I bought Scary Monsters when it first came out. I was making the transition from the likes of Aerosmith, AC/DC, Black Sabbath etc. into this new world of music (Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs, The Jam, Gary Numan's Replicas album, etc.). I had Ziggy Stardust in my record collection but hadn't listened to it in years and it was my only other Bowie album. I was blown away by Scary Monsters, I absolutely loved it. I remember setting the tone arm down, sitting down, and It's No Game comes on with these great guitar chords and this Japanese woman talking and then Bowie comes in. I just smiled and thought, this is f*#king awesome! 🙂

Great video as always.When you said Question 10: Most surprising purchase, the first thing that came to my mind is here comes a $150 Analogue Productions LP. When I saw you pull out something thin, I knew I was mistaken. So my first question would be: What would you say has the least chance of happening? You ever buying a $150 Analogue Productions Lp, or John Cougar Mellencamp winning an Oscar for Best Actor? The character Kevin Malone from the old TV show The Office has $10,000 to 1 odds on Mellencamp. His advice was "If anyone ever gives you 10,000 to 1 odds; take it."..."If he ever wins an Oscar, I am going to be one rich dude." He also said "The only thing I ever really wanted from life was to sit on the beach every day and eat hot dogs." It seems like in the Comments section everybody is pre-ordering Aja. Steely Dan's music structure changed on that album from songs with more of a continuous flow and some good hooks to a very free and loose structure, without concern with hooks. There are "some" songs with rhyming lyrics, but they weren't overly concerned with that anymore either. Would like to have it but not at that price. Give me $150 to go on a record shopping spree, and between ebay, thrift stores and record stores, I can come up with enough new music to last me all year long. Of course the wealthy can afford to do both on a regular basis; and they are lucky....Some of my other questions would be: 2. What is your favorite album of all time? 3. What kind of stere system do you play your records on? 4. Where did you get your great sense of humor and creativity from? Some of your videos like the Memphis record stores and the hot sauce one are absolute classics on here. When Jefferson Airplane named their greatest hits album Worst Of Jefferson Airplane. Was that the first time anyone did that? It was funny somewhat. Grace Slick has done lots of interviews. I remember once on the old Tomorrow Show with the late Tom Snyder, she realized that her car was being followed by the police. She thought to herself, "What am I worried about? I got an Aston Martin. I'm driving a James Bond car," and then floored it. After a lengthy chase she finally stopped and decided to pull over. The officer offered to tear up her ticket if she would let him look under the hood and see the engine. She claims that White Rabbit was not a pro drug song. Even though she was known as the Acid Queen. She tried to get in the White House one time and put some in Nixon's coffee. Sounds like she was only here for fun.

I thought John Mellencamp was the best thing about the movie "Lone Star State of Mind" as the old man ranting about the government. I can see him winning an Oscar if he got the right role similar to Levon Helm. Oscars love doing that kind of thing. The Beatles White Album. Music Hall turntable, JBL studio series speakers, Yamaha amp. My mother and growing up watching comedies. Spanky & Our Gang did something similar calling their album "Greatest Hit(s)". Thanks!!

Another entertaining video!!!! Obviously I'm glad that you enjoyed First Aid Kit. That's their 5th full studio album plus they had an ep when they were like 14 & 16. I agree with you that they're not master lyricists, but actually a lot of their songs on earlier albums were about other things than love. They have lots of really beautiful songs. Check out the song Emmylou. I think you may like that one. I love Loretta Lynn too and I grew up with Elvis' Aloha from Hawaii drilled into my brain. I always finish your videos completely entertained.

Tough to argue that John Price debut. Utterly fantastic. Throughout the 90s, WXRT in Chicago was giving him a lot of love. His single "Picture Show" (with Tom Petty) was in pretty heavy rotation there. And Chrissie Hynde's "I shot my mouth off" line was on "Tattooed Love Boys".

Hey great video. Most hilarious moment was your choice of Supernaut for your Australian act. They were a one hit wonder band here in Oz in the mid-late 70's with "I Like It Both Ways" but amounted to nothing otherwise. Were featured on "Countdown" which was an Australian pop/rock show shown on a Sunday night at 6pm on the ABC (government owned station). They did try reinventing their look & style to follow the punk movement and even called themselves the Nauts. I saw them at a Northern Sydney pub, (I think supporting the Divinyls or it was just them?). I think there were 20 people there. The song was just your typical 2-3 chord rock. Loved your choice of Elvis for your 'space album cover'. Love the channel too. You have a dry wit which I like. Cheers mate.👍

Even when I was going to lots of concerts the stadium shows were far and few between. Small gigs are the way to go. I actually showed socks in my vinyl tag. The English Kaleidoscope is a grail. Here goes: What major band / artist do you feel fell the furthest regarding their quality of work in comparison to their high water mark? And how long did it take? For me, it's the band Chicago. From Chicago Transit Authority, etc. to late-'70's-early- ''80's stuff in a little over a decade. Thank you.
@RobertFithen
@RobertFithen Жыл бұрын
Wow! I literally just heard "Chicago 17" in it's entirety for the first time 2 hours ago. So many answers... There are the ones that I feel took an immediate nosedive after an extremely high point like Pink Floyd going from DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, The Wall right to The Final Cut, etc. and Bob Dylan going from an incredible run with Bringing It All..., Hwy 61, and Blonde On Blonde diving to his troubadour era with John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline, etc. (although I'm sure many would disagree on that one). I think The Rolling Stones peaked just before and continuing with the Mick Taylor years and, obviously, later 90's albums can't compare. Elvis Presley fell out going from rock & roll 50's and even early 60's hits to those ridiculous soundtrack filler songs. But, I think the biggest drop for me, was Prince and the "Purple Rain" era diving in quality to the symbol album era.
@floydstoner2962

@@RobertFithen Thanks for the reply. I do agree with some of yours, although I listen the "The Final Cut" probably more than any other Pink Floyd album. I did some experimenting recently. I have been comparing vintage 50's & 60's vinyl to vinyl of the last 10 years or so. It seems that the old discs fly much better than the newer ones. I gave my 9 grandchildren a bunch of my albums to see which the kids thought made the best frisbies. The MoFi from the '80s are pretty good. Beatles era not bad. Best were the oldest. An elvis album from 1958 could really fly! RCA LSC's are good but Dynagroove's are bad.

I am ashamed to admit that Scary Monsters was one of my big disappointments. I loved Bowie, saved that buy for last in my collection. It got to be the best, 80 my favorite year in pop (with 79), Ashes to Ashes on it, Townsend playing on one track, album artwork, right after Berlin trilogy and all. It just got to be great. And it was such a letdown for me. Nothing else sounds like Ashes, funny studio live sound, inconsistent mix, partially awkward singing (seemingly by design to add some new wave). Kingdom Come (by Verlaine), Scary Monsters and Fashion are great but the rest... Fripp's lead guitar sounds like a screeching door. Why let Fripp play so much when you have Alomar/Hammer/Townsend? Drums like recorded in a warehouse. Maybe it was time to part ways with Visconti. And yes, you can dispute the actual influence of Brian Eno on many album "produced" by him. But he was certainty much missed here. The B-sides from the album singles? Even worse as far as I'm concerned...
