with thin merino underwear and wear lighter jackets, but hey it's too cold..
@notaclue822
@notaclue822 3 жыл бұрын
@@dahanler1599 yeah I get that about the high waisted pants as I'm mature and have lost some curves. I like them because they elongate your legs though. Some are better than others. It's a good thing I enjoy trying things on in stores looking for clothes.
@lilaeia

I agree. Maybe it’s more about visual proportions and vertical line than actual height? As a petite Romantic with long legs and a short torso, neither cropped tops nor cropped bottoms work for me. The former emphasise how short my torso is and the latter emphasise how long my legs are. With a long vertical line, despite being petite, I find long visual lines work best - long dresses most of all. Same colour top to bottom, ideally hitting the floor. It is possible to be petite with a long vertical line. Shortening the vertical line in that case seems to lose the balance of proportion. This is where the Kibbe system does not work for all Romantics imho... the systems that include Ethereal (or Angelic) cater for those who could be petite (or not), but they have a long rather than short vertical line and do best with long vertical line garments, with S shapes (elongated curves) rather than short vertical lines and colour blocking (which does not work for me AT ALL) and very rounded shapes and curves. I love the Kibbe system but the exclusion of this type leaves some of us stranded, with advice that doesn’t work. 💝

If you're petite but have flesh (not talking about overweight), you might look short with pants that cut you in ankle. This happens with me and i have noticed in pictures i look short. I'm round in shape. Best tip is to wear heels in any length.
@katariina7697
@katariina7697 3 жыл бұрын
I'm with you, Katia. I wrote a comment about this under this video. Cropped clothes are definitely not for all short women, that's why the more complex and detailed advice of the Kibbe system is so much better than these types of waayyy too simplistic approaches. Not all short women have delicate bones, and if you put cropped, stiff clothes on wide, blunt, short bones, the result is definitely unflattering.

It depends on the very specific cut and outfit combination on the individual body (thin-lean, soft-rounded, muscular). It is very important that the leg isn't too wide and highwaist. Cropped and midwaist shortens even tall women.
@clancyvanaalst

I find that high waist pants that are tight or tapered at the ankle look really good cropped or cuffed above the ankle. That little bit of ankle showing is like a trick to the eye making your legs seem longer than they are. The crop length of top Aly is talking about also fits perfectly with high waisted pants.

My best tip as a petite (5’3”) is to make sure my wrists show - rolling up sleeves or pushing them up. The half-tuck is one of my best friends with any top. If you have slim wrists/ankles - showing them will illustrate your smaller bones and keep you from looking as wide. Make sure your clothes (tops or bottoms) have some fit to them. Vertical neckline may be helpful.

@CaylasCapsule 3 жыл бұрын
@@MegaTinni I think it really depends on the fit of the pieces, especially the top. Like for me, I have a tiny waist but wide hips. So I want loose tops to fall to either above or below my hips. If the bottom of the top is in line with my hips, it'll draw attention to them and I'll look wider than I am. I've also found that showing a tiny bit of skin, even if it's just wrists, ankles, or decolletage, can help allude to my figure when it's obscured by oversized clothes.
@MegaTinni
@MegaTinni 3 жыл бұрын
@@CaylasCapsule yes, I agree on showing some skin on a small part of the body. I can only do either top, or bottom less fitted, but never both. That really doesn't suit me I must admit, even though it feels good to be in slouchy clothes on some days :)
@CaylasCapsule
@CaylasCapsule 3 жыл бұрын
@@MegaTinni My personal favorite is to wear a loose midi dress with a giant v-neck sweater and platform sneakers. It's super comfy, and it actually makes me look taller. I think the v-neck draws attention to the vertical line, the looseness makes it difficult to tell where my legs begin, and the bit of ankle shows that under it all, I'm definitely tiny. Plus because it incorporates a dress, it looks fancy even though it's sooo comfy! :)

Years before finding out about Kibbe, this is something I observed for myself. Maxi anything (top, bottom, dress, even hair) make me look shorter than I am (5'3 with an already short vertical line). The funny thing is that most fashion tips for petite women are all the opposite, create a long, continous vertical line, but it doesn't work because it contrasts against our real vertical line. Most image advisor know nothing.

I used to think cropped pants made my legs look shorter, but it turns out I needed a higher rise. Pants that button at the belly-button are best for me. Pants and skirts that button at the natural waist are good when paired with a cropped top (that ends above or just-at where the pants start) or a fitted top. I tend not to like high-waisted styles with button-ups tucked in because, no matter how fitted they are, they look a bit wide or bulky. I think it depends on the fabric. It's neat how many different factors there are.

I'm a huge fan of your channel, but I have to say, here you're a bit off - and you are not alone. :) It's so common that stylists tell short women to wear cropped shirts. However, there are short women (yes, like me) who have long legs and a short torso. In that case it often looks better to wear shirts that are a little longer, to balance it out. I, for example, look very matronly in cropped shirts and completely different (and better) in longer ones. This is why I love the Kibbe system, it's so much more complicated but also subtler than these kinds of advice, which are waaayyy too limited to apply to all petite people.

One of my best friends is a petite SN, she is even shorter than me (I am a TR). Buuuut her vertical line isn't as short as her actual height and she actually looks amazing with loose maxi dresses with slight waist emphasis. Funny thing is that I am taller but look hideous in maxi dresses. 🤣

Aly this was great. I recently had a style analysis done and I’m a dramatic/flamboyant gamine. So I’ve been on a journey looking for what’s best for my petite very slim straight frame. Anyway just today I was in TKMaxx trying on a jacket and I literally tucked it under a little to the point that I liked it as a cropped jacket and took a mental note, and it sat LITERALLY on the bone that you mentioned. So thank you for the confirmation. That length looked great on me, and will be my point of reference for future purchases or sewing makes. Thank you. 🤗

Imma gamine and recently, in the cold weather, I've been going for a layered block look. I have a long sleeve, a sweater or turtle neck, underneath a t-shirt. And I'll tuck that into something high-waisted. For pants I'll roll them up a bit or keep them tailored. Then have a high sneaker or slightly chunky boot. For skirts I'll add fishnets and high socks in place of the pants. This is my style and it won't work for everyone and you may not like it. But if you do feel free to give it a try! :D also, a good note is earrings and a necklace can go a long way for your look. If you don't have any patterns than you may try a long necklace and short earrings. This can give the sectioning akin to color blocking your looking for as well!

I Love your videos and even watch them when I'm not having the issues you discuss, like being petite. But I think you teach me how to use my eyes in tha respect. I've been taking some interest ins monochromatic looks lately which means that I'm looking around when I'm in public how it actually looks on women. Many fashion youtubers recommend monochromatic outfits to elongate the silhouette. But in my opinon this advice is not for really petite women. I think it actually makes them appear shorter. So I absolutely agree with you about the colour blocking. Thank you for giving information and advice that is not based on your own figure and personal fashion sense as so many do.

I love being petite! And my body is atypical (wider in the middle). So waist emphasis is a no-no. I usually wear fullness on either the top or the bottom, not both. Kathy B. What about long tops that end below the butt? Almost like a mini dress.
@angelacuria3357
@angelacuria3357 3 жыл бұрын
This was really on point for me! I'm a flamboyant gamine and there are a few things I have been avoiding for a while because they mess with my proportions. I can't wear anything midi, unless there are other significant elements to balance it out. So any midi skirts, for example, make me look shorter. I have one dress that is midi length, but I always have to wear it with heels. It also has gathers at the wrists, ties around and the rib cage (chest) and has small to medium-sized flowers, which add some yin to it. I've also noticed that I simply cannot go for tops that are too long because they end up making me look frumpy, boxy and overweight. I weigh 125 at 5'5 and I have long, small bones, so I'm not even close to being big, but long tops make me look out of proportion. I try to make a point to buy outfits with color blocking and broken silhouettes.

I am already doing this. I sew many of my clothes and started making cropped blouses that end at my hip bones. They look so much better. I also need a wardrobe of dressy clothes and have made several dresses that are one color, but have the top cut separate and well fitted, but not tight, and the skirt part with some pleating or gathers at the waist. The top emphasizes my small boned frame and the skirt looks softer and flowy. Have received many compliments. Thanks for your videos, you are right on with your advice.

I am petite and really quite slim. The advice to "break" up the outfit the textures, colours, etc is very true. Eg rolling up jeans when wearing ankle boots - the ankle area is automatically divided into 4 colours - the Base colour of the jeans, the lighter underside of the jeans, the skin and then the boot. Do it side by side one side left as normal and see for yourself. The side with the jeans rolled up an inch looks so much daintier, elegant and a little tailored.

I recommend more of a long pair of trousers : flared or tailored-style that arrives 5cm lower than your actual leg size, to wear with a comfy almost menswear paif of heels, something like chunky chelsea boots, chunky loafers, mocassins...etc. it will create the illusion that the trousers are actually jut getting to your feet.

I'm just under 5'2" and have a broad frame (not exactly big-boned, but my shoulders, back, rib cage, hips are wide -- I'm 36"-28"-36"). To create the illusion of vertical length and narrowness, I do avoid wearing my tops below the hip bones, as Aly suggested. Even an extra inch or two below the hips makes a visual difference. Wearing empire-waisted dresses is flattering and practical for a number of reasons. For us endomorphs, we can hide our tummies. I wouldn't be able to wear a knee-length skirt or dress, if it nipped in at the natural waist, but if it's empired, then I look leaner and longer--it visually lengthens the torso AND legs. I'm 45 and have suffered enough for fashion, so I aim for comfort, w/o looking like I let myself go. All of the shoes I wear now are flat-soled, but I still feel cute (even if it's only in my head, it doesn't matter, as long as *I* feel good about myself, though my sister did tell me that I look like a cosplayer in my everyday clothes, so I must look relatively interesting). Slip-on sneakers, combat boots, and knee-hi boots comprise most of my footwear options these days. I'm an INTJ, and we're famous for designating a "uniform" of our choosing. Mine is a wifebeater front-tucked, leggings w/ a mini over it (mini only goes down 2" below crotch), and combat boots. My mom told me that my legs looked long, and people generally think I'm taller than my height. If you wear a mini, it shouldn't drop below upper mid-thigh, and shouldn't flare out too wide.

I do not mind personally even if it gathers a bit around my shoes. I do roll them up but still if its a weighty fabric it can look really messy.
