RIP April Stevens - she just passed away at nearly 94 years of age. April, born in 1929, turned 37 in 1966. No one could have guessed it - she seemed here as a very young (early twenties) performer. Such was the music market, then as now - young and younger was demanded, and nothing else! Bless her pretty and talented heart. Condolences to brother Nino.

I remember April had a big hit in 1951 (really!) called "I'm In Love Again" (a Cole Porter song) but, being 9, I was too young to appreciate it. But 11 years later along her and her brother Nino's hits, and I loved 'em! And now 60 years later, I find these live performances.. Fabulous! No lip-synching, no corny sets, just their stripped down great singing. Really wish we could have heard more from them!

The songs were part of an hour long weekly prime time show in Australia, Brian Henderson's Bandstand. This was from 9/3/66. You can find the entire show on You Tube. Most acts were Australian. There would be some American or British acts also. The show starts with Deep Purple. Later in the show you have the middle songs (different outfits), with an interview in between. At the end of the show is All Strung Out, followed by the B side, which is under the closing credits and unfortunately cut short.

I adore the part at 0:57-1:00 . I think they are both singing the same line, but in different ways. April seems to be punching the words up high and bright (and almost faster?) while Nino is more flat and low. The difference makes for an interesting and even more beautiful performance. You can tell these two are talented musicians who play around with their songs instead of going for the easy and plain route.
