Today we're working on this beautiful Navitimer ref 806 AOPA from 1959 with the legendary Venus 178 movement inside. We will discuss the history of Breitling and the Navitimer as well as some of the trickier parts of this movement. And we'll talk about the many ways to skin a c... sorry, to fool the taxman!

That was a beautifully relaxing, and most enjoyable restoration of that Breitling Navitimer. I especially enjoyed it as I'd finished late after seeing a patient recovered and I wanted to rest my mind after such a horrendous day. The Navitimer is the watch that first really grabbed my attention in the early eighties when I saw one in a shop window. An object of desire for me. It started and drove my interest in watches ever since. Unfortunately I have never owned one, but still it may happen. It was great to see one "bare" as it were. Thank-you for a great video (production quality improving all the time), but I probably won't be considering your tax insights with the same amount of attention.

Very interesting. I have (gift from friend) a chronograph that a Vietnam-era helicopter pilot had and wore for many years. Have been told it is a Breitling, but branded for an American distributor. Looks very much like this one. Had a local watchmaker look at it, and he said he didn't feel he should take on doing a service, which is what he thinks is all it needs. I may have him look at this and maybe he'll rethink being willing to try it on. Really enjoy your videos on watches.

@VintageWatchServices

Hei Tore, at some point I hope to have a seagull, but at the moment I don't. They bought the machinery from Switzerland to make the Venus 175, so the movement is basically the same.

Absolutely great video Stian. A very beautiful watch movement. I have an old Heuer with a Valjoux 724 inside. It looks remarkably similar to this Venus 78. Are they linked to one another?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Martin! The Valjoux 724 is certainly a beautiful movement also, based on the 72 (which tracks all the way back to the 22). It is indeed quite similar in layout to the Venus 178, but it's not really related. They have some different design decisions in terms of the column wheel, the hammer mechanism etc, but to the eye they look very similar. I'd think this is more due to both being traditional layout column wheel chronos, but given that Venus started up later than Valjoux, it would sound reasonable that they looked to the more established company Valjoux when making their designs.

Wow! What a great video! Beautifully presented and very interesting. I have no intention of taking apart my 2008 Navitimer World, but was intrigued to see what is inside. And here I thought it ran by magic 😀. How many years does it take to learn to do this? More parts in theses watches than in the space shuttle!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much and I like to think it's black magic 😎 How long you need to learn this is certainly a product of how much effort you put into it and how well built your brain and hands are for this type of work, plus the level of support you have in learning it! There's of course the much discussed 10,000 hour rule that you can break down on your own effort, but if you do this on a hobby basis all by yourself while reading some books and watching a lot of youtube videos I'd say you would want to successfully service at least 50 simpler watches before embarking on a 3 register chronograph. That might take 5 years or more on a hobby basis. Then again, if money is not an issue you can buy a few old running Venus 175/178 watches and just jump right into it 😁
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
And btw, your Navitimer World looks more like this inside: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLempbqanZnLdac.html than this old Navitimer. It has a Valjoux 7754 inside it, which is less complicated to service should you feel so inclined 😁
@TheAirplaneDriver
@TheAirplaneDriver 2 жыл бұрын
@@VintageWatchServices You certainly have the touch for this work. I can see it would take many years to get to this level of proficiency. Not just taking these precision instruments apart and putting them back together (staggeringly complex as that is), but also the skills necessary to evaluate the serviceability of each part and what to even look for if a watch is not functioning properly. With all that, you also need the artists touch! Black magic it is for sure. Thanks for your response and the insight. I love the AOPA version of the Breitling. I’ve been an AOPA member for nearly 30 years. You think they would give me one for all that loyalty 😀

I've always loved the aviation chronographs. Along with Fliegers and true divers they are my favourite style of watch. I have a question: do you find there are any issues with disassembling a watch whilst it is still running? Love your work, keep it up! And cheers to you in Switzerland from myself down here on the beautiful (mostly sunny) south coast of NSW Australia👍 PS did you mean 15 degrees F or C..
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Morgan, thanks for watching and greetings from increasingly cold Switzerland! At some point the watch will stop when you disassemble it, but you want this to be controlled and not violent, as the force from a too rapid release of the mainspring power could cause damage to the wheel train or the pallet fork. What is F? 😉 The civilized world used Celsius 😁

@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Dave, thanks for watching and for your question! Scratches isn't the right word, I should have said marks instead. I'm not sure exactly what the reason is, but you sometimes see this in really old crystals, so I assume it is some sort of chemical reaction. This one had especially one really deep mark that sort of looked like a small hair had melted into the plastic.

Great video. Thank you. My father-in-law left me an AOPA Navitimer which I loved. However even after being serviced by a specialist, the case was very susceptible to humidity and was often showing moisture under the crystal. For example, if it was in the room adjacent to my shower. I found it necessary to remove the watch before washing my hands. Was this a consequence of the design of the watch or a failure on the part of the servicer?
@VintageWatchServices

Hello Harry, that sounds a bit worse than it should be, but the design of the watch with the slider rule indeed jeopardized water resistance. They changed the design later on for that very reason.

@@VintageWatchServices So good to hear that from a professional...left like I was on an island with my opinion on venture capitalists and how this brand will get squeezed. I read last week that CVC is trying to sell a percentage of Breitling to Rothschild Bank.....not sure what that means but it can't be good. The really soft resale of used Colts and other models made me do some research and found that the brand was purchased by CVC in 2017. It all started making sense now. How many watches do you have to sell to pay for Brad Pitt and other celebrities endorsement....or advertising on boats in Bremen, Germany or Korea (seeing the boats made me feel like the luxury/exclusive feel of the brand was over - it is a numbers game now). With an older chronograph movement, like the Venus 175, is it best to have the chronograph functions running at all times when the watch is wound? Or... even with a new Seamaster chronograph Calibre 9300, do you engage the chronograph and keep it running or leave it stopped?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Clay, there's no need to leave the chronograph running, no. That would just lead to unnecessary wear. It's a good idea to use it every now and then, but also not really necessary. The only good reason I can think of to keep the chronograph running would be when you have a chronograph watch without a seconds hands, which are not very common anyway.

Hi Boyd, a hobby ultrasonic should be safe for pretty much the whole movement, but place the parts in different beakers or run a few parts each time, especially the balance. Also make sure you use good fluids, both for cleaning and rinsing. The only items I've seen damaged in my ultrasonic are very worn chrono pushers and very large jewels, but likely there were cracks in the jewels before the ultrasonic and the machine only made them worse.

Hello Karol, thanks for watching and for your question! Landeron made some very fine movements but they're mostly known for the 48 family. These are as you probably know cam switched and were produced in the millions, making them very easy to find for not a lot of money. They're not very refined however, and column wheel chronos are certainly a level higher in complexity and workmanship. Venus also made van switched movements, like the 188 that became Valjoux 7733, but they're better known for their column wheel ones. Giving an actual answer to your question is kind of impossible given these characteristics but I'd personally go for Venus. But then you of course also have other makers, like Valjoux, Lemania, Angelus etc...

How could the inside of the crystal be scratched ?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Marek, thanks for watching and for your question! Scratches isn't really the best words, the crystal had a lot of deep marks. It seemed like some old dirt had more or less fused into the crystal and it took a lot of effort to get out. So much in fact that the crystal has lost its proper curvature there. I'm not entirely sure how this happens, but you do see it quite often in old plexiglass crystals. It likely is a chemical reaction of sorts that happens over a long time.
